The character of Prue Halliwell was killed off in the finale of Charmed season 3 when Shannen Doherty, the actor who portrayed her, departed the show amidst reported turmoil with costar Alyssa Milano. Producers first considered recasting Prue, but ended up opting to kill her instead. The death was not completely evident in that episode, and it had to be recut in order to explain Prue’s absence from the show.
Prue, Piper, and Phoebe were the three witch sisters at the center of Charmed, the supernatural-themed show which ran on the now defunct WB from 1998-2006; a reboot of the show began airing on the CW in 2018. The sister’s “Power of Three” was led by eldest sister Prue. She had the power to move things with her mind and, like her sisters, was a Charmed One, which meant she was one of the most powerful witches of all time. As the main protagonist, killing Prue off seemed to be a drastic step for Charmed, but it happened. She was attacked by Shax, a demonic assassin, in the Charmed season 3 finale. Originally a cliffhanger, Prue’s fate was not originally a death as producers seriously considered recasting the role.
Charmed Producer Aaron Spelling offered both Tiffani Thiessen and Jennifer Love Hewitt the role of Prue after Doherty left. Thiessen would’ve been an interesting choice, as Spelling had previously used her in Beverly Hills, 90210 to fill a hole left by Doherty’s exit from that show. Both Thiessen and Hewitt turned down the role. At the time Spelling told that Thiessen wanted to branch into network comedy instead. With the role rejected by two popular actors, the decision was finally made to kill Prue off. It was a bold move, but it did inject a new energy into Charmed.
Charmed Cast A New Halliwell Sister To Complete The Trio
Looking to bring in a younger, fresh-faced actor, a new character was created to complete the trio of witches needed to tell the Charmed story. Paige Matthews was introduced on Charmed as a half-sister that Piper and Phoebe didn’t even know existed. The offspring of their mother (a witch) and a “whitelighter” (a witch’s guardian angel), she was raised by adoptive parents. Her mixed witch/whitelighter background gave her extraordinary powers, including healing and sensing, that the other sisters did not possess, making her an impressive addition to Charmed after Prue’s death.
Rose McGowan was cast in the role of Charmed’s Paige. An experienced movie actor, it was McGowan’s first time as a series regular. She brought a feisty sexiness that the show needed after losing the edge that Doherty previously provided. Charmed went on for five more seasons with Paige as the third sister, pretty much attesting to the strength of the character. Based on her character’s popularity, it seems like killing off Prue was the right decision.
