A new short film has just dropped ahead of the theatrical release of Illumination’s Sing 2, and it features some of the original cast as well as some new faces. The sequel to the 2016 animated box office hit Sing is finally releasing this December. The project was originally scheduled to come out during the holiday season in 2020, and then in July 2021, but was delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Now, Sing 2 is almost here, releasing during one of the most competitive and busy movie seasons of the year, which sees major tent pole releases almost every weekend throughout November and December.
Sing 2 follows Matthew McConaughey’s Buster Moon and his crew debuting another show after the success of the events of the first movie. They have their sights set on the Crystal Tower Theater in the massive Redshore City. But without connections, Moon and his singers have to sneak into the Crystal Entertainment company offices, run by Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale). There, the gang pitches casting the lion rock star Clay Calloway (Bono) in their new show. Moon and the singers must embark on a quest to find the now-reclusive Clay and persuade him to return to the stage once more. The Sing 2 cast is a massive ensemble, including the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton, Reese Witherspoon, Tori Kelly, Nick Kroll, and Halsey.
Now, a new short film titled “Come Home” has released just a few weeks before Sing 2. Promoted on the Xfinity YouTube channel, the video sees a new family of dogs excited for their mom (voiced by Keke Palmer) to come home. She is stuck in the snow, and gets into some heartwarming adventures with Moon’s singers. The Sing 2-inspired short then keeps in the spirit of the movies and the holidays in an endearing way. “Come Home” is a fun way to hold Sing fans’ excitement until the release of Sing 2. Seeing the characters singing together again in a holiday themed short is an uplifting and fun way to tease the returning characters. Showing off talents is common in Sing, so it is great to see that continue in this short. Performing fun musical hits has always been the major staple of the franchise, which regularly sees the stars cover popular songs. This is also seen in the casting of both Sing movies, as Illumination decided to get some real-life musicians such as Tori Kelly and Halsey to voice characters. This is a clever move from the studio, allowing fans to hear songs they love while also introducing younger audiences to older music and veteran performers like Bono.
Illumination has recently been dominating movie news due to its upcoming Super Mario Bros. animated feature that it is working on with Nintendo. It was announced that Chris Pratt will be voicing Mario, and the movie will see other cast members Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, and Seth Rogen joining him. The studio also has Minions: The Rise of Gru in the pipeline for Despicable Me fans to enjoy after Sing 2. It’s very possible that these projects will also get their own spin-off teasers like the Sing 2-based short film, as Illumination has proven itself to be a clever marketing force. At the very least, “Come Home” offers viewers with the perfect change to get in the holiday spirit and enjoy another glimpse into the Sing universe.
