Here’s what the ending of haunted house horror The Witch In The Window means. Indie horror The Witch In The Window is the third feature from director Andy Mitton whose previous work YellowBrickRoad and We Go On were co-directed with Jesse Holland. Mitton excels in his first solo outing with a minuscule budget and a compelling story that veers between horror and heart-warming – often with an emphasis on the latter.

Shudder Original The Witch In The Window tells the tale of Simon (Alex Draper), a house flipper who is separated from wife Beverly (Arija Bareikis) and takes his 12-year-old son Finn (Charlie Tacker) from New York to rural Vermont to renovate an old farmhouse. Soon enough, strange things start happening around the house and their neighbor Louis (Greg Naughton) tells Simon and Finn that a woman named Lydia (Carol Stanzione) – locally rumored to be a witch responsible for her husband and son’s death – used to live there. According to Louis, Lydia seemed to enjoy her fearsome reputation and had a habit of sitting in an armchair and looking out of her window while looming over passersby. It was in that spot Lydia was later found dead, thus becoming the titular witch in the window.

Initially undeterred by the fact they’re probably living with a ghost, Simon and Finn continue to fix up the farmhouse and grow closer in the process but soon discover their renovations have the effect of making Lydia’s spirit grow stronger. After a terrifying encounter with Lydia, Simon decides to send Finn back to his mother in New York. Though Louis advises Simon he should leave too, he decides to stay and admits he bought the house hoping that once all the repairs were done he could convince his estranged wife and Finn to live there with him and reunite his family.

Towards the end of The Witch In The Window, Simon has another freaky encounter with Lydia and finally seems ready to leave the haunted house behind. Until, that is, Lydia appears as his estranged wife Beverly and preys on his insecurities by reminding him that abandoning the house would leave him in debt and his family disappointed. Lydia tells Simon he can avoid all of that simply by staying at the house and trading places with her so she can go free. Soon after, Simon’s neighbor Louis discovers him dead in the very same window Lydia died at – ostensibly due to a heart problem he suffers from.

The final scenes of The Witch In The Window see Finn and Beverly arriving at the farmhouse after Simon’s funeral to find it perfectly restored and seemingly devoid of bad feeling. Finn finds a note his father left him reading “It’s a good house again, if you want it. I haven’t left. I never will” before the scene cuts away to the streets of New York where Lydia’s spirit is seen roaming free. Later, Finn and Beverly have moved into the farmhouse and Finn says goodnight to his father, as a disembodied knock sounds in reply. While the house is still haunted, Finn knows that it’s now haunted by the benevolent spirit of Simon rather than the nefarious ghost of Lydia and is exactly what his late father described it as – “a good house.”
