10 Skrrt, Skrrt

Being that Anne broke off their engagement the first time around, Wentworth carried around a bit of anger and resentment. Even when he returns from war, some negative feelings towards her lingers in his head and heart. He pays attention to her closely despite himself and still believes that she has little romantic interest in him. When he hears that she has declined a marriage proposal, he is cautiously more curious about her. But instead of sorting some of those feelings out, he engages in a host of other things, like trying to glean nuts in a close-by hedgerow.

Roses are red, your sisters’ intellect is small. Your father is subtly just as bad, and to boast about loudly, your mother has the gall. You’re great though, so marry me. That’s basically what Darcy said to Elizabeth in hopes of winning her heart. Perhaps it was his lack of experience in social interactions, or maybe he thought that it would be better to be honest about how he felt, regardless of how offensive and disrespectful it may be. It didn’t matter though, because Elizabeth rejected him swiftly and in such a satisfying manner.

Anne and Frederick didn’t even have a chance the first time around. She was too young, especially in Lady Russell’s opinion, and he didn’t have the background that would match her family’s expectations. Anne accepted his hand, but that meant nothing because her father, Sir Walter, rejected Wentworth’s plea for a marriage blessing.

Basically, he wasn’t going to sit around and let his daughter marry some no-connection-having naval officer, handsome or not. Some might call it dramatic, and some might say he was just looking out for his daughter. But however the scone crumbles, it wasn’t happening on his watch. It’s a good reason Anne got her own watch the second time around.

Mr. Wickham is only summed up by the words, “wickedly handsome.” Is he wicked? Yes, he is relatively terrible. Is he handsome? When his greed and deceitful ways aren’t shining through the almost invisible pores on his sculpted face, yes, his beauty isn’t difficult to notice. He has only highlighted his position of victim-hood to Elizabeth, which she uses as a dart to throw when rejecting Mr. Darcy’s first proposal. When she reminds him of how he supposedly treated Mr. Wickham so unfairly, that’s when the gloves come off, and he truly realizes that this proposal will not end well.

Emma: lover of love and her friends being in love with love, and don’t forget the love. She rivaled Cupid in her ways of matchmaking, and she used her knowledge of people to her advantage. It wouldn’t be strange for Emma to shout in the thrilling style of Oprah, “You get a wedding! You get an engagement! You get love!” Although she was often in other people’s affairs, she meant well and seemed like she wanted people to be happy. A few scoldings from her father were a normal occurrence, and at times strictly necessary.

Mrs. Bennett wanted her daughters to get married, and she wanted it to happen quickly in case her husband died. Her worries are understandable because at that time things were different. If you weren’t married and you didn’t have any connections, familial or otherwise, it was hard out there in those streets. She was especially worried about her two oldest daughters, that they would never marry and they would all struggle greatly.

This often meant that as long as the man had connections of any sort, he was a good match for her daughters, which is questionable at best. Elizabeth, however, didn’t show much concern as she cleverly rejected Mr. Collins and his admiration for boiled potatoes.

Anything concerning the waves of love concerned Emma, regardless of whether it was her personal experience or not. Miss Taylor and Mr. Weston? A match by yours truly. Harriet and Robert Martin? A romantic pinnacle of beauty… by the end of the story. Forget the misunderstandings and heartache! Everyone’s business is Emma’s business, even when she’s wrong. She takes joy in the possibilities of two people vaguely interested in each other. A precarious, well-intentioned character, that Emma is, but often off the mark when it comes to people’s true affections. Nonetheless, it’s all very intriguing to watch her carry on.

3 Let The Rain Fall Down by Fitzwilliam Darcy

Lizzie McGuire wasn’t the only one hoping to be under the healing shower of the pouring rain. Elizabeth’s unyielding rejection was a shock to his system, and he needed a reset. How could she say no? Her connections are minuscule and her family isn’t of great wealth. His estate is humongous and he has money to grate and use as shredded cheese if he wanted to. Perhaps mentioning her “inferiority” was too much? No that can’t be the reason, because the disparity between them is not a secret. The rain will certainly help him soothe his aching heart and his confused ego. It will swirl around his head like a gray halo and make him forget his mistakes.

2 Home Of The Fashion & Fabrics: Northanger Abbey

Literally nobody can stop me from reposting Mr Tilney memes and maybe this is too much power for one person. 😂 #janeaustenmemes #janeaustenhumour #literarymemes

The lush fabrics are so plenteous, but oh, the beauty of a good muslin! At nine shillings a yard, the intricacy of the woven cotton is something one doesn’t just walk past without admiration. In Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey world, a man knowing anything about different kinds of fabric or anything of the sort was rare. Mr. Tilney, who in fact understands muslin, is one of those rarities, soaring on the fabric-clad realm of Catherine Morland’s heart. Their introduction was nothing short of a period-appropriate meet-cute. Many thanks to Mrs. Allen and her consistent worrying about her dress. It really set things up here.

After clearing things up between them, Darcy and Elizabeth dance around each other in a ballroom full of shy pining and hope. Even after his aunt barges her way into Elizabeth’s home and insults her entire family, which seems to be a pre-requisite for anyone relating to Fitzwilliam Darcy, she still holds him close to her heart. Darcy realizes that things aren’t as bleak as they seemed a while ago when Elizabeth rejected him. Much like Bernie Sanders, he decides to ask again for a vote of confidence in him as a candidate for her hand in marriage.
