The NPD results from the month of June have come out, and The Last of Us Part II reigns on top of the North American sales charts. Perhaps controversy does help games thrive in the marketplace.

The Last of Us Part II also reached #3 on the Top 10 Best Sellers list for the year, behind Animal Crossing: New Horizons and the leader of the pack, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Late last month, Sony reported that the game sold over 4 million copies in a matter of just two days, making it the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive.

Despite a mixed reception from fans due to a twist in the second half, LGBT characters, and an unexpected ending, The Last of Us Part II has sold incredibly well for Sony. It currently holds a 94 Metacritic (1 less than the original), and the game reviewed pretty well over here on TheGamer with a 3.5/5.

This news is huge for representation in gaming; it shows a wonderful portrayal of a gay relationship between two women, and it has a strong trans character who isn’t afraid to go against his clan’s beliefs. In addition, it has a heavy theme of forgiveness and empathy that’s needed in a time of vitriol and disbandment.

We have little information on what lies ahead for The Last of Us series, but with sales like this, there’s a possibility it could continue. The ending actually leaves the continuation of the series open-ended in two possible directions.

Before the game released, Naughty Dog did mention that there could be a multiplayer entry in the series down the line. The studio said back in September 2019 that we will experience “the fruits of [their] team’s online ambition, but not as part of The Last of Us Part II.” It also said that the team has fans of the Factions mode from the original The Last of Us, and that they’re “excited to share more when it’s ready.”

The June NPD results also show that prior PlayStation Vita exclusive Persona 4 Golden is #18 on the list after its release on Steam, and Nintendo’s usually-sold-out workout title Ring Fit Adventure took the #7 spot.
