The creators of the upcoming Jurassic World animated series have revealed that they got some excellent advice from Steven Spielberg along the way. Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous arrives on Netflix as of September 18, offering a new take on the iconic franchise.

The series focuses on a group of six teenagers who are chosen to take part in a new adventure camp on the famed Isla Nublar. Located on the opposite side of the island from Jurassic World, everything falls apart when the dinosaurs of Jurassic World run riot, causing the teens to be stranded and cut off from the outside world. Faced with having to fend for themselves, the teens must band together and develop close bonds, if they are to survive this latest Jurassic nightmare. For the first time in the six film series, a storyline involving the doomed dinosaur park will focus directly on children, forcing them to make the decisions that will either benefit or hinder their survival. The first trailer for the new series arrived back in July, and since then, fans have been eager to see just what Netflix has done with this new angle.

However, if the first trailer wasn’t enough to convince some fans that Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous is no watered-down animated adaptation, perhaps news of Spielberg’s reaction will. As Slash Film has reported, during a recent interview about the upcoming series, showrunner Scott Kreamer stated that Spielberg had one major request for the show’s creators: “Don’t do the kiddy version.” It seems the most important aspect of carrying on the Jurassic Park/World tradition for Spielberg was that Camp Cretaceous stayed true to everything that had come before it – including the scares. As Kreamer explained:

“When Steven gave the okay for the project, when he gave the final sign-off, his marching orders were, ‘Don’t do the kiddy version. It needs to feel like it’s Jurassic Park. It needs to feel like it’s Jurassic World.’ And we went for it.”

Exactly how removed from any sort of “kiddy version” Camp Cretaceous will be remains to be seen. However, the trailer does have a certain degree of severity to it that isn’t typically seen in other animated series derived from more mature material. It’s also understandable why Spielberg wouldn’t want to see something that he’s put so much time and energy into over the years turned into a lesser version of itself. The Jurassic Park films have never quite shied away from darker subject matter, even if much of its fanbase is made up of children. It’s safe to say that if children are going to watch Camp Cretaceous, they’ll already be familiar with what a trip to Isla Nublar entails.

Previously, a Jurassic Park animated series had been in the works, but it never quite got off the ground before being canceled. This too was aimed at not being a “kiddy version,” but ultimately, Spielberg didn’t get involved. With Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, however, there appears to be some direct influence from the man who first brought the world Jurassic Park, meaning that this animated series could definitely be worth the time of any fan of the franchise.
