10 Comedians We Can’t Believe Have Never Hosted SNL

Hosting SNL (Saturday Night Live) is always an honor, but not every comedian has had the chance to host. These people should be considered.

There are so many different famous names attached to the topic of “people who have never hosted Saturday Night Live.” From television staples like Lauren Graham and Jenna Fischer to A-list movie stars like Brad Pitt and Meryl Streep, SNL may be a clear sign of a celebrity “making it,” but there’s no guarantee that every actor will be as game to have fun as Tom Hanks and Drew Barrymore.

There are many stellar comedians who have probably just never been asked to host. There are far more than just ten, but this group is composed of comedians who would make for stellar hosts in the future.

10 Jason Mantzoukas

It is long overdue for SNL to dip into the alt-comedy territory of podcasts, Earwolf, and the Comedy Bang Bang coaching tree. There may be no better, more high-energy guest for such a task than Jason Mantzoukas, a regular in Mike Schur comedies and co-host of How Did This Get Made?

Mantzoukas would bring pizzazz and a high-octane persona to the show that can often feel like it needs a shot of adrenaline. Plus, it could be a good opportunity for some of his buddies to turn up, like Scott Aukerman and Ben Schwartz. An episode with Zouks at the helm is what the people need.

9 Jenny Slate

The original tenure of Jenny Slate on SNL is one that has become vastly underrated, thanks in large part to most critics’ focus on her inadvertent use of an obscene word. It’s long past due to make good on all that Slate could’ve brought to SNL.

Fortunately, her star has burned brightly in other realms, especially indie films like Obvious Child. Her 2019 stand-up special also helped prove that a Jenny Slate monologue on SNL would be up there with some of the best, like Dave Chappelle and John Mulaney.

8 Demi Adejuyigbe

Demi Adejuyigbe is no stranger to NBC comedy. He currently writes for The Amber Ruffin Show and once wrote for The Good Place, as well. Beyond that, Adejuyigbe has built a name for himself as a stellar live comedian and a top-notch Internet talent.

It would be so fun to see Demi on the SNL stage. It’s surprising that the sketch show didn’t dip into more unconventional names during the year of the pandemic, considering how many stars were reluctant to quarantine for the length of time it takes to host. But Demi would be a great host at any time.

7 J.B. Smoove

10 Comedians We Cant Believe Have Never Hosted SNL

J.B. Smoove has bounced around the SNL ecosystem before, but never as a host. Clearly, this is an egregious mistake. Whether it’s as a realtor in We Bought a Zoo, a teacher in Spider-Man: Far From Home, or the breakout supporting character of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Smoove is a scene stealer and a team player.

It’s a tricky balance to strike, but Smoove has built a career on it. It’s the kind of dynamic that makes for a perfect SNL hosting gig. It’s a wonder that he hasn’t taken the reins yet.

6 Ali Wong

Oftentimes, celebrities born from the pure route of stand-up comedy make for killer SNL hosts because they nail the monologue and the other sketches never ask for too much acting.

Always Be My Maybe star Wong, however, has more than proven herself to be a capable performer, in addition a hilarious stand-up act. She’s so talented and wickedly funny that she might even make for a quality season premiere host.

5 Will Forte

10 Comedians We Cant Believe Have Never Hosted SNL

Returning to a comedian who used to be a cast member, it’s shocking that Will Forte has not yet hosted SNL, especially when considering that he’s been off the show for a decade.

In that time, Forte has starred on The Last Man on Earth and in A Futile and Stupid Gesture, but it’s apparently never been enough for him to come back to 30 Rock (unless he’s anchoring “Second Chance Theater” with Seth Meyers on Late Night). Perhaps the forthcoming MacGruber series is the perfect opportunity to invite him back with a character reprise in tow.

4 Jason Sudeikis

10 Comedians We Cant Believe Have Never Hosted SNL

Speaking of Forte, his close comedic collaborator and former Last Man co-star Jason Sudeikis would be an even more perfect choice to host SNL. Sudeikis was a premier cast member of the mid-2000s era of SNL, bringing out a number of famous characters and political impressions.

Since Sudeikis left, he’s returned a couple times as Joe Biden. But the fact that Ted Lasso has vaulted him into the status of Golden Globe-winning actor should make for an ideal choice this fall, when the second season of Ted Lasso is in full swing nd he’s not filming the third in London, of course.

3 Jessica McKenna

These days, much of the great live comedy (ranging from stand-up to improv) is found in the realm of podcasting. Over the years, Comedy Bang Bang’s Scott Aukerman has given a platform to many stellar comedians. Jessica McKenna is one such brilliant live comedian and improv talent to stem from the show.

Considering SNL now employs Ego Nwodim, it’s clear that they’re open to CBB regulars. Having starred on Party Over Here and originating from the UCB Theatre, McKenna is prime SNL talent, but it’s absurd that they haven’t enlisted her yet.

2 Gabriel Gundacker

10 Comedians We Cant Believe Have Never Hosted SNL

Gabriel Gundacker is one of the best young comedians working today. Known for his live performances and his Internet presence (including “Zendaya Is Meechee” and new Wii Sports music), Gundacker is a multi-hyphenate who could also serve as the musical guest if he hosts SNL.

It’s honestly quite surprising SNL hasn’t dipped into the Gundacker well yet. They’ve embraced Internet comedians like Good Neighbor and BriTANick in the past and Gundacker was hip to the younger generation through Vine. He could open up new avenues for the show.

1 Mindy Kaling

Adam Scott, Kristen Bell, Ali Wong; all of these comedians would be great SNL hosts and it’s truly unbelievable that none of them have hosted. But the most surprising non-host is Mindy Kaling. The world may never be at peace until Mindy heads to 30 Rock.

In her various books of essays, Kaling has remarked upon her stint guest writing on SNL. And she did cameo in a “What Up with That?” segment. But it’s not enough. SNL needs the full Mindy Kaling treatment because she’s truly in the pantheon of twenty-first century comedians. Why bother with Elon Musk when Mindy is right there?
