So-called America’s favorite television show Dallas aired from 1978-1991. It was one of the longest-running hour-long prime-time dramas in television history and certainly has not been forgotten. In 2012, the show was even briefly brought back with many of the same actors playing their iconic roles. Today, the entire series is available on Amazon Prime, much to the joy of thousands of long-time fans.

10 Divorce, Ewing Style (8.1/10)

The plot is right there in the title: Sue Ellen is planning to divorce J.R., but to get it she needs proof of his infidelity. She hires a detective to follow him and collect evidence for her.

But of course, J.R. catches on to what she’s doing and instead of trying to reconcile with her, he decides to discredit her. He pays the same detective to give her false reports showing that J.R. is innocent. He uses this and help from Kristin to convince the family that Sue Ellen has started drinking again and needs to be taken back to the sanitarium.

9 Swan Song (8.1/10)

The season 8 finale was bittersweet in many ways. Lucy and Mitch remarried and moved to Atlanta, while Bobby and Pam agree to remarry as well. However, their happiness is ripped away from them when Pam’s half-sister Katherine tries to kill her by hitting her with a car. Bobby pushes Pam out of the way just in time, but is hit himself and dies.

Fans of the show were devastated when this happened. The show also took a slight dip in ratings during season nine because Bobby Ewing had been “the good son.” Luckily the producers and Patrick Duffy, who played Bobby, realized their mistakes and brought Bobby back in the season nine finale, “Blast From the Past.”

8 Jock’s Trial: Part 2 (8.10/10)

Later in season three, after “Divorce, Ewing Style,” Sue Ellen really does begin drinking again after a tragedy leaves her feeling desperate and vulnerable. J.R. gets frustrated with her when she shows up to the courtroom for Jock Ewing’s trial smelling like alcohol. But of course, Sue Ellen throws it back in his face, knowing that J.R. wants her to fail so that he can continue to discredit her.

Meanwhile, Jock’s lawyer is concerned that the District Attorney might really have a good case, and that Jock could lose and go to jail. And Digger, whose health continues to decline, reveals some information that surprises and terrifies Pam. Digger and Miss Ellie’s final moments together are the ultimate in bittersweet.

7 Hush, Hush, Sweet Jessie (8.1/10)

Season seven was a crazy ride for the main characters of Dallas, and this penultimate episode of the season begins bringing a lot of those suspicious glances and dropped hints together.

News of Mark’s death spreads to Southfork when his lawyer delivers Mark’s final letter to Pam that admits he died of suicide. Meanwhile, J.R. is continuing to investigate Miss Ellie’s suitor Clayton because he wants to keep the two apart. Clayton ends up revealing a big secret about his home and family, and in the end Miss Ellie disappears with Amy, who apparently has had an axe to grind with Miss Ellie for quite a while.

6 Ewing-Gate (8.2/10)

It’s hardly surprising that yet rather season finale makes this list. Dallas was famous for its season finale cliffhangers, and season four’s was no exception.

Here, Sue Ellen finally leaves J.R. behind. After years of an up-and-down terrible marriage, secret investigations, one visit to a sanitarium and charges of a shooting, Sue Ellen has finally had it. But, J.R. manages to keep her from taking their son John Ross with her, while also managing to get out of the Senate investigation. (Obviously, the name of this episode is a play on Watergate.) Meanwhile, Cliff makes a surprising discovery when he goes to Southfork to meet Bobby.

5 Ewing Inferno (8.2/10)

As a closing to season six, “Ewing Inferno” does a great job of bringing the main cast of Dallas to an appropriate stopping point after a season of insane twists and difficult moral dilemmas. Bobby and J.R. especially have consequences to contend with – J.R. is recognizing the way he has driven Sue Ellen into the arms of alcoholic oblivion, while Bobby has to endure Pam telling him that she’s leaving, that their marriage just isn’t working.

Meanwhile, Ray’s search for who drove Sue Ellen and Mickey off the road comes to a satisfying close and he has a scuffle with J.R. during one of J.R.’s darkest moments yet.

4 Blast From the Past (8.3/10)

The season nine finale is one of the most controversial episodes in Dallas history. It’s the episode that rendered all of season 9 a dream. “Blast From the Past” brought back Bobby Ewing, who was supposed to have died by being run over by a speeding vehicle.

Viewers were incensed. For months, no one knew if he was meant to be an imposter, an evil twin, or if everything had been a dream. Reportedly, even the cast didn’t know. When Victoria Principal’s character Pam reacted to seeing Bobby in the shower, the actress was reacting to another stand-in. The sequence wasn’t finished editing until an hour before airtime. It was a surprise for everyone and no one knew what to make of it.

3 Who Done It? (8.3/10)

In the season three finale, J.R. Ewing was shot—fatally, the fans were left to presume. Everyone from the show was tight-lipped about it, and even when they met Queen Elizabeth II, they didn’t tell her who shot J.R.

Everyone, including Queen Elizabeth, got their answer in this season four episode, “Who Done It?” 83 million Americans watched the episode the night it aired, breaking a record at the time. In it, Sue Ellen is forced to spend a night behind bars because the Ewings won’t bail her out. She’s charged with shooting J.R. and goes through a lot of the processing before the real would-be-killer is finally revealed.

2 End Game (8.6/10)

The season seven finale is so dramatic that it’s no surprise that it is one of the most highly rated episodes of the entire series.

After all of his antics—blackmail, snooping, violence, and more—it’s hardly surprising that J.R. Ewing becomes the focus of a lot of people’s hatred at some point in Dallas. It happens more than once, really, but it’s in the season seven finale that a lot of people come together at Southfork to hate him. Meanwhile, a search for both Miss Ellie and Jessica, who went missing in the previous episode thanks to Amy, continues.

1 A House Divided (8.9/10)

“A House Divided” is probably the single most famous episode of Dallas history. It created a shot that was heard ‘round the world when J.R. Ewing was shot at the end of it, leaving fans uncertain of what his fate would be.

The season three finale unfolds at a rapid—almost furious—pace. Bobby decides to leave Southfork, unable to put up with the family’s shady behavior. Sue Ellen asks J.R. “which slut” he plans to sleep with that night, then manages to show her own shock at how much their marriage has deteriorated. And J.R., of course, reaches new heights of greed and evil, resulting in the now infamous shooting that closed out the season.
