However, what really offers horror fans a treat are the freaky monster movies.

While the Universal Monsters are scary and the giant monsters are frightening, the freaky monster movies feature creatures that are both disgusting and horrifying, creepy and scary all at the same time. These monsters often push boundaries and remain living rent-free in viewers’ minds long after the end credits roll.

10 Colossal (2016) – 6.2

In 2016, a black comedy horror sci-fi film about an extremely freaky monster hit called Colossal. The movie also had a big cast, with Anne Hathaway leading the way as an unemployed writer who accidentally manifests a giant creature while also dealing with alcoholism. While the film was not a financial success and flopped hard in theaters, it was a critical darling, arriving first at the Toronto International Film Festival and has all the tools to be a cult classic for years to come.

In 1982, Frank Henenlotter created his masterpiece with the movie Basket Case. The People Under the Stairs was about a young boy and two home burglars trapped in a house that belongs to a strange couple. When they go into a hidden room under the stairs, they find something horrific and realize they might never get out alive.

Horror novelist Clive Barker directed his own freaky monster story Nightbreed in 1990, based on his novella Cabal. It was a rare monster movie because the monsters were the good guys, creatures who wanted to be left alone but hunted down and massacred by humans who hated and feared them. The kaleidoscope of creatures Craven invented for this movie was both grotesque and freaky as they fought for those homes and lives.

The Babadook, released in 2014, was an Australian “monster” movie that was an allegory for deeper, real-world issues. Based on the 2005 short film by director Jennifer Kent, The Babadook is about a mother raising her six-year-old son Samuel alone after her husband’s death. Her son has become an insomniac and believes a monster is after him, so he starts to build weapons to fight the creature. The entire movie is an allegory for grief, and the monster is the trauma that has the mother almost destroying what is left of her family.

Both were about an alien invader in the Arctic, but Carpenter’s version was a movie with one of the freakiest monsters in all movie history. The alien could take the shape and form of anyone it killed, meaning no one in the Arctic station knew who they could trust. However, when it was flushed out, the monster was one of the most horrific creatures in any horror movie.
