The themes tend to subtly educate kids on the ways of the world, with the messages sent via colorful and quirky characters. Adults may feel that there is little value in watching such films, considering they’re past that impressionable stage of their lives and can generally see right through the themes in kids’ films.

10 The Lion King (1994)

On his own in the wild, the cub learns many valuable life lessons as he grows up to be a courageous young lion, ultimately resulting in his return home, where he confronts his past.

9 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

One of Steven Spielberg’s most beloved sci-fi films, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial tells the story of a boy who befriends a stranded alien, as he takes the alien, dubbed E.T., into his home while keeping his identity a secret. Soon enough the government finds out about the alien, sending the boy and his new best friend on an adventure to find E.T. a way back home.

8 Hugo (2011)

Spielberg’s buddy and colleague, Martin Scorsese, who’s best known for producing extremely adult-themed movies tries his hand at filmmaking for a younger audience with 2011’s Hugo. It follows the journey of an orphan boy who sets out on an adventure to unravel the mystery surrounding his late father, with a mechanical doll his only clue.

It’s obvious that Scorsese took a page out of his friend Spielberg’s handbook with Hugo, as it exhibits a lot of the same themes and tones found in many of Spielberg’s films. Hugo features mystery, adventure, drama, and fantasy in abundance, making it a perfect kids film for adults to get absorbed in. There’s even a bit of a history lesson in it for film fans.

7 Brave (2012)

Set during medieval times in the Scottish Highlands, the Pixar animation Brave follows a defiant Princess on a journey of self-discovery. After a curse is placed on the Queen, turning her into a bear, the Princess must use her bravery and expert archery skills in order to break the spell.

The film’s main character’s defiance of family and tradition is something that many parents may have to deal with at some point in their children’s lives, making the film an-almost cathartic experience for adults with kids. The themes serve as a reminder to parents to not be overly critical of their kids’ life choices and allow them the free will to find their own path.

6 Toy Story 3 (2010)

The all-time classic, Home Alone, follows a boy who is accidentally forgotten in his enormous home while his family has flown off to Paris for Christmas vacation. Hilarity ensues when a pair of burglars attempt to rob his house but succumb to the clever booby-traps the boy has waiting for them.

The thing that makes Home Alone so appealing to adults is its humor. It harks back to a style of slapstick comedy that older audiences may have grown up watching – a style that never gets old.
