As we look to the stars and imagine the various kinds of life that could exist in the universe, we’re left to wonder what form any kind of encounter with an alien species might take. We’ve seen peaceful family-friendly alien encounters on the big screen, but most of the time the aliens are more deadly than friendly.

For every E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind in sci-fi, there are a dozen more cinematic alien encounters that went the other way and didn’t come in peace. So today we are going to take a closer look at a few of the deadliest encounters with alien species that we’ve seen on the big screen.

10 DISTRICT 9

We wanted to include Neill Blomkamp’s 2009 District 9 to highlight the fact that humanity isn’t always the victim in these encounters. The film takes place in Johannesburg in South Africa, where an alien ship full of sick and injured aliens that become derogatorily known as Prawns.

The aliens are segregated and forced to live in harsh conditions while an abusive human military forces them to relocate. They are even experimented on by weapons designers looking to reverse-engineer their technology. District 9 is a bleak and depressing look at ourselves and how we can be just as deadly to aliens as they could be to us, or we are to ourselves.

9 LIFE

2017’s Life took place on the International Space Station as a team of astronauts excitedly examined the first documented sign of extraterrestrial life found on Mars. Unfortunately, the alien lifeform that they reawaken (which is cutely named Calvin by a PR campaign) quickly grew and began to adapt to its environment.

Calvin would begin to take out the crew one by one as they attempted to kill it before it contaminated the station. The real danger from Calvin comes from the threat left hanging in the twist ending as it touches down on Earth and presumably begins to spread uncontrollably.

8 ALIENS

While the first encounter with the Xenomorph monsters in Alien could go down as one of the most terrifying alien encounters seen on the big screen, it wasn’t until the 1986 sequel Aliens that we really got to see what the monstrous creatures could do to a population of people.

Years after the alien was first picked up by the Nostromo, a mining settlement was established on the planet that would eventually be completely wiped out by the Xenomorphs, giving fans a look at what could happen if the deadly aliens ever touched down on Earth.

7 THE BLOB

The 1958 sci-fi horror classic The Blob has been remade a couple of times over the years, with each iteration of the film upgrading the threat level of the titular alien monster that arrived on Earth aboard a falling meteorite.

The 1988 remake especially focuses on the deadliness of the corrosive Blob as it tears apart a town full of people, growing larger and glowing more vibrant with each new body consumed. The Blob’s threat remains high as it doesn’t seem to be able to be killed, only temporarily stopped by freezing it.

6 MARS ATTACKS!

Tim Burton brought his live-action adaptation of the 60s cult hit trading card set Mars Attacks! to the big screen in 1996 which featured Earth’s first encounter with little green men in flying saucers, hailing from the planet Mars. The United States Military was the first to attempt peaceful contact with the visitors, though the Martians’ true nature was quickly revealed.

Much like the more dramatic War of the Worlds, the hyper-sexual blood-thirsty Martians of Mars Attacks! used their superior technology and torturous experiments to quickly and violently eradicate a large chunk of humanity before their weakness to high-pitched frequencies was discovered.

5 INDEPENDENCE DAY

Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day also released into theaters in 1996 and also featured humanity’s first real contact with an alien race, though the incredible size of the invading fleet of ships that settled over the major cities of Earth set a much more ominous tone in the film.

These ships soon revealed their destructive power when they unleashed an energy weapon that decimated the cities of Earth, wiping out millions of people and taking out a good chunk of the planet’s military forces with a set of co-ordinated follow-up strikes, If it wasn’t for humanity’s frightening skills with computer viruses, Earth would have fallen quickly.

4 STARSHIP TROOPERS

1997’s Starship Troopers is an adaptation of sci-fi author Robert A. Heinlein’s novel of the same name, though director Paul Verhoeven put his unique spin and satirized the story of a heavily militarized Earth engaged in a war with an extraterrestrial species known as Arachnids, or more commonly, Bugs.

The film is another example of humanity as the dangerous invaders, as while the Bugs certainly racked up a huge kill count of both military and civilians during the war, it was the military complex of the future Earth government that were the clear instigators of the fight.

3 EDGE OF TOMORROW

While it may be better known to some as Lve Die Repeat, 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow was Doug Liman’s adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s All You Need Is Kill and focused on a planetary military force fighting against a hostile invasion by aliens known as Mimics.

The film follows Tom Cruise’s Major William Cage as he is caught in a time loop that repeats the day every time he dies, though his memories remain. This ability comes from the aliens, who use their manipulation of time to conquer planets across the universe. Cage’s use of their own ability against them saved the war-ravaged Earth, which was set to lose the war against the Mimics.

2 A QUIET PLACE

2018’s A Quiet Place from director John Krasinksi took place on a world already devastated by vicious alien creatures that are incredibly fast and able to sense the quietest sound. While the actual takeover of the planet wasn’t covered much in the film, it’s clear that Earth wasn’t able to put up much of a defense against the aliens.

Humanity eventually discovers a weapon to use against the heavily armored aliens when a deaf girl and her family are able to use extremely high frequencies caused by a damaged hearing aid to hurt the aliens, though the widespread use of the new weapon hasn’t been seen, leaving the alien creatures in control of the hauntingly silent planet Earth.

1 BATTLEFIELD EARTH

To clarify, we aren’t discussing the best alien encounters here, which is why the awful 2000 adaptation of L. Ron Hubbard’s Battlefield Earth is even being mentioned. The film takes place 1,000 years after the invasion of the bestial aliens known as the Psychlos and the devastating fall of the human race.

Modern society was apparently no match for the technologically-advanced aliens as the film revealed that humanity fell after only nine minutes into the invasion. The remainder of humanity worked as a slave force mining gold for the alien conquerors, though a ragtag bunch of humans managed to defeat the aliens and destroy their home planet.
