Viewers just love it when an actor from a show they adore shows up in another show they also love. This is the case with many of the actors who appear in BBC’s fantasy legend Merlin and sci-fi adventure series Doctor Who. There are some actors who had small roles in one and a significant role in the other.
Actor Tom Hopper, who appeared briefly in the Doctor Who episode, “The Eleventh Hour” had a rather larger role as Percival, a knight of the round table in Merlin. Some other actors who appeared in both shows include Eve Myles, Alex Price, Joe Dempsie, Phil Davis, Lindsay Duncan, Liam Cunningham, Pauline Collins, and Trevor Sellers. But, these are the most major Merlin/Who crossover actors in the shows.
10 Angel Coulby
Angel Coulby stars as Merlin’s Guinevere and appears in all five seasons of the show. Her character is humble, honest, opinionated, sweet, and just. But, regarding her character in Doctor Who, blink and viewers just might miss her.
Angel appears in a brief scene as Lady Katherine where she is holding a conversation with Madame de Pompadour in the episode, “The Girl In The Fireplace.”
9 Georgia Tennant
Georgia Tennant’s character in Merlin appeared in the season 2 episode “Sweet Dreams,” as Lady Vivian. Arthur is placed under a spell and falls madly in love with her. The spell can only be broken by Arthur’s true love.
Georgia Tennant also appeared in an episode of Doctor Who as The Doctor’s daughter, Jenny. Jenny dies in the arms of The Doctor after taking a bullet to the chest, but is revealed to be alive after The Doctor and Donna leave, having taken on the Time Lord regeneration gene.
8 Sarah Parish
There are some episodes of Merlin that are difficult to forget. Sarah Parish appeared in a particularly memorable two-part episode as Lady Catrina, the love-interest of Uther Pendragon. But what Uther didn’t know was that Lady Catrina was a troll who had enchanted him to love her.
Parish’s role in Doctor Who is difficult to spot through the makeup and extra limbs, but with a little concentration one might notice that The Empress of the Racnoss looks and sounds familiar.
7 Colin Salmon
Colin Salmon had a role as druid Aglain in the Merlin episode “The Nightmare Begins.” As the title suggests, this was the episode that spurred the beginning of the end for Arthur Pendragon, sealing his and Merlin’s joint fate. Aglain tried to be a positive influence, telling Morgana “In time you will learn that magic isn’t a dark art that must be shrouded in secrecy. It can be a force for good.”
Salmon’s character in Doctor Who was that of Doctor Moon, an artificial intelligence mainframe for the world of the Library, and Dr. Moon was a Doctor with physical form who helped the people inside the computer.
6 Anthony Head
Both of Anthony Head’s characters in Merlin and Doctor Who were of the villainous kind. Uther Pendragon wasn’t necessarily malicious, but he wasn’t a man who made smart or unbiased decisions. He was a controlling father to Arthur but believed himself to be protecting the Kingdom and ensuring a future without magic. His own personal gain and its consequences solidified his view of magic.
Anthony Head’s Doctor Who character was Brother Lassar, a Krillitane who wanted to own the universe by cracking the Skasis Paradigm.
5 Tom Ellis
Tom Ellis was a rather unsavory character in Merlin. He was King Cenred, a coward who wanted more power and who was under the influence of Morgause, who used him for her own means.
In Doctor Who, Ellis was a brave Doctor Thomas Milligan who met Martha during the year she spent spreading The Doctor’s story across the earth. He died at the hand of The Master but returned when the year of The Master never happened.
4 Richard Wilson
A physician in one, a physician in the other. Richard Wilson performed the role of Gaius, the Court Physician, as well as Merlin’s guide in the BBC series. He fashioned long hair and robes.
His role as a physician in Doctor Who was that of Dr. Constantine. Viewers watched as he met The Ninth Doctor, explained the injuries of those in the hospital, and when he himself transformed into a masked mutant humanoid.
3 Michelle Ryan
While some might recognize Michelle Ryan for her role as High Priestess Nimueh, Merlin’s main adversary during season one of the Merlin, others would associate her with the role of a companion that never was.
Ryan appeared in the Doctor Who Easter Special, “Planet of the Dead” as Lady Christina de Souza. While The Tenth Doctor rejected her proposal as a companion, she later met The Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who comic, “The Eye of Ashaya,” who asked her to be his companion, but she declined.
2 John Hurt
What would Merlin be without the voice of The Great Dragon? The late John Hurt performed the voice acting role of Kilgharrah, the voice viewers heard during the introduction, the voice who told Merlin of his destiny.
Hurt also had a memorable role in Doctor Who as The War Doctor and appeared in the 50th Anniversary Special with The Tenth and Eleventh Doctors. He was The Doctor who had to make a vital decision, but not alone.
1 Colin Morgan
Colin Morgan starred in the title role of Merlin, the greatest sorcerer to ever walk the earth. He was quirky, endearing, powerful, and had brilliant chemistry on screen.
Before his notable role, Morgan was Jethro, a survivor of the locked room Doctor Who episode, “Midnight.” Jethro was traveling with his parents and was thrown into the unknown when a mysterious entity made itself a fellow traveler in a shuttle bus. It was an episode where reactions and actions were everything.
