Horror comes in all shapes and sizes and encompasses all manner of subgenres. It may seem silly now, but once upon a time, people were terrified of classic monster movies like Frankenstein, The Mummy, and Dracula.

Castlevania takes those classics, throws them all into one game, and asks you to kill them all with a swanky leather whip. It may not spook with its concept nowadays, but what it lacks in visual scares, it more than makes up for with its difficulty. Few enemies evoke that sense of true terror like flying Medusa heads and hopping Flea Men.

If that wasn’t enough, it also comes with striking visuals that utilize a dual-world perspective system that also messes with puzzles, progression, and gameplay.

6 The Persistence

Melding genres is a pretty reliable way of delivering a unique experience. The Persistence takes first-person horror, like SOMA, and smooshes it with the procedural generation and perma-death of roguelikes.

Horror games can be scary enough with save points and respawning, but when death is permanent and every enemy could be your doom, it hits different. Originally crafted for PSVR, the PS5 port comes with a few oddities that haven’t quite made the transition to standard reality. That can be forgiven when the core experience is as satisfying and nerve-wracking as this.

Oh, and let’s not forget the endless crossovers. Where else can you have Jill Valentine running away from that guy from Halloween as the old bloke from Left 4 Dead jiggles about on a meathook?

4 Doki Doki Literature Club

Don’t let the name fool you, Doki Doki Literature Club is quite the brain bender. Being a visual novel, going into detail as to what makes it such a good horror game would ruin the whole thing.

That being said, just know that Doki Doki Literature Club is one of the best reading experiences one can have on their PS5. Defying tropes and messing with your expectations is the name of the game here. It takes a while to get going, but once it does, oh boy does it get going.

3 Amnesia Collection

Few games can stand tall and proclaim they brought about a new age of horror. Let’s be honest, it’s mostly just Resident Evil and, well, Amnesia.

Amnesia pioneered the first person, defenseless horror subgenre, and it nailed it the first time. Unbeatable enemies, a creepy atmosphere and juxtaposed stealth and sanity system result in constant tension and bouts of genuine panic. Despite its age, Amnesia still looks great and is one of the finest horror experiences around.

It took 35 years, but Alien: Isolation finally wrote a heartfelt love letter to Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic, Alien. Steeped in retro-futurism synonymous with the franchise and nostalgic throwbacks that will please nearly all fans, Alien Isolation stands alone in the annals of movie tie-in history.

As gorgeous as the world may be, the eponymous alien is the true star of the show. Unkillable, relentless, and smarter than your average Xenomorph, this creature will find you no matter where you run or hide. It’s a bit on the lengthy side, but it’s easily one of the best horror games ever.

1 Resident Evil Village

Resident Evil Village is a love letter to all things horror. It takes a little of everything and spreads it evenly across the entire experience. It has classic monster horror, horrifying stealth sequences, and so much more.

There’s something for everyone, and it pulls it all off exceedingly well. The gameplay is also top-notch, with a special shoutout to the titular village, which is jam-packed with puzzles to solve and things to find. It plays a little bit like a first-person Resident Evil 4, but it absolutely stands on its own two feet.
