With How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World hitting theaters, here’s a look back at the entire trilogy with some fan theories crazy enough to be true. The DreamWorks animated franchise has become one of the most beloved trilogies in recent memory, and possibly even of all-time. Each installment has received critical acclaim, but the success of the franchise has led to many ways for it to continue since How to Train Your Dragon arrived in 2010.

The first movie made nearly $500 million worldwide at the box office, and even though How to Train Your Dragon 2 didn’t arrive until 2014, interest in the franchise never wavered. The sequel made over $620M globally, but fans of the franchise were able to continue living in this world during the extended gap. The launch of an animated TV series came in 2012, while short films were also released to show more of Hiccup and Toothless’ adventures together. They even just debuted a brand new mobile game.

Despite the anticipation around the new film, there’s a sense of sadness, as it also means fans around the world have to say goodbye. This could be difficult too, thanks to the level of investment the last nine years has brought. However, this interest has also led to some major fan theories regarding the relationships and lore of this world, and the latest Screen Rant video takes a look at 10 of the craziest ones that could be true.

Hiccup’s coma is one of the more compelling theories mentioned, as it does actually make quite a lot of sense. The first film is intentionally vague on the time that passed between the climactic battle and when Hiccup finally wakes up, but it has to be longer than just a day or two. The people of Berk have already begun to implement dragons into their everyday lives and that type of change could not happen overnight.

And tied to this coma, the TV show being part of Hiccup’s dream is quite fascinating as it would explain why nothing mentioned in those episodes factor into the actual films. Of course, the easier explanation is that the films had to move past those stories because they couldn’t count on everyone who saw the sequel to know what happened in a lesser-known show. Now that How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is ready to spread its wings at the box office, the final chapter could open up new fan theories and maybe even explain some others. Either way, Drew Struzan coming out of semi-retirement to design brand new posters for the trilogy just goes to show how excited fans are to see what comes next.
