While Robin’s Lazarus Tournament is still underway, the most recent issue has revealed Damian Wayne’s discovery of a secret family member long thought to be dead. Estranged from his father Batman, Robin has been working on a case involving the League of Assassins, Shadows, and the new League of Lazarus. Entering a tournament on Lazarus Island where the fights are to the death multiple times over (thanks to supernatural resurrections), Damian is determined to learn the truth about what the League of Lazarus truly wants. However, this new issue also features the truth about the League’s leader known as Mother Soul.
In previous issues of Robin from writer Joshua Williamson with artists Gleb Melnikov and Max Dunbar, Damian Wayne has been winning the Lazarus Tournament, staying the game long enough to get his hands on the League’s sacred Book of Lazarus. While he’s died once already thanks to the League of Shadows’ champion Connor Hawke (the secret son of the Green Arrow), Damian isn’t planning on dying again as he’s nearing the end of the mystery, having learned the truth about the League of Lazarus and its island in this new issue.
While Robin didn’t have the book for long in Robin #7 before Mother Soul recovered it, Damian reveals that he read enough to learn that the powerful Lazarus Pits (long used by the League of Assassins’ Ra’s al Ghul to remain immortal) leaked into the foundation of the island. The supernatural waters infected the island with dark power where it now requires deaths to grow something terrible within the island itself. While this is the true reason for the Lazarus Tournament, that’s not all the Son of Batman learned from the book. He also reveals the true identity of Mother Soul as Ra’s al Ghul’s mother (maker her Damian’s great grandmother).
While Ra’s is The Demon’s Head and Damian has been known as the Heir to the Demon, it looks as though Rúh al Ghul is known as the Soul of the Demon. Damian had believed her to have been dead for years, though Rúh makes a good point that death has never really been a problem for their family. While Damian vows to stop his great grandmother and whatever she’s created on Lazarus Island, he still has one final fight left in the tournament with Connor Hawke himself. Regardless, it’s interesting to learn that Damian has yet another immortal family member who runs an evil League in the shadows of the DC Universe. It also makes one wonder if Ra’s al Ghul’s father is still alive as well.
In any case, the Son of Batman’s final fight with the Son of Green Arrow is bound to be pretty intense, though perhaps Robin will be able to convince Connor to help him stop Mother Soul rather than the two of them trying to kill one another. Fans will just have to wait and see when Robin has his final battle of the Lazarus Tournament in the issues to come.
