Warning: SPOILERS for The Walking Dead season 11, episode 2, “Acheron: Part 2.”

Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan) has shared another story about her and Hershel’s time on the road alone in The Walking Dead season 11, episode 2, “Acheron: Part 2” – and it isn’t good news for the current state of the world. Returning to the group after six years, it’s obvious that Maggie has been through her fair share of struggles during their time apart. Her haunting story reveals some insight into her current state of mind and helps explain how she has become the battle-hardened character who returned to Alexandria.

Leaving her position at Hilltop to help Georgie develop her community, Maggie began to become estranged from her friends over decisions on how to proceed with Alexandria in Rick’s absence. Despite their estrangement, Maggie arrives to help the group during the final Whisperer battle, bringing reinforcements along with her from her community, Meridian. Since their return, it’s clear that Maggie and her community have been through their share of hardships, revealing stories of death and destruction piece by piece. Her relationship with Negan is a time bomb waiting to blow – he did murder her husband and leave her for dead, after all – and her decisions as a leader make it clear that Maggie’s time on the road has hardened her.

After her decision to leave Gage for dead in the subway, members of their scavenging group – particularly Alden – begin to question the ruthlessness of her choices. That’s when Maggie treats the group to an eerie story. While on the road, Maggie and Hershel encountered an elderly man who offered them food in exchange for help. Maggie’s instincts told her something about the man was off, and they served her well, as she discovered the man had chloroform in his pocket to subdue her with. Taking care of him, Maggie secured Hershel before she dispatched the rest of the men without compassion. When it comes down to survival for her and her son and the lives of strangers, Maggie will do what it takes to survive. But as she explored the house, she discovered those men are anything but victims.

Scouring the house for supplies, it’s clear what intentions the elderly man had for her; in the attic, she found heavily deformed walkers, all of them women, who were in a horrific state previously unseen on The Walking Dead. All of them have had their limbs removed, left to writhe on the ground like animals. Those women all met horrific ends at the hands of those men; they were likely kidnapped under the guise of receiving aid in an unforgiving world and kept in the attic for the sexual use of their captors. Their stomachs were distended, and what was inside was fighting to escape, answering an age-old Walking Dead question about walkers in the womb. When they’d outlived their purpose, their walkers were kept captive in the attic, extending their misery for as long as possible. After emptying the house of its food, Maggie and Hershel went on their way again.

Though Maggie tells Alden that she feels nothing while telling him the horrific story, it gives insight into her own set of morals. While she easily could have left those walkers to suffer – they were no threat to her in their state – Maggie showed them the first piece of compassion they had seen in a long time. Life in The Walking Dead is full of contradictions, and Maggie’s story is no exemption. Despite what she says, Maggie’s story betrays the humanity she still carries in the world of the undead.
