Scrap Mechanic Beginner’s Survival Mode Guide

Scrap Mechanic is a game developed by Axolot Games where players can build, farm, and scavenge on a faraway planet. The player plays the game as a robot mechanic who was sent off-world in order to repair the farming robots who have gone haywire on the planet. These robots will attack anyone they see and will detect anyone who tries to engage in “unauthorized farming”. In order to survive the player will have to use scavenged materials, their wits, and their creativity in order to make their way through the world.

With its survival mode offering features like thirst, health, and hunger; players may need a bit of assistance to jump-start their adventure. It also doesn’t help that the game itself doesn’t give players that many instructions on how to progress through the game. So here is a guide detailing what the player should focus on when they first crash on the agricultural planet.

Explore In and Around the Crash Site in Scrap Mechanic

When the game first starts and the ship crashes, the first thing a player should do is get their bearings. The crash ship itself should hold a few notable objects like a bed to respawn on, a locker to store items, etc. Think of this crash site as a starting base where players can quickly hold, store, and create their items. But players should quickly notice that their crash ship is missing a master battery and that this battery is necessary to power a basic craftbot that will prove instrumental in enhancing the player’s crafting capacity.

So now it is time for the player to do some exploring. The crash site and the area around it have several distinct features, so getting lost shouldn’t be too much of an issue. But one of the first things a player wants to do is go around and loot damaged crates in the area. These chests will give the player several materials, but most important is the food they can give.

With the player being ill-advised to begin farming, that means all of the player’s survival needs need to be collected from either lootable containers or harvested in the wild. Items like redbeets, woc milk, and sunshakes can all be used to increase the player’s hunger and thirst levels.

Just note that every vegetable and drink the player collects won’t be edible. Corn and potatoes, for instance, can’t be eaten in the game’s current version. But they do have other purposes. Corn can be fed to wocs (the alien cow things) to produce woc milk, and the potatoes can be used as ammunition in spud guns.

Farm with Caution and Gather Raw Building Material in Scrap Mechanic

Around the crash site, the player should quickly discover the initial farming area. It should have a few buckets, a small farming plot, and several farming supplies like fertilizer and seeds. The player may be tempted to begin farming in order to create a sustainable food source for themselves. But it is advised for beginner players to avoid farming entirely until they gain more material. Planting a single crop or two may go unnoticed, but extensive farming activity will undoubtedly attract the attention of the malfunctioning robots.

This detection will result in a red timer being placed above the crops. It is when the timer reaches zero that the farm will be raided by a variety of robots who will try to destroy the farm and kill the player if they are nearby. That means if the player wants to have a viable farm, they need to defend the crop area.

That means fortifying the farm with whatever the player has at their disposal. Usually in the form of walls. They won’t hold off the robots indefinitely, but it may buy the player some time since the robots have to break through the walls before they reach the vulnerable crops. But since this is the beginning of the game, odds are all the players will have access to is wood. That means the player should take a page out of their Minecraft knowledge and begin hitting trees.

Hit them until they break into logs, and then hit them again until they break into wood posts. These posts can’t be stored in the player’s inventory, but they can be carried and placed at different locations. But to gain wood as an actual building material, the player has to refine those wooden posts into scrap wood by holding down the E button. These scrap wood blocks will become the cornerstone for any beginner’s base or fortifications. They can be used as a vehicle’s base, to build walls or even just as a means of decorating a farm plot.

Regardless of what the player intends to use it for, it is advised that the player has at least some scrap wood on them at all times. With scrap wood being as versatile as it is, having a decent amount of wood blocks on hand will likely prove useful.

Explore Ruins and Beat Robots in Scrap Mechanic

But abandoned farms and the wilds are not the only place where the player can find materials. Several man-made ruins are also in the area, and each holds their own damaged crates and ruin chests that the player can loot for more material. But as with ruins in several other games, these structures also hold enemies. Usually totebots and haybots.

Totebots are the easier of the two since they have low health and only deal a little damage each hit. Haybots are more difficult, but with their delayed attacks players can easily defeat them if they are at full health. Just be sure to avoid attacking haybots if they are not alone. With the player only having their sledgehammer as a weapon, the player character cannot afford to go up against multiple robots at once.

But when defeated, these robots drop useful items the player can use later. Most notable are the circuit boards and robot parts. The robot parts can be refined and turned into scrap metal, which is a common building material. Circuit boards meanwhile are used in several interactive parts that can be made with a craftbot. So it is good to collect those components as often as possible.

Speaking of the craftbot, it should also be noted that one of these nearby ruins will have a master battery since it always spawns near the area where it needs to provide power. It is therefore recommended that the player explores at least 2-3 nearby ruins so that they may find the master battery and collect all the materials they may need for crafting materials for their first vehicle.

Basic Craftbot and Vehicle Building in Scrap Mechanic

So now that the player has the master battery, go back to the crash site and install it to activate the basic craftbot. If the fires are still a problem, go and put them out with a filled water bucket. They can be found near the farm that is close to the crash site.

But it is once the basic craftbot is activated the player can start creating their first vehicle. A basic vehicle guide should be provided to the player at the beginning of the game and it can be viewed by pressing the H key. It should be easy enough to build if the player already has enough materials. But here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Scrap wheels are the worst wheels in the game. They are wobbly and generally unstable. So if possible the player should replace them with regular wheels scavenged from different locations in the game.
  • Robots can damage and destroy vehicles. So it is advised to build protective barriers around the vehicle’s wheels, seat, and engine. It is also advised to keep an extra tire on hand just in case a robot ends up destroying a wheel anyway.
  • Vehicles can be used to carry several objects if they have the appropriate bed space. So it is advised the player adds at least a little space in the back area of their vehicle so they can place objects on it.

But how good or bad a vehicle is doesn’t matter too much. The main purpose of this contraption is to speed the player’s advancement to the nearest mechanic station. These stations are scattered across the game, and several of them need another master battery before they become available. This means the player will need to once again begin exploring the area and collect building components as they go so they can create a more advanced craftbot. It is when the player builds this advanced craftbot that the game really opens up and allows the player to craft and build in earnest. With the player now having mastered the game’s basics, they may even begin plans to build a proper base away from the crash site.
