Actors often become fully immersed in their film environment as they are dedicated to their roles and the art of the screen. But many find themselves contributing to more than just one side of the production, taking on several roles or becoming further involved.

Some actors have directed themselves in films, while others have produced or written the screenplays or music. While some in the audience may be aware of the dual roles actors have taken in their favorite films, others may find themselves completely surprised.

10 Emma Thompson – Sense And Sensibility (1995)

Emma Thompson stars in Sense And Sensibility (1995) in the role of Elinor Dashwood, alongside Alan Rickman, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, and Greg Wise.

But not only did Thompson provide a beautiful performance in the movie, she also wrote the screenplay. The screenplay was an adaptation of the novel “Sense And Sensibility” by Jane Austen and the film won the 1996 Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty (2013) stars Ben Stiller in the leading role of Walter Mitty, the negative assets manager at Life magazine. Stiller performs alongside Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott, and Sean Penn, and the light-hearted, visually stunning film was also directed by Stiller.

Stiller is also known for directing Tropic Thunder (2008) and the Zoolander films, in which he also performed on screen.

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga star as Jackson Maine and Ally in the 2018 critically acclaimed drama, A Star Is Born. The film won the BAFTA Award for Best Original Music for its original song “Shallow,” sung by Cooper and Lady Gaga.

Doctor Who and Marvel Cinematic Universe star Karen Gillan made her writing and directing debut with her film The Party’s Just Beginning (2018).

Gillan wrote the screenplay, directed, and starred in the dark and telling drama as the leading role of Liusaidh, a young woman who finds herself confronting her past as she spirals down a dark path affected by her friend’s suicide.

4 Sylvester Stallone – Rocky Films

Many people know Sylvester Stallone for his role as Rocky Balboa in the Rocky films, but what viewers might not know is that Stallone also wrote the screenplay for the films. He also took on the role of director for the latter films in the series.

He truly was involved in every aspect of the films’ vision and creative process. Rocky (1976) won the 1977 Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Film Editing. Stallone also contributed to the Rambo and Creed film series.

3 Margot Robbie – I, Tonya (2017)

I, Tonya (2017) is a sports drama based on the events of figure skater Tonya Harding’s career and her involvement in the 1994 scandal surrounding her competitor, Nancy Kerrigan.

Margot Robbie gave a strong and dedicated performance in the lead role of Tonya Harding and was also one of the producers of the film. Robbie is one of the founders of the LuckyChap Entertainment production company.

2 Mel Gibson – Braveheart (1995)

Mel Gibson’s directing effort produced the Oscar-winning war drama, Braveheart (1995). The film won the 1996 Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Sound Editing.

Gibson stars in the film’s main role, William Wallace, a Scottish warrior who battles for Independence against King Edward I of England. The film captured viewers with its brutality, serenity, and determination.

1 Denzel Washington – Fences (2016)

Fences (2016) is based on the play by playwright, August Wilson. The film is directed by Denzel Washington, who also performs on-screen, alongside 2017 Academy Award Winner Viola Davis, who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in the film.

This isn’t the only film Washington has directed and starred in, with the actor having also directed and performed in Antwone Fisher (2002) and The Great Debaters (2007).
