Joker is one of the most twisted villains in all of DC and here are some of the darkest versions of the character to ever exist. Created decades ago in 1940 by Bill Finger, Bob Kane, and Jerry Robinson, the Clown Prince of Crime has ascended to be the biggest foe of Bruce Wayne a.k.a. Batman. Because of this title, there have been countless different versions of Joker to be put to the page or the screen.
Cesar Romero and Jack Nicholson each played Joker before, but it is widely accepted that Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the character in The Dark Knight is the best version ever seen in live-action, and one of the best across all formats. Ledger won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his turn and it is a performance that continues to impress. But, this version of Joker created by him and director Christopher Nolan is also one of the darkest.
Through the comics, movies, and TV shows, the wide-ranging portrayals of Joker all attempt to capture the crazy side to him. In contrast to most of the entries, one of the darkest versions of Joker ever created is when Martha Wayne becomes the supervillain. This tragic turn for her comes during the Flashpoint storyline where Bruce was killed on that fateful night instead of her and Thomas. While the latter became a darker version of Batman, Martha lost her mind and became Joker. The acts she commits are dark on their own, but so too is her death. She jumps off a cliff when told about the other reality where Bruce became Batman, as she could not stand the thought of him turning against her.
The Martha Wayne Joker joins a long line of terrifying versions of the character. Mark Hamill’s work as the character for Batman: The Animated Series has made him the voice of Joker in several different shows and video games over the years. He even voiced him in Batman: The Killing Joke, which is one of the darkest versions of Joker without question. Even Jared Leto’s portrayal in Suicide Squad was dark on its own, but he made his Joker all the more disturbing with his on-set antics. When all of these performances and comic versions like the New 52 Joker are considered, it just goes to show how dark Joker can get.
