The word Disney doesn’t exactly strike fear into one’s heart. The thought of Disney typically sends rainbows, magical animals, and singing princesses into audiences’ minds. Yet, there are times when the happiest place and industry on earth can be scary.

Since it’s launch last year, Disney Plus has collected a massive library of films, movies that, although mostly meant to be feel-good features, there’s a select few that can be on the scary or Halloween side, making Disney Plus a surprisingly great place to look for Halloween, fall-centric films, and perhaps a few hidden gems among the well-known blockbusters to set the mood for the spooky season.

10 Zombies (2018) (6.3)

Leave it to Disney to make anything a musical. While Disney doesn’t have a reputation for creating scores of horror or Halloween tales, they have a knack for taking something like zombies and turning them into a musical.

Zombies is exactly that: a story about a society where the undead and humans live in a divided society and an undead boy and girl end up falling in love. While full of more musical numbers than scary moments, Zombies does manage to be a somewhat enjoyable flick for All Hallows Eve.

9 The Black Cauldron (1985) (6.4)

Sometimes, a film can go too far. It happens in more media than one would think, with certain ideas and story details becoming too dark or twisted instead of achieving the overall goal. Surprisingly enough, Disney has gone too far a few occasions, one being The Black Cauldron.

Upon its release among other mixed animated movies from the ’80s, The Black Cauldron, a fantasy adventure flick was said to send children running from theatres in terror. Filled with grotesque and gruesome imagry, The Black Cauldron becomes more than a worthy film for the Halloween season.

8 The Scream Team (2002) (6.7)

Over the years, movies are able to gain followings, legacies. Whether it be due to a single scene or cast of characters, a film can usually live forever among audiences. Yet, there are some moments when a film can become forgotten.

No matter the reason, films do end up fading into the background forever, such as The Scream Team, one of many forgettable Disney Channel Original’s that followed a group of children encountering ghosts. While somewhat of a weak story, the film is still entertaining enough for the spooky season.

7 Halloweentown (1998) (6.8)

Just about every child has a moment where they wonder if classic monsters such as vampires, werewolves, and even witches live among one another. There has been plenty of theories, short stories, and fan fiction and in 1998, Disney decided to add to the collection.

Halloweentown takes the idea that many have thought about, about creatures coexisting among one another, and executes it in a Disney channel classic that captivated many young viewers and spawned a franchise of sequels that continued the adventures that expand upon the already rich world.

6 Frankenweenie (2012) (6.9)

Homages have helped to build Hollywood into the powerhouse it is today. Whether it be a tribute to a certain film or a character named after an influential figure, homages have inspired and influenced many a filmmaker to create a new idea that honors the old.

Frankenweenie, an animated film remake, takes the classic story of Frankensteins monsters and adds a canine twist into the mix. Practically bursting with callbacks and nods to the original Frankenstein, Frankenweenie shines through on many levels for the horror season and became one of the best stop motion movies of the last decade.

5 Hocus Pocus (1993) (6.9)

Thoughts of Halloween and the fall season usually bring to mind thoughts of any number of monsters, but chief among them tend to be the magical weirdos known as witches. Over the centuries, the myth and legend of witches have spread into cinema.

Hocus Pocus, a supernatural tale of three witches battling a group of children practically embodies(for the most part) the legend of witches. With some great performances leading the way and a cult following helping it along, Hocus Pocus spreads magic into the fall season, with a sequel coming soon to Disney Plus sure to spread the magic even further.

4 The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr.Toad (1949) (7.0)

What’s better than one film? Sounds like the start of a math problem but in reality, it’s the opening to a really dumb answer: two. Two films for the price of one is always better and with The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr.Toad, that’s what fans get.

Although the tale of Mr.Toad isn’t a story fit for Halloween, the story of Ichabod Crane and the legend of Sleepy Hollow is, with the merciless Headless Horseman hunting down the timid Ichabod in a film fit for the spooky season.

3 Mr. Boogedy (1986) (7.2)

Every once and a while, a film will gain far more reputation after being released. While other films can fail and fall apart after receiving poor reviews or receptions, sometimes the film can gain a resurgence after the film’s release and gain a cult following.

Such was the result of the movie Mr.Boogedy. Following a family being haunted by ghosts after moving to a new town Mr.Boogedy was an incredibly short Disney Original, 45 minutes in length that, nonetheless, gained audiences favor after being added to Disney Plus.

2 Monsters, Inc. (2001) (8.0)

Whenever the idea of monsters enter audiences’ minds, they usually conjure up thoughts of creatures hiding in their closet, waiting to jump out and tear them to pieces. Usually, they don’t think of the monsters just trying to do a job and make minimum wage.

Although not your typical Halloween style story, Monsters, Inc. is a great twist on an otherwise overdone tale, with monsters and humans being seen in different likes that invokes the right amount of spooks and scares to make this unique story work.

1 The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) (8.0)

There always seems to be some kind of debate surrounding the concept of holidays, specifically with films. Far too many times, audiences argue over which film represents the time the most, and sometimes, the argument can go one way or the other.

With The Nightmare Before Christmas, the debate is whether one of the best stop motion films of all time can be considered a Halloween film or Christmas movie. While the debate may remain ongoing, Nightmare Before Christmas is still an excellent, musical, horror feature for the fall season.
