The Lord Of The Rings trilogy is rich with amazing characters, from heroes who will fight till the bitter end, to detestable villains that people love to hate. The movies have curious creatures, humans, elves, and everything in between, all of which come together to make this one of the best fantasy franchises Hollywood ever produced.

With so many characters, some of which only appear in one movie, and others that enjoy the entire journey, everybody has their own favorite. But there is a distinct set of characters that clearly stand above the rest, making the biggest impact, bringing the most action, heart, and drama to the trilogy.

10 Saruman

While he might be one of the villains within The Lord Of The Rings, Saurman is still one of the greatest characters overall. The wizard is intelligent, powerful, and cunning, and every great story needs a terrific villain to be in charge, which is exactly what he brings.

The performance by Christopher Lee is fantastic throughout, bringing a real feeling of menace to the character. He is memorable and someone who fans still talk about after the movies are over, which is the sign of a great character.

9 Éowyn

One element where The Lord Of The Rings franchise falls short is female characters, as there aren’t many at all. However, Éowyn is one of the few to appear, and she makes her mark on the story as one of the bravest and most inspiring characters.

She wants to fight in the war, just like all of the men, which is one of the most exciting storylines throughout the movies. Éowyn proves herself as a strong fighter as well when she gets the chance, and her character is one that is just very easy to like.

8 Pippin & Merry

These can’t really be separate, as Pippin and Merry really are a double act in The Lord Of The Rings. They have an amazing bromance together that stays strong throughout everything, and while they do end up on separate journeys at some points within the franchise, they always land back together.

They’re both hilarious characters, particularly when they’re together, but they can also be emotional, open, and honest too. While they might be small in size, they will fight against anybody that gets in their way, overcoming every obstacle they find which makes them such great characters.

7 Frodo Baggins

Frodo Baggins is the one who has to carry the burden of the One Ring throughout the trilogy, being the character that is tasked with destroying it. Over the course of the journey, the weight of the situation does become too much for him to deal with, but he still soldiers on, no matter the pain he endures.

Frodo shows great courage as the ultimate underdog within this franchise, and he is happy to fight against anybody, no matter the size or strength difference. Frodo is one of the bravest characters in these movies, and his ability to persevere is truly extraordinary.

6 Gimli

Gimli is the complete opposite of Frodo because he is more than comfortable fighting and battling against anybody, with this being his main strength. Gimli might not enjoy the constant running and walking, but his friendship with Legolas is one of the greatest within the franchise.

Their back and forth is a joy to watch as Gimli begins to understand and accept other people, no matter what. Gimli also brings a lot of comedy to the franchise, being one of the funniest characters, which does help him stand out.

5 Samwise Gamgee

Out of all the Hobbits in The Lord Of The Rings, Samwise Gamgee truly stands out as the greatest. He might not be the wisest or the strongest character in the movie, but what he does bring is heart. Sam is a hero in the truest sense of the word, giving passion and dedication to everything he does, with his love for Frodo being clear throughout.

He’s arguably the most trustworthy character in the franchise, and even when he’s not sure what’s going on, Sam still fights and gives his all. The character also brings some much-needed humor at times too, which lightens up what is quite a dark trilogy.

4 Gollum

The motion-capture performance from Andy Serkis alone makes the character of Gollum one of the greatest within this trilogy. While he is technically a villain, Gollum is a misunderstood creature who is easy to sympathize with due to the amount of emotional trauma and anguish he has to sustain.

Gollum plays a key part in the story, which makes him one of the most important elements of the movies. But because Andy played him so well, infusing tons of personality into him with his speech and movements, Gollum becomes a favorite for many.

3 Gandalf

The wisest member of the Fellowship, and also one of the kindest, Gandalf is a fantastic character who brings heart and humor to the movies. He is somebody that all of the other heroes look up to and respect and he does relish his role as a leader.

Gandalf is easy to like as a viewer, simply because he is so intelligent happy to help everybody. He sacrifices himself when needed, only to return stronger, with Gandalf being a true driving force throughout each of the movies.

2 Legolas

There’s something about Legolas that oozes cool. The way he operates throughout the movies makes him stand out as one of the strongest characters, from taking down his enemies while on an elephant to sliding down a shield while shooting arrows at orcs, Legolas makes it all look easy.

He’s one of the core members of the Fellowship, and someone who plays a great role throughout the three movies. Legolas is kind and has plenty of heart as well, which all helps his character be one of the most memorable within the franchise.

1 Aragorn

While the movies are supposedly meant to be based around Frodo, and the journey that he goes on from The Shire to Mordor, by the end it does feel like Aragorn is the true lead character. Starting out as a quiet lone ranger, he adapts to being in a team and truly embraces who he is meant to be.

Aragorn is involved in the heart of all the action throughout the franchise, being one of the best fighters in the movies. But he also showcases a range of emotions, with lots of heart, getting a romantic storyline as well, which makes him the most well-rounded character of all.
