Thanks to the folks at Marvel, post-credit scenes have become expected in all Hollywood blockbusters. In the age of sequels and shared universes, these brief extra moments of footage can be used to hint at what new adventure awaits audiences in the future. Of course, some are just there to give one last laugh to the audience.
Even before the days of the MCU, post-credit scenes were around and they were often comedic. While it’s always exciting to get a brief tease at what’s next, there are some hilarious extra scenes that are well worth sticking around through all the credits to see.
10 Lethal Weapon 3 (1992)
For many fans of the Lethal Weapon franchise, the third installment is seen as the weakest. It seemed to mark the moment the franchise started to become more of a comedy than an action movie, but at least some of the jokes worked well.
The movie begins with Riggs and Murtagh investigating a bomb in a building that they accidentally trigger, destroying the building and getting themselves demoted. The post-credit scene finds them pulling up to a building to check things out. When the building immediately explodes, they drive away with Riggs, insisting no one saw them.
9 Guardians Of The Galaxy (2014)
The cosmic side of the MCU was introduced with Guardians of the Galaxy. The movie introduced the new batch of dysfunctional intergalactic heroes and made wonderful use of James Gunn’s irreverent sense of humor.
While the post-credit scenes could have focused on Thanos or further expanded the universe, it’s not surprising that Gunn just wanted to continue the fun. The scene finds the newly sprouted Baby Groot adorably dancing to the Jackson 5, only to freeze whenever Drax looks at him.
8 Ted 2 (2015)
Seth MacFarlane’s sequel to his hit comedy Ted was not as well-regarded as the original. But with the outlandish humor and fun cameos, there were a few funny moments.
One of the funniest and most random scenes has Liam Neeson playing a very serious customer at the grocery store looking to buy a box of Trix cereal, even though “Trix are for kids.” He is very intense, ensuring there will be no trouble if he buys the cereal. The post-credit scene finds Neeson returning to the store, bloodied and bruised, where he begrudgingly returns the cereal.
7 Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)
The classic 80s comedy Ferries Bueller’s Day Off features Matthew Broderick as the fourth-wall-breaking hero, a high schooler who fakes being ill so he can have an epic day away from school.
After Ferris takes audiences on such a wild and fun ride, it makes sense they would want to stick around and see if there is more. But when the end of the credits, Ferris appears asking them why they are still here and telling them it’s time to leave.
6 Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
One of the most entertaining aspects of the MCU’s version of Spider-Man is the high school tropes they have fun with. This includes a hilarious running gag featuring videos of Captain America giving helpful PSAs on subjects ranging from physical fitness and detention.
While fans have learned to always stick around after the credits for something good, Marvel has a little fun with them this time. Cap appears once again, this time to talk about the virtue of patience and how waiting around for something can sometimes lead to a disappointing payoff. Touché Marvel.
5 22 Jump Street (2014)
After the surprise success of 21 Jump Street, the sequel 22 Jump Street had a lot of fun making meta-commentary on the whole concept of Hollywood sequels. There are a lot of funny jokes about bigger budgets and doing the same plot over again. But the best part comes with the closing credits.
As the credits play, we see the future of the franchise, which spins wildly out of control with countless sequels and spinoffs. This includes movies set in culinary school, an animated cartoon, and one sequel in which Jonah Hill is replaced with Seth Rogen.
4 The Avengers (2012)
Phase 1 of the MCU was all about setting the stage for the big team-up movie, The Avengers. Each previous movie used their post-credit scenes to add another piece to the puzzle and further connect these movies. However, by the time The Avengers came along, they decided they could have a bit of fun.
After the massive Battle of New York is over and Loki’s army is defeated, the final scene finds the exhausted heroes enjoying a post-battle snack at a shawarma restaurant. There is no dialogue as we just watch these iconic heroes eat in silence.
3 Deadpool 2 (2018)
The character of Deadpool introduced a new kind of hero who could talk to the audience and poke fun at the superhero genre while being in the middle of it. Deadpool 2 continued this aspect of the character, featuring plenty of meta-humor throughout the sequel.
The movie saved the biggest laughs for the end credits when Deadpool gets a hold of a time travel device and goes back to correct past mistakes. While this includes saving the love of his life from being killed, it also means killing the X-Men Origins: Wolverine version of Deadpool and killing Ryan Reynolds before he could make Green Lantern.
2 Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)
Austin Powers is perhaps Mike Myers’ most iconic role, but fans might forget that fellow funnyman Will Ferrell also appeared in the first Austin Powers movie and its sequel. He plays Mustafa, a hired assassin trying to kill Powers.
In the sequel, Mustafa has a brief encounter with Powers before falling off a cliff. He is then heard saying he is not dead but very badly injured and needs help. Mustafa is not heard from again for the rest of the movie until the post-credit scene where he is heard still struggling to stand and wondering if help is coming.
1 Airplane! (1980)
The parody movie Airplane! is often regarded as one of the funniest movies of all time. At the beginning of the movie, disgraced pilot Ted Striker is working as a cabbie. Looking to reunite with his girlfriend, he drives to the airport, only for a passenger to hop in his cab. Ted tells the man he’ll be right back and starts the meter.
Ted eventually boards the plane and becomes involved in a mid-air emergency. Throughout the movie, we cut away a couple of times to the man still waiting in the cab with the meter continuing to run. At the end of the movie, with the day saved and the credits rolled, we check back in on the man one last time who finally says he’ll give with 20 more minutes, but that’s it.
