John Cena entered the Fast & Furious universe in F9 as Jakob Toretto, the estranged brother of Dom (Vin Diesel) and Mia (Jordana Brewster), but who played young Jakob during the film’s flashback scenes? Cena’s role as an unfamiliar Toretto brother brought more details about Dom’s past to the forefront of F9, and the new storylines and flashbacks introduced some other actors to the franchise as well. Actor Vinnie Bennet and Diesel’s son, Vincent Sinclair Diesel, both play different versions of young Dom, and a TV star appears as young Jakob.

Fast & Furious 9 released on June 25 as a sequel to 2017’s The Fate of the Furious. Directed by Justin Lin, the film follows the franchise’s protagonist Dominic “Dom” Toretto and takes a deeper dive into his past and lineage through conflicts with Jakob. As he attempted to settle down with his wife, Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), and their son, Dom finds himself back in the middle of the action. From elaborate car chases to a weapons hacking scheme to an outer space mission, the Fast saga delivers over-the-top action once again in its ninth main film installment.

In F9, young John Cena is portrayed by English actor Finn Cole. His placement as part of the cast was announced in 2019, though specific details and descriptions about his character were originally kept under wraps. Now, viewers see Cole as young Jakob in the flashbacks to Dom and Jakob’s younger years during the film. Cena praised his costar for his portrayal of the character, saying that Cole essentially created a mini prequel for the franchise. “Finn mastered a young Jakob,” Cena said. “It was a big role and a lot of expectations on that, and he pretty much filmed Fast & Furious 0. He filmed the prequel [to the series] and did an amazing job.”

Currently, Cole is best known for his TV roles, though his involvement in the long-standing Fast & Furious timeline and franchises is no doubt a significant addition to his career. In his most well-known role thus far, Cole plays Michael Gray in Peaky Blinders, the BBC period crime drama that centers on a family of gangsters in the aftermath of World War I. Cole also stars in TNT’s Animal Kingdom as Joshua “J” Cody, a 17-year-old boy who moves in with his estranged criminal relatives following the death of his mother.

In addition to F9, Cole has a few movie credits to his name. His first on-screen role was in the British action film Offender (2012), and he later appeared in the TV movie An Inspector Calls in 2015. Perhaps most recognizable on the list is Slaughterhouse Rulez (2018), the first movie from Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s film and TV production company, Stolen Picture. Along with Cole, Pegg, and Frost, the horror-comedy venture starred Asa Butterfield, Hermione Corfield, Michael Sheen, and Margot Robbie. For future Fast & Furious movies, there’s a good chance that fans haven’t seen the last of young Jakob – and maybe even Finn Cole.
