The Rise of Skywalker finally concludes both Disney’s sequel trilogy and the Skywalker saga that began back in 1977. The film’s predecessor The Last Jedi directed by Rian Johnson was lauded by critics but divided fans. With JJ back at the helm of the franchise, the film promised a satisfying and emotional sendoff to its beloved characters. Unfortunately, the film received the opposite reaction and was panned by critics yet celebrated by fans.

10 Baby Yoda vs. Babu Frik

Just a month ago the internet was going crazy over Baby Yoda’s cuteness. The Rise of Skywalker introduced Star Wars fans to a new adorable little creature, the droidsmith Babu Frik. Between the frequent “hey heyyy” and the adorably delivered “droid is ready”, Babu Frik’s small role in the film is forever immortalized within the Star Wars community.

If the last few months have proved anything, it’s that Star Wars can make seemingly old creatures adorable internet sensations. But don’t worry Baby Yoda, we still love you too.

9 Disney’s Marvel vs. Disney’s Star Wars

It seems like Disney owns everything nowadays, including two of the biggest movie franchises on the planet. Both Marvel and Lucasfilm each released a major movie billed as the “finale” in their respective sagas.

Endgame perfectly weaves the stories of 10 years of filmmaking and over 20 films. Yet, Rise of Skywalker, regardless of your opinion on the film, concluded a trilogy that was disjointed and poorly planned from the start.

8 Knights of Ren

Another Spongebob meme on the list but hilarious, nonetheless. The Knights of Ren join a seemingly growing list of Star Wars characters that look cool but ultimately are wasted in the films. The Knights of Ren have mystified fans since Rey’s dream in The Force Awakens. With a glaring absence in The Last Jedi it seemed like fans would finally see them in action in the final film since JJ was directing the franchise once again.

Although they were a heavy presence throughout the film, they literally just stood around right until the end. The scene where Ben Solo fights The Knights is definitely one of the film’s greatest moments, but The Knights of Ren were clearly wasted potential both in Rise of Skywalker and throughout the sequel trilogy.

7 Episode IX Had the Most Story

This definitely captures how most of the sequel trilogy felt. The Force Awakens had to introduce audiences to the new characters, but ultimately borrowed a lot of story elements from A New Hope. Whatever your opinion is on Last Jedi, compared to Rise of the Skywalker it was almost as if not happened in the events of the film.

Rise of the Skywalker provides a lot of non-stop exposition in the first half of the movie, so it feels like the film is making up for the narrative shortcomings of the previous two films. Labeling Last Jedi as “VIII.5” is pretty hilarious in its own right especially since The Last Jedi picks up immediately where The Force Awakens leaves off.

6 Tatooine Lightsaber Burial

The ending to Rise of the Skywalker concluded the saga at the place where it all began, Luke’s moisture farm on Tatooine. Rey buries both Leia’s lightsaber and Anakin’s/Luke’s lightsaber deep beneath the sands of Tatooine. It is a fitting ending to a lightsaber and a story that has lasted generations.

Unfortunately, this also means that Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber is buried in sand, the thing he hates the most in the universe. In Attack of the Clones, Anakin famously declares his disdain for sand to Padme. Unfortunately, in the world of Star Wars sand appears almost everywhere. Sorry Anakin, you will never be able to remove all of that sand from your lightsaber now.

5 Carrying Their Trilogies

Although most of the films in the prequel trilogy have been universally panned, Ewan McGregor’s performance as Obi-Wan Kenobi is a clear highlight of each of the three films. McGregor’s performance is so lauded that the news of his upcoming return in Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi tv series has been met with an overwhelmingly positive response.

Adam Driver’s performance as Kylo Ren in the sequel trilogy has received similar acclaim. While the reception has been mixed for the last two films, critics and fans alike can all agree that Driver’s performance is a clear standout of the trilogy.

4 Rey Who?

Rey revealing her adopted Skywalker surname might have been a satisfying moment in the film, the “Rey who?” conversation leading up to it was a bit awkward.

Thankfully, the internet has been mocking this scene, refusing to leave it alone. “Rey who?” memes have been circulating all over the internet, from poking fun at other movies to other directors including the father of Star Wars, George Lucas. The joke is simple but hilarious.

3 Snoke is Rey’s Uncle

The Rise of Skywalker revealed a lot of new information. A LOT of information. One of those reveals is that Kylo’s former master, Snoke, was actually created by Palpatine, meaning that The Emperor was the one pulling the strings this entire time.

Another big reveal in the film is that Rey is the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine and that her parents left her on Jakku to protect her. So, if Palpatine created Snoke then that somehow makes Snoke the uncle of Rey. It is all certainly a weird family relationship, but it definitely needs to be discussed.

2 Palpatine’s Plan

Aside from the amazing meme format, this meme brings to light Emperor Palpatine’s constant unoriginality in his evil plans. From building the Death Star twice, to apparently building a similar weapon known as Starkiller Base, and now his latest trick with the fleet of Star Destroyers equipped with Death Star weaponry shows that Palpatine sure loves his giant laser weapons.

Putting the super-laser on a Star Destroyer seems like it would make the weapon more mobile. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case, and the fleet was restrained to Exegol during the final battle.

1 Papa Palpatine

Now that Rey is revealed to be the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine, the burning question on everyone’s mind is when did Palpatine have a relationship and who was that person. The only thing that is known to viewers is that Palpatine’s son had a daughter and then died trying to protect her from The Emperor.

With the recent success of Disney+’s The Mandalorian, and the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi television show, it is all too possible for Palpatine to get his own show on the streaming service.
