The Witcher Characters & Their Disney Counterparts

Although The Witcher is far from a Disney story, its main characters have a lot in common with the Disney heroes and villains.

With its graphic violence, provocative situations, and gritty atmosphere, viewers might think Netflix’s The Witcher couldn’t be further from anything created by Disney. It follows Geralt of Rivia, an infamous monster hunter stalking the Continent looking for his next payday, until fate and chance put him in the path of a lost princess and a powerful sorceress.

When fans consider its larger-than-life characters, mythological creatures, and intriguing medieval setting, it’s very complimentary to something from the House of Mouse. To consider which Disney character best aligned with the main cast of The Witcher, it was essential to consider both their parallel stories and their appearances.

10 Jaskier: Phil

The Witcher Characters & Their Disney Counterparts

Sarcastic, opportunistic, and playful, Jaskier is a lot like Phil from Hercules. He acts as Geralt of Rivia’s friend, traveling companion, and PR person. Like Phil, Jaskier travels the land with his hero, endeavoring to find him great feats to accomplish so they’ll both get paid.

Jaskier may not be as rough around the edges as Phil, but Hercules finds Phil cynical and jaded from a lifetime of trying to find the perfect “hero” to promote. During the flashbacks depicting his time with Perseus, Phil reveals his more friendly and agreeable side.

9 Ciri: Rapunzel

The Witcher Characters & Their Disney Counterparts

At the beginning of Season 1, Ciri found herself cloistered in a castle in a kingdom that she couldn’t leave. Deemed too important to the realm for her abilities, she was tucked away from supposed threats, which ended up toppling her family’s lands regardless. She escaped her sheltered citadel and left to seek The Witcher.

Ciri is a lot like Rapunzel in Tangled, who is kept from realizing her own potential through the manipulations of her mother. When she does discover everything she’s capable of, she blossoms into a determined young woman just like Ciri who, with Geralt’s guidance, will be able to develop her powers.

8 Stregobor: Merlin

The Witcher Characters & Their Disney Counterparts

A wizard and illusionist, Stregobor is part of the Chapter of mages, and tries to have Yennefer assigned to Nilfgaard, but she outsmarts him. When Cintra needs aid against Nilfgaard’s armies, Stregobor doesn’t want to go to war for them because they have rejected him and his mages for years.

Stubborn, reactionary, and cantankerous, Stregobor closely resembles Merlin who, after offering assistance to the king of the land and getting rebuffed, eventually decides the kingdom should handle its own affairs. He reluctantly agrees to mentor Arthur the stableboy, as Stregobor mentors Istredd before the Nilfgaardian Empire tries to take over the Continent.

7 Fringilla: Yzma

A member of the Lodge of Sorceresses along with Yennefer, Fringilla Vigo becomes a Nilfgaardian sorceress after concluding her studies. She fights for the Nilfgaardian Empire at the Battle of Sodden Hill, where she faces off against her former friend Yennefer and receives a blinding blow.

Fringilla has a lot in common with Yzma from The Emperor’s New Groove, who is a powerful sorceress in her own right and very ambitious. Fringilla even has her own Kronk to do her bidding: Cahir aep Ceallach, who she believes is the “one who freed Nilfgaard from the Usurper”.

6 Istredd: John Smith

A budding sorcerer and researcher who formed an intimate bond with Yennefer while the two were at Aretuza, Istredd believes that they could be together despite serious differences in their personalities, ambitions, and motivations. Ultimately though they reunite later in the season, and their romance can’t be rekindled.

Istredd’s character trajectory bears a resemblance to John Smith’s who, in Pocahontas, also falls in love with a free spirit but wants her to love him on his terms. When she doesn’t want the lifestyle to which he ascribes, they have to separate, and he returns to England. When they meet again (in Pocahontas: Journey To The New World) they have lost their magic together.

5 Mousesack: Zazu

The adviser of Queen Calanthe, as well as a skilled druid, Mousesack is also an old friend of Geralt’s. He’s invaluable in protecting Princess Ciri when her mother falls to the advancing Nilfgaard armies, but is captured by the Black Knight while trying to help her escape, and ultimately is killed by his Doppler.

Like Zazu, King Mufasa’s chief adviser in The Lion King, Mousesack has a large appetite for gossip. Zazu is also imprisoned after the death of the kingdom’s ruler, though unfortunately, Mousesack doesn’t share his luck for being rescued.

4 Tissaia: Elsa

The Witcher Characters & Their Disney Counterparts

The rectoress of Aretuza, Tissaia de Vries is perceived as harsh in the beginning of the series, spending four marks on young Yennefer from Vengerberg and disciplining her into being a sorceress who can control magic. Tissaia is showcased as a woman unbothered by sacrificing her initiates -by turning them into eels- to ensure Aretuza still hums with magic, and finds many commonalities between herself and Yennefer.

A powerful enchantress once thought to be evil, Elsa from Frozen is similar to Tissaia in that she is a mage who lets emotions control her, rather than control her emotions. Because of an error in her past, she must go on the same redemption arc that Tissaia does to be welcomed back into the fold of her family.

3 Cahir aep Ceallach: Captain Phoebus

The Witcher Characters & Their Disney Counterparts

Cahir aep Ceallach, often referred to as The Nilfgaardian, is tasked with personally locating Princess Ciri at Cintra as Nilfgaard forces march North to conquer the rest of the Continent. Though he appears as a villain throughout the series, much of his motivations remain a mystery. Though he’s capable of great cruelty (as in the case of the Doppler), in the source material he eventually undergoes a change of heart.

Cahir is a lot like Captain Phoebus, who originally is the captain of the guard for Judge Claude Frollo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame and carries out his cruel demands. Eventually, he defects to join the people of Paris in their fight against him, proving that villainy is a matter of perspective.

2 Yennefer: Ursula

The Witcher Characters & Their Disney Counterparts

Yennefer spends the majority of Season 1 vacillating between being a villain and being an anti-hero, with the deeply seeded baggage of her abusive early life playing a key factor in her personal identity. Though wildly mistreated, she is nevertheless one of the most powerful sorceresses on the Continent.

Ursula the Sea Witch from The Little Mermaid has a similar tale of woe, which began with being cast out of Triton’s kingdom for being too interested in dark magic. Her bitterness and pettiness almost fueled her road to revenge, including a transformation -like Yennefer’s- into a glamorous raven-haired beauty.

1 Geralt: The Beast

Trained from a boy to be a powerful warrior, and manipulated genetically to be capable of powerful feats of magic, The Witcher Geralt of Rivia has been mistrusted and mistreated for much of his adult life due to being different from most of the Continent’s inhabitants.

Like The Beast in Beauty and the Beast, Geralt has a surly demeanor and penchant for aggressive verbal attacks as sharp as his blade. Beneath his misanthropic demeanor, however, is a sensitive man calloused by a cruel world. He ultimately proves his bravery to those he loves and begins to believe in his own heroism.
