Google is finally releasing the unlocked white version of the Pixel 4A 5G. Until recently, consumers who wanted an unlocked Pixel 4A 5G could only purchase the black version, called Just Black. The white version, or Clearly White, was exclusive to Verizon customers.

The Pixel 4A 5G was released alongside the Pixel 4A and Pixel 5 in 2020. It’s Google’s answer for consumers seeking a futureproof, budget-friendly smartphone. Although 5G connectivity is its biggest advantage over the regular Pixel 4A, the Pixel 4A 5G also has a larger screen, a better processor, and an extra camera lens.

The Verge confirmed with Google that the Clearly White version of the Pixel 4A 5G will begin shipping to customers on January 28. Retailers such as B&H Photo are currently advertising the smartphone on their websites, but the Google Store has yet to promote the alternate option. Looks-wise, the Clearly White Pixel 4A 5G is identical to the Verizon-exclusive. However, the Verizon-exclusive version costs $599 while the unlocked Clearly White Pixel 4A 5G will retail for $499. The lower price is due to the unlocked version only having sub-6GHz 5G connectivity. The Verizon-exclusive supports millimeter-wave (mmWave) 5G connectivity.

Not all 5G-capable smartphones are created equal. While there is no physical difference between the Clearly White Verizon-exclusive and unlocked version, the Verizon-exclusive’s 5G support may benefit some users. In essence, mmWave 5G has faster speeds and lower latency compared to sub-6GHz 5G. However, mmWave 5G requires special hardware inside smartphones and has a shorter signal range, which means Verizon needs to build more mmWave 5G cell towers to increase the coverage. Consumers who live nearby those cell towers should consider switching to Verizon and purchase the Verizon-exclusive because mmWave 5G speeds are insanely fast. Everyone else will have no issue with the unlocked version as sub-6GHz 5G is the standard for all 5G smartphones.

Verizon has also partnered with other manufacturers such as Apple and Samsung to deliver custom versions of their smartphones. But those considering purchasing the latest 5G smartphones can still hold off. The 5G network is very new and carriers are slowly adapting their services to the latest network. Verizon may be the leader in 5G adoption so far but the other carriers are beginning to catch up. In the near future, all carriers will have similar 5G network support, just like how it is currently with the 4G network.
