Thanks to a wide variety of Thor stories and an impressive turn by Chris Hemsworth in the MCU, the wielder of Mjolnir has remained one of the most popular figures in the Marvel Universe. The God of Thunder has had a steady presence in the ever-expanding world of Marvel Comics since the ’60s, and the amalgamation of royal, warrior, and space god has meant that Thor’s adventures have been frequently bizarre.

Given his birthright and the multiple millennia he’s been alive, Thor has had plenty of time to get into outlandish situations, both with the Avengers and on his own. These weird comic book arcs prove that what might rattle other superheroes is all in a day’s work for the Mighty Thor.

10 Unworthy Thor #1

Thor Odinson was also at one time the God of Goats, at least when he was seen riding Toothgnasher, one of two giant flying goats that he used for traveling when being an outsider to his own kingdom in Thor Unworthy #1 prevented him from securing more conventional forms of transportation. An indestructible goat like Gnasher turned out to be a worthy ally, and he was also a fierce combatant.

Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder have been around since the mid-’70s pulling Thor’s chariot (based on Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr of Norse mythology), but it’s Gnasher that got the spotlight for the narrative involving Thor needing to find the Universe’s Ultimate Mjolnir. Fans can look forward to seeing the goats in action in Thor: Love and Thunder.

9 Old Man Thor

Jason Aaron’s run of Thor has been called one of the greatest in the Asgardian’s history besides Walt Simonson’s. Taking place across multiple time frames, it follows Thor in the past, present, and future as he tries to uncover the mysterious disappearance of gods through the ages.

His quest leads him to Gorr, the God Butcher, whose weaponry he eventually uses to take on Galactus in the future. This iteration of the God of Thunder, Old Man Thor, proved to be one of his most popular; a one-eyed King of Asgard, who boasts a mechanical arm not dissimilar to the Winter Soldier’s and has no trouble keeping up in battle.

8 Original Sin

With his incredible knowledge of everyone’s secrets, Nick Fury always gave the impression he could be a little bit evil, and with just three words whispered to Thor in Original Sin, he was able to poison his mind and make him unworthy of wielding Mjolnir. This caused a ripple effect that made Thor humiliated in the eyes of Malekith, who wasn’t one to waste a good opportunity to defeat his enemy.

Using Thor’s own axe, he chopped off his right arm while it was trapped under a pile of boulders. Fortunately, Thor was able to obtain an Uru prosthetic, but the damage to his psyche was done and infinitely worse than any physical pain he may have suffered.

7 Spawn/Thor Crossover

Originally from the Spawn series by Image Comics, Angela was created by Todd MacFarlane and Neil Gaiman, but due to friction between the creators the rights to her character fell into Marvel’s hands, and she debuted in the Original Sin event as Thor -and Loki’s- sister.

She might have looked like a Valkyrie, but she was a death-dealing warrior that had more in common with Hela than her long-lost brothers. The sibling reunion was anything but joyous, though the trio did eventually end up fighting on the same side.

6 League Of Realms

While Thor might have been a founding member of the Avengers, he always had Asgardian matters to attend to, so eventually, he decided that the Nine Realms needed their own superhero squad, which he dubbed the League of Realms. Originally recruited to fight Malekith the Accursed, they took on all manner of troubles in Asgard, Niflheim, and beyond.

This misfit posse included a stoic giant, a steely warrior, a quick-drawing elf, a crazed troll, and a dwarf with a love of explosives. It allowed Thor to have some fun adventures with his own crew.

5 Fear Itself

In the crossover event Fear Itself, Thor defeated Cul, the God of Fear and Odin’s evil brother, saving Asgard and the rest of the world in the process. When the wicked god was resurrected, Odin was surprisingly supportive towards him, even making him the chief of Asgard’s secret police.

In that storyline, Odin was a tyrant, consumed by Thor’s loss of status and determining the identity of Thor’s replacement. At the time, it was left up to Jane Foster to keep Asgard in check and handle the police state that it turned into.

4 Time Runs Out

During the Secret Wars and Time Runs Out events, the entire Marvel Universe was brought to the brink of chaos. With the Multiverse collapsing, Thor and Hyperion had no choice but to go to the furthest reaches of space on a search for the root of its destruction, initiating a “buddy” storyline that started out initially humorous.

Eventually, Thor and Hyperion made the shocking discovery that Doctor Doom was working with Doctor Strange of all people and that the pair had a hand in the catastrophe. They ended up having to wage war against the Beyonders, a conflict that saw them sacrifice their lives in defense of the universe.

3 Marvel Zombies

Thor has been deemed unworthy to carry Mjolnir many times, but only once from being a member of the undead. At the height of the popularity of The Walking Dead craze, Marvel Zombies was introduced, a limited series that speculated what would happen on Earth-2149 if infection took over and plunged it into macabre mayhem.

Thor and every other superhero tried to curb the spread but ultimately failed, and eventually, every character in the Marvel Universe became a member of the shambling horde. Zombie Thor was forced to make his own Mjolnir out of found objects and debris.

2 Secret Wars: Thor Corps

After Thor and Hyperion sacrificed themselves in their fight against the Beyonders, Doctor Doom resurrected the God of Thunder — along with every other incarnation of him across every other universe. Doom also saved the Multiverse by combining all the universes into Battleworld, a planet which he ruled as God Emperor Doom.

Though Doom brought back every possible version of each of Marvel’s superheroes, it was only the multiple Thors he selected to be his police force, an entity he called Thor Corps. Just who was in this elite fighting force? Storm Thor, Rogue Thor, Beta Ray Bill Thor, and even Frog Thor (Throg).

1 Thor #8

In recent Thor comics, in which Thor was crowned the King of Asgard, Mjolnir suddenly became too heavy for him to lift. When even Loki could wield Thor’s hammer but not the God of Thunder, Thor decided to hurl it to Earth as a test. This led to it landing in Broxton, Oklahoma (a former home of Asgard in the days after the Final Ragnarok), where an elderly mechanic named Adam Aziz happened upon it.

Since anyone could lift Mjolnir, not just the worthy, he immediately gained the powers of Thor the moment he picked it up. His time as the God of Thunder was short-lived, however, as Thor soon flew to Earth when Mjolnir behaved as he expected. The arc made it seem like a new Thor had been created from an everyman, but the only thing Adam got to do was go for a test flight before handing Mjolnir back to its rightful keeper.
