Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) found out about the MCU’s Spider-Man (Tom Holland) because Peter Parker revealed his origin story on YouTube. For years, the web-slinging hero existed in his own franchise from Sony Pictures Entertainment, but that all changed when Marvel Studios struck a collaboration deal with Sony that allowed them to use the hero in their movies. Instead of introducing him through his solo adventure, the new version of Spider-Man was incorporated in Captain America: Civil War first as Tony’s recruit for Team Iron Man.

Since then, the friendly-neighborhood hero has appeared in four more films — two of which are his standalone blockbusters (Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home) and the remaining ones Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Peter’s story has been intricately linked with Tony’s as the pair developed a close mentor-mentee relationship following their initial encounter, but it has yet to be revealed how the genius billionaire found his prodigy — until now.

The newly-released book The Wakanda Files includes a segment entitled “Tony Stark Personal Log” that details the businessman’s initial findings on Peter Parker. As it turns out, Iron Man stumbled upon the young hero on YouTube, finding a video in which the young hero revealed how being bitten by a radioactive spider gave him superhuman strength. Tony was immediately so intrigued by the idea that he researched the hero from Queens; this led him to the video of Spider-Man catching a car — presumably, the same one he showed Peter when confronting him about his superhero identity in Civil War. The final notes on Spider-Man were Tony wondering about the web-shooters and where they came from.

The prologue for Homecoming showed Peter obsessively taking videos of his trip to Germany after Tony brought him as back-up for his battle against Team Captain America (Chris Evans), so the idea of a younger version of Peter documenting his adventures and even revealing how he got his powers, albeit not coming clean about his true identity, checks out with what’s been shown on the big screen. Since superheroes are the norm in the MCU, with the Avengers freely functioning as a team (largely without secret identities), an anonymous kid claiming he got superpowers is presumably not a huge deal in this universe. Funnily, by Far From Home, Peter appeared to have lost interest in taking home videos, with Flash Thompson (Tony Revolori) picking up the hobby.

While Tony’s log about Spider-Man is not dated, it’s possible that the senior hero had been keeping an eye on the young man for quite a while before he recruited Peter for Team Iron Man. There’s no mention in The Wakanda Files of Tony bringing him in because of the grown rift between Tony and Captain America; instead, he seemed to be keener on having Spider-Man as an Avenger. What’s significant here is, if Tony was already considering doing so at that point, why was he suddenly hesitant about it in Homecoming? Perhaps there is more background information that’s not included in The Wakanda Files. Regardless, now that Spider-Man’s real identity has been revealed in the MCU, as seen in the mid-credits scene for Far From Home, it will be interesting to see if the YouTube video referenced in the The Wakanda Files will somehow factor into the still-untitled Spider-Man 3 film. With an increased interest in both Spider-Man and Peter Parker, it’s possible that people will scour the internet to learn more about him and his past. Like Tony, they can stumble upon the clip of Peter talking about his origin story — which would allow said footage to be incorporated into the film and shown on the big screen.
