TShirt Design Contest Reveals That Pokémon Sword & Shield Will Have Character Customization

The ability to customize the appearance of the player character in Pokémon Sword & Shield has been confirmed, thanks to a contest that took place in Japan.

Uniqlo is a Japanese clothing company that is known for collaborating with popular anime and video game series. There have been Pokémon clothing lines designed by Uniqlo in the past and the latest design used by the company will be making its way into Pokémon Sword & Shield. According to Serebii, Uniqlo recently held a contest for a Pokémon t-shirt design. The winner of the contest was a design that used both Gyarados and Magikarp.

The winning design will be turned into a real shirt that people can buy from Uniqlo, but more importantly, the shirt will be wearable in Pokémon Sword & Shield. The contest image showed pictures of the male and female protagonists of Pokémon Sword & Shield wearing the winning t-shirt design.

This confirms that Pokémon Sword & Shield is bringing character customization back to the series. The brief snippets of footage we have seen of Pokémon Sword & Shield have shown the protagonists wearing a single outfit, except for a brief moment where the male player character is shown wearing a soccer uniform.

Pokémon X & Y introduced the ability to customize the player character to a limited degree, as players could change the skin color of their character and were able to dress them in various outfits that could be bought or unlocked over the course of the game. Character customization was a popular feature that would return in Pokémon Sun & Moon, Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon, and in Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu! & Let’s Go Eevee! It’s not surprising that the feature would return in Pokémon Sword & Shield, but it is a welcome addition to the game.

Serebii has also stated that more information about Pokémon Sword & Shield will be revealed in the next issue of CoroCoro magazine, which is due to be released on June 21, 2019.

Pokémon Sword & Shield is due to be released for the Nintendo Switch in 2019.
