Fans of the tongue-in-cheek humor of The Outer Worlds are going to have a lot to chew on in the coming expansion, Peril on Gorgon. A new gameplay video has been released with developer commentary, showing off new weapons and settings.

In the process of saving Halcyon from the mismanagement of the ruling corporations, our protagonist heads to Gorgon, where strange things are happening. This will be one of two expansions to the original game. If you’re interested in picking it up, it will be released on September 9 for $14.99. If you’re a Game Pass subscriber, you’ll get 10% off. The expansion is exactly that, an expansion of the story, rather than a separate add-on. The intention is that you will visit Gorgon before locking in the end-run of the main storyline, so for those of you who’ve beaten the game, you’re going to need to go backwards a little bit—but it’ll be worth it.

The nearly 12-minute video walks us through a side quest of the game, while senior narrative designer and lead game director Carrie Patel tells us what’s happening. About five and a half minutes into the video, we get our first look at a new science weapon, the “Pest Extermination” tool. This melee weapon has grav-plating on the bottom to draw enemies to you, where you can slice them up with your blade. Speaking of enemies, there are new Maurader variants that are specific to Gorgon. Who they are and why they’re there is part of the story of the DLC and will help deepen the overall narrative.

Of course, you don’t always need to shoot your way through the quests. There is a new kind of “grass” on Gorgon that will allow you to sneak past anyone that you don’t want to fight. This will come in handy if you visit Gorgon in the early game because the Mauraders and wildlife here are high-level nasties that were meant for the late game. No matter how you play—even if that means you like to kill everyone—you will be able to complete the quests in Peril on Gorgon. There are multiple ways to learn the story of Gorgon, so even if you kill a quest giver before they give you a quest, you’ll still be able to learn that part of the story.

If you’re a fan of the Fallout franchise or The Elder Scrolls, you’ll enjoy The Outer Worlds. One of the slight complaints about the base game though is that the story feels a little too fast-paced to be completely satisfying. The DLCs, Peril on Gorgon included, should help alleviate that feeling and provide a more robust narrative experience. For those of us who thoroughly enjoy the Halcyon universe, it’s a welcome addition.
