Why There’s a Giant Ant Playing the Drums in Ant-Man & the Wasp’s Trailer
The trailer for Ant-Man & the Wasp featured a giant ant playing the drums. Why did Marvel include such an odd scene, and is there a deeper meaning?

The trailer for Ant-Man & the Wasp is an absolute visual delight. Marvel released the trailer only days after the theatrical release of Avengers: Infinity War, the blockbuster hit that broke all weekend records. It was a smart move on Marvel’s part; after the darkness of Infinity Way, they decided to give viewers a sunbeam of humor and delight.
But one specific scene in the trailer stands out above the rest. Partway through the trailer, in the middle of all the superhero action and cool voiceovers, there’s a surprise glimpse of a giant ant playing the drums. To some viewers, it’s evidence Marvel’s sense of humor is in danger of jumping the shark. To others, it’s just another joke from the movie studio who actually made people care about a talking raccoon and a giant tree.

Why is there a giant ant playing the drums in Ant-Man & the Wasp? And why have Marvel chosen to include this, of all scenes, in the trailer? Ironically, it’s possible the ant could actually be quite important.
This Seems to be Cassie’s Ant
First of all, let’s establish that this seems to be Cassie’s house – and that means this is probably Cassie’s ant. The first Ant-Man film came to a head with a climactic battle between Ant-Man and Yellowjacket in Cassie Lang’s bedroom. A mishap with a Pym Particle disc led to one of Scott’s ants being enlarged, and Cassie decided to keep it as her pet. “That’s a messed-up looking dog,” one police officer, Gale, noted. WHiH Newsfront later reported sightings of a “Massive Ant-Like Insect.”
Cassie decided to keep the giant ant as a pet, initially hiding it from her family and feeding it scraps under the table. Let’s face it, it would be hard for even a Lang to keep a giant ant a secret from her parents for long, so they presumably allowed Cassie to keep it. Ants can live for up to 15 years, so there’s no reason this ant wouldn’t still be around in Ant-Man & the Wasp. Evidently Cassie has been domesticating it; that may well be her drum-kit, and she could have been teaching it the drums!
But The Ant Is Actually Important
So far, this is just a bit of Marvel humor. But look closely at that scene; it actually reveals a key plot point in the film. The ant is actually wearing a police ankle-tracker on one leg. Presumably, this was the tracker the police were using to keep Scott Lang under house arrest. Having decided to go rogue, Scott has used his genius skills to detach the ankle tracker, and then put it around Cassie’s ant. So long as Cassie keeps the ant indoors, the police will never know Scott has left the house. Well, unless he’s seen in public wearing the Ant-Man suit. But it’s not as though he’s going to go Giant-Man in the middle of the San Francisco River, is it?
This is a classic Marvel move. Everybody’s attention is on the absurdity of the scene, the ridiculous nature of the humor. In reality, the most important detail in the scene is the one it’s easy to miss.
