It is a good time to be a Marvel fan. With the Marvel Cinematic Universe firing on all cylinders, more and more of the comic book giant’s iconic characters are being adapted for the big and small screens with each passing year. The MCU continues to add to its wide range of comic book characters in each of its many projects, with no end in sight.

Now that the MCU has adapted many of their most iconic characters from the early Silver Age of comics, they have the opportunity to turn to later decades for their next phase of films. They will no doubt soon turn to many of the previously overlooked heroes from the 1980s, where there are plenty of characters primed to be the next fan-favorites.

Psylocke

Betsy Braddock was a supporting character to Captain Britain in the mid-to-late ’70s, but truly made comic book history when she emerged as the mutant Psylocke in 1986, later joining the X-Men team after assisting them against the supervillain Sabretooth in Uncanny X-Men #213.

An MCU version of Psylocke would not be the first live-action adaptation of the character – she made a brief appearance in X-Men: The Last Stand and had a somewhat larger role in X-Men: Apocalypse, played by Olivia Munn. Now that the film rights to the X-Men and other mutants reside with Marvel Studios, however, Psylocke may finally have the opportunity to be featured in the spotlight the way she deserves.

Speedball

Speedball is a character created by Tom DeFalco and Steve Ditko in 1988. First featured in The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #22, high schooler Robbie Baldwin gained the power to generate energy bubbles after a laboratory accident, becoming the Speedball. The character would later become an integral member of the New Warriors team, and a major player at the onset of the 2006 Civil War storyline.

With rumors circulating about various super teams that Marvel is reportedly building up, including the Young Avengers and the Thunderbolts, now is the perfect time for them to introduce the New Warriors, with Speedball at the very center. Many fans know that this team nearly saw the light of day in the form of a television series several years back, in which Calum Worthy had been cast as Baldwin. Perhaps now is the time for Marvel to revive that shelved idea.

Puma

The Puma, also known as Thomas Fireheart, is the final step in a generations-long genetic experiment by a tribe of indigenous peoples to breed the perfect warrior. Fireheart transforms into a puma-like werecat to battle evil and injustice, and has at many times had a rivalry with the Amazing Spider-Man, who dislikes his crime-fighting methods.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe specializes in making audiences care about their less popular comic book characters. While Puma never gained the popularity that certain other superheroes did, he played an intriguing role in several Spider-Man stories from the ’80s and early ’90s. Given a chance, the character may blow audiences away if introduced into the MCU.

Dazzler

Alison Blaire, a.k.a. Dazzler, is a mutant with the ability to manipulate sound waves in order to use them as weapons against her enemies. First appearing in The Uncanny X-Men #130, she has been a rather noteworthy affiliate of the titular team while also pursuing a professional music career.

With the mutants primed to make their MCU debut in the very near future, Dazzler would make an excellent addition to the universe. The character made an all-t0o-brief cameo in Dark Phoenix, played by Halston Sage, but has had no live-action roles otherwise. With Marvel’s recent casting of Harry Styles as the Eternal Eros, perhaps they are ready to dip into the well of pop star talent once more in the near future.

Firestar

Firestar is one of an elite class in comics lore that actually made her debut outside of the comic book. First appearing on the animated series Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, Angelica “Angel” Jones supported the titular team as her superhero alter ego, gaining enough popularity to be added to Marvel’s comic universe shortly thereafter.

This character would make a perfect addition to the Avengers in upcoming phases of the MCU. Her powers, which include flight, radioactive wave manipulation, energy blasts, and more, make Firestar a force to be reckoned with, capable of going against the likes of Thanos, or whichever villain the Avengers may be tasked with taking down next.

Cannonball

Created in 1982 by the legendary X-Men comics writer Chris Claremont and illustrator Bob McLeod, Cannonball was an early leading member of the New Mutants team. He has the ability to propel himself like a jet at incredible speeds, making him a powerful ally to his teammates and a dangerous enemy to any supervillain that crosses his path.

Samuel Zachary Guthrie made an appearance in Fox’s last mutant film The New Mutants in 2020, played by Charlie Heaton, but never truly realized his full potential therein, making him a perfect candidate for an MCU reboot. With Marvel Studios likely examining some peripheral mutants to usher in the age of the X-Men, Cannonball provides a fresh face to do just that.

Jubilee

Jubilee is a mutant who has often played a minor role in the X-Men team, gaining a cult following after her appearance in X-Men: The Animated Series. Since then, she has made her live-action debut in several X-Men films but these appearances never amounted to anything more than glorified cameos.

Since the previous X-Men franchises have heavily featured the classic members of the team such as Wolverine, Cyclops, and Jean Grey, Marvel Studios may opt to feature the secondary X-Men in more prominent roles in the upcoming reboot. As such, Jubilee would make an excellent addition, finally giving her the live-action adaptation that fans have been hoping to see.

Elektra

Elektra Natchios is a lethal assassin and warrior, who has been associated with both the right and wrong side of the law in her long history in comics. She is a skilled swordswoman and athlete, who is capable of holding her own against the likes of Daredevil, the Punisher, and Typhoid Mary.

Many Marvel fans will recognize Elektra from her portrayal by Jennifer Garner from the 2003 Daredevil film and the subsequent (and disastrous) Elektra solo film several years later. Though the character was rebooted for the 2015 Netflix Daredevil series, she still has yet to make an appearance in the official MCU. With rumors swirling that Netflix’s Daredevil actor Charlie Cox may return in Spider-Man: No Way Home, now is the perfect time to bring Elektra back as well.

Kitty Pryde

10 Marvel Superheroes From The ‘80s Who Should Join The MCU

Kitty Pryde, sometimes known as Shadowcat, is a popular member of the X-Men team, who is capable of making herself completely intangible, allowing her to walk through any solid structure with ease. Though her powers are far from making her an Omega-level mutant, Kitty has had several extremely powerful variants of herself in the comics that prove her worth to the team.

Many superhero film enthusiasts will remember that Kitty Pryde appeared in a number of the original X-Men films, though she was typically kept in the periphery, only gaining more screentime as the actor who played her (Elliot Page) gained in popularity. The time has come, however, for Shadowcat to be featured in the spotlight of an MCU X-Men team.

Beta Ray Bill

Beta Ray Bill is one of Marvel’s more absurd characters to come out of the ’80s. Hailing from the planet of Korbin, Beta Ray Bill is a horse-like creature that first appeared in The Mighty Thor #337. He often allies himself with the Asgardians and is even the typical user of the legendary ax Stormbreaker, which is the MCU Thor’s current weapon of choice.

Marvel fans have been yearning to get a live-action adaptation of Beta Ray Bill in the MCU for some time now, with Marvel Studios continuing to toy with the idea, featuring a noteworthy nod to his likeness in one of the giant statues that comprised the Grandmaster’s palace in Thor: Ragnarok. The character also perfectly matches director Taika Waititi’s colorfully absurd style, causing many fans to believe that his inclusion in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder is inevitable.
