Netflix has produced a wide range of original series over the years. More than anything else, they’ve produced dramas that are genuinely compelling. Recently, they’ve made quite a few series that are increasingly becoming popular with audiences.

While the track record of Netflix is improving, there’s still plenty of dramas that are a real surprise. Whether it’s because they were an unexpected hit or didn’t quite live up to expectations, here are ten of the most surprising Netflix original dramas.

10 AFTER LIFE

The Ricky Gervais comedy and drama was always expected to be well written. However, the past few years have seen some of Gervais’ content have mixed results both critically and commercially. This all changed with the latest show though.

The series became a bit of a runaway success, outliving what it’s original shelf life would have been. With a sequel on the way, Gervais managed to find his groove again, combining moments of genuine levity and hilarious jokes.

It’s likely that Netflix would have thought this show would get a one-off forgettable season that would have blended in with some of the other relationship-based shows. Indeed, at least it had a niche selling point with the use of a stalker.

However, nobody expected the series to grip viewers quite so much. It became almost an overnight success and the second season has propelled it into the stratosphere. It really has been one of the most surprising shows on this list.

8 THE STRANGER

One of Netflix’s most recent crime series based on the much-loved book has also been a bit of a surprise hit. Although it certainly matches some of the other successes on this list, it’s still surprising how well people have taken to the show.

Perhaps it’s the mystery surrounding this stranger, the compelling writing of the main character or perhaps because it features a wonderful cast, but the show has outperformed all expectations and is sure to receive follow-ups in the future.

7 DEAD TO ME

While some of these shows have outperformed anything that was imagined for them, this show seems to have been surprisingly average. While it was well-received critically and has a lot of viewers, it hasn’t been a hit like many other shows on this list.

It has a great set up and is full of action, mystery, drama and big shocking moments. Yet, compared to other shows it’s kind of been forgotten about already, which is a shame due to the quality of it. Perhaps a second season will perform how the first should have.

The book series was a major hit amongst teen audiences and the show was set to hit that same demographic. The first season garnered the attention of just more than this demographic though and told an extremely emotional tale of suicide and those it affects.

This was a surprise in itself, but the bigger surprise was how the series performed after this. The second and third season dropped in quality and indeed in viewers, with many seemingly only watching the first season. It’s a shame since there was so much more potential here.

5 A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS

The book series has become a classic amongst a younger audience and the original film was well-received although never got to see a sequel. When a series was announced there was certainly speculation on what that would actually mean for the franchise.

This show was surprising for two reasons. Firstly, it was an excellent adaptation of the novels and there will perhaps never be a better one. However, the second reason is that compared to other fantasy series and dramas, this did not have the same level of fandom as other Netflix hits.

4 SEX EDUCATION

Rarely do teen dramas like this go beyond the genre and audience they are designed for. However, with an amazing cast and genuine stories based on the reality of sex amongst teenagers and adults, this has been one of the biggest surprises on this list.

It’s easy for this kind of comedy and drama to play much of its content for laughs and try to go for as much lowbrow humor as possible. Instead, this has been a really emotionally charged series, with enough relate-able stories to really make these characters feel alive.

3 OZARK

Ozark should have been a runaway success but never quite succeeded where it should have done. With a huge comedy star in its lead, perhaps the marketing behind it was mixed as this is such a dark and heavy drama.

While the show is incredibly well made and produced, it hasn’t managed to perform like other similar series have on Netflix. It’s a shame as there was a lot to work with here, but the show appears to be starting to come to an end now.

2 RUSSIAN DOLL

There’s been plenty of shows that have taken the concept of being stuck in a time loop and used this to create an intricate and detailed plot. However, none have worked quite so well as this show.

Although the idea is a familiar one audiences have seemingly gravitated towards this iteration of the format. The clever writing and excellent performances help, but it was such a surprise to see Netflix subscribers respond so well to this.

1 THE CROWN

Period pieces often do well and a show about the British Royal Family was sure to be a hit. However, usually, these kinds of shows do appeal to a very specific audience and rarely go past this.

Somehow, this tale has managed to become a worldwide hit. It’s not just the British keeping this show alive, in fact, it’s probably one of Netflix’s most well-known dramas. The writing is what really brings this alive, along with the time jumps across the reign of Elizabeth II.
