Mortal Kombat (2021) has become a massive hit with fans, and it perfectly captured the tone of the Mortal Kombat video game series, but there was a lot of fan-favorite characters left unused. And given the scope of how many characters there are in the video game series, all of whom are completely different from one another, developing the sequel can only be equally stressful and a sandbox of fun.

Considering that there wasn’t actually a Mortal Kombat tournament in the new movie, it’d be a totally missed opportunity if Warner Bros. didn’t greenlight a sequel. Fans are already drooling with excitement at the different possibilities of who will go head-to-head in the arenas, and there’s a ton of opponents who should make an appearance.

10 Johnny Cage

Johnny Cage is the most obvious answer, as the movie star is by far the biggest fan-favorite character in the series thanks to his Deadpool-like fourth wall-breaking vulgar commentaries.

However, Cage isn’t just a character that fans want to see, but it’s all but confirmed, as the final shot of the 2021 film is of a movie poster starring the character, hinting at his appearance in the sequel. His face in the poster wasn’t revealed, so it has led to loads of speculation over who should play the character, and there are even some famous people who have thrown their hat in the ring.

9 Nightwolf

Along with Johnny Cage, Nightwolf was referenced in the movie too, only in a much more low-key way. When Cole Young first enters Sonya Blade’s house in the movie, there are paper clippings covering a whole wall, and one of them is an image of Nightwolf.

The character is a Native American shaman, and he has become one of the most prolific Native American characters in video games. And though he has mostly been a supporting character, he was the protagonist of Aftermath, an expansion pack for Mortal Kombat 11.

8 Shao Khan

Though he appeared in 1998’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, it was the worst fight scene in the movie series, and that’s why fans need to see a proper depiction of Shao Kahn.

Shao Kahn is yet another character who was referenced in the 2021 movie. In Raiden’s temple, the characters walk past a giant mural, and Kahn can be seen tearing people apart. He wields an enormous hammer, is one of the Outworld villains, and he’s clearly one of the most powerful opponents of the series, as he was the final boss in Mortal Kombat II. If a sequel is greenlit, a proper fight between Shao Khan and Liu Kang needs to happen.

7 Stryker

Stryker isn’t actually the most popular character in the video game series, as he sits somewhere between the most beloved and the most obscure characters. But a small minority believe that he should have been the main character in the first movie.

And given how most fans weren’t impressed with lead character Cole Young, who wasn’t in the video game and was created specifically for the movie, Stryker being the lead isn’t a bad idea. The character doesn’t have much of a move-set and he doesn’t have many weapons, but his everyday, average guy persona would be great to see in an actual tournament.

6 Sheeva

Sheeva is one of the most exciting characters to come from Outworld, as she is presumed to be half human and half dragon, and just like Goro, she has four arms. And just like Goro, she is a fellow Shokan warrior.

As Cole Young slaughtered Goro in Mortal Kombat, literally leaving the character with his intestines spilling out of his stomach, it’d be easy to introduce Sheeva in MK2, as she could try to avenge Goro’s death. And though Sheeva isn’t a strong as Goro, she does have an incredible move-set.

5 Erron Black

The MVP of 2021’s Mortal Kombat was easily Kano, the foul-mouthed Australian, but as he kicked the bucket, it’s unlikely that he’ll return for a sequel. That leaves a big Kano-shaped hole in the series, and the best character to replace him is Erron Black, as he has just as much of a love for firearms and violence.

And just like Kano, he’s a glory seeker, constantly switching sides depending on who is winning. They were even a part of the same clan of Mercenaries, the Black Dragon.

4 Ashrah

Though she looks like an elegant young woman, that couldn’t be further from the truth, as Ashrah is a demon from the Netherrealm. She was one of the later characters to be introduced into the series, as her first feature was in the 2004 game Mortal Kombat: Deception.

But ever since she was introduced, she has been a fan favorite and has some fascinatingly weird story arcs. Ashrah is something of an anti-hero, as she constantly jumps back and forth between good and evil, and it’d be great to see her manipulate the Earthrealm opponents in her human form.

3 Kitana

Just like Kung Lao’s razor edge hat or Jax’s metal arms, Kitana has a fascinating weapon, which is a steel fan, and it makes for some of the most outrageous fatalities.

On top of her ridiculous combat skill and fatalities, what makes Kitana so interesting is that she’s over 10,000 years old, so she’s seen a ton of MK tournaments. She also finds herself in a relationship with Liu Kang, and though romance is the last thing fans think of when it comes to Mortal Kombat, a little romance in even the most violent of movies never hurt anybody.

2 Kotal Khan

Being the former emperor of the Outworld, Kotal Khan had completely different priorities to anyone who came before or after him. Most interestingly, Kotal never held any animosity to the Earthrealm.

As Shang Tsung is overseeing the Outworld in the movie and is trying to eliminate all of Earthrealm’s MK opponents before the tournament begins, Kotal Khan could be introduced in Mortal Kombat 2 as a double agent of Mortal Kombat and help the humans.

1 Shinnock

Though Sub-Zero and Shang Tsung are by far the most famous antagonists in the series, and even Scorpion was a villain before the 2021 movie, there is one arguably more powerful than all of them put together. Shinnock is basically like the Thanos of the Mortal Kombat universe, and he even holds the Amulet of Shinnock, which is essentially the Infinity Gauntlet too. On top of that, the villain has some of the most bone-crushing fatalities in the series.

Shinnock doesn’t need to appear in the second movie, as Shang Tsung will clearly be the main antagonist. But seeing as how Warner Bros. is trying to build a franchise out of the video game series, Shinnock could be hinted at and introduced in movies down the line, building to an Endgame-like climax for the Mortal Kombat series. Fans can dream.
