There are movie heroes even more badass than John Wick?! Yes, there certainly are.

The man of pure will, Babayaga himself, the boogeyman you send to kill The Boogeyman, is one of the best action heroes we’ve ever had. He looks cool, he loves dogs, and he doesn’t get paid by the hour so he’s efficiently deadly to a terminal degree. He is so badass he doesn’t even need one-liners, explosions, or much more than his name to instill fear from criminals to kingpins. And yet, there’s a shortlist of awesome action icons who can be argued to shade him by just a little.

So far, John Wick is three-for-three in amazing action films, but this list houses those who’ve had entire sagas, or even just a single effort that showed they might just be more badass than the infamous Mr. Wick.

10 Brian Mills – Taken

10 Movie Heroes More Badass Than John Wick

The sequels may have trailed off in quality but that first Taken stands tall to this day. From the moment he lets his daughter know she’s about to be ‘Taken’ we got the sense this isn’t a normal action template and Brian Mills isn’t any regular ‘action grandpa’. His “particular set of skills” has become infamous as a result of this first flick, and the succinct detective work and action set pieces that followed stamped this effort with class.

There’s just something satisfying about seeing someone who knows for certain what to do and then doing it without the usual contrived complications ensuing. Bad guys did bad guy things, and Brian Mills saved his daughter regardless. And he didn’t need any ‘markers’ or ‘coins’ to get it done. Just a badass doing badass things.

9 Wolverine – Logan

10 Movie Heroes More Badass Than John Wick

Wolverine’s always been a badass, but his turn in the titular Logan lands him a spot here. The eternally young, always healing, Adamantium-clawed animal finally got put down, but not before an amazing final flurry. As his body finally gives out on him after years of running it in the red, he gets a reason to live and to unleash his fury one more time, and it’s glorious.

Across the X-Men franchise, Wolverine had plenty of limb-chopping action fun but this swansong to his story elevated him into the badass Hall Of Fame. Brutal, beautiful, and with added feels to top it off. John Wick could only hope for such an ending, but he’s already had his ‘happily ever after’ and now he’ll never rest soundly again.

8 Ash Williams – Evil Dead

10 Movie Heroes More Badass Than John Wick

Ash Williams undoubtedly has some of the most insanely badass moments of anyone on this list. Screaming in gleeful rage as you sever your hand off so you can attach a chainsaw to it is an immediate badass hall pass. Even if you don’t count his latest efforts in Ash Vs Evil Dead, the wild, improvisational chaos that Ash blusters through in the Evil Dead trilogy never gets old.

Bruce Campbell puts so much goofy charisma into everything Ash does that putting him next to Wick makes them seem like entirely separate species. Plus, Ash Williams knows when a demonic Deadite is just playing possum and needs a double-tap. When you’ve got that much experience dealing with supernatural evil, you’re badass without question. Plus, the chin of a badass never hurts.

7 Maximus Decimus Meridius – Gladiator

10 Movie Heroes More Badass Than John Wick

Maximus is as inspirational as he is badass, and inspirational beats inducing fear like Mr. Wick. Given one of the most egregious antagonists ever in Emperor Commodus, Maximus went from General, to slave, to Gladiator, to heroic martyr all in one showing.

He can slay quicker, stronger, more experienced foes with a variety of weapons. He survived near-death and the loss of his family to rise up and remove a tyrant with his bare hands. He even made those around him better just for being with them, and what’s more badass than that? Probably doing it while having a cool catchphrase. Yes, we are entertained!

6 Chev Chelios – Crank

10 Movie Heroes More Badass Than John Wick

While John Wick accomplishes his tasks with a cool focus, Crank’s Chev Chelios survives constant hovering death by being too raging to ever stop. Having to constantly keep his blood pumping or his mechanical heart electrified brilliantly forces him to accomplish badassery in a never-ending stream of violence (and sometimes love).

Never-not scowling in some form or fashion, he leaves a trail of destruction you’d usually need a tank to accomplish. Easily Statham’s most over-the-top character, it still overflows the badass-meter time after time. John Wick accomplishes his awesomeness without disturbing the masses. Chev Chelios makes the nightly news with his death and wakes up the next day for more.

5 John Creasy – Man On Fire

10 Movie Heroes More Badass Than John Wick

‘Creasy’s art is death, and he’s about to paint his masterpiece’. You could supplant Creasy’s name for John Wick’s and it’d fit just as well, so Creasy matches Wick at the very least. That one line is so brimming with badass potential you might expect the rest of the story not to be able to live up to it. Man On Fire does so much more than that.

Denzel Washington’s John Creasy rampages through Mexico in the name of the little girl who gave him a glimpse of better times. With her kidnapping and botched ransom, hearing about her death pushes him over the edge. Seeing someone die on the inside only to rise again as a charismatic grim reaper who collects pain as repayment shouldn’t be this fun, but it’s that and more by the end.

4 John McClane – Die Hard

10 Movie Heroes More Badass Than John Wick

Die Hard’s John McClane’s badass credentials shine pretty bright. John Wick has fallen off buildings and survived. John McClane jumped off towers with a fire hose-harness and swung back inside to finish off his wife’s kidnappers! John Wick’s answer to most every problem is a bullet (or a pencil), while McClane occasionally solves a riddle or a conspiracy on the side of his various forms of mayhem.

John Wick is a world-class assassin feared among assassins as he kills everyone in line-of-sight. John McClane is still ‘just a cop’ and yet survives the things he does despite no chance of having any clue how or what to do beforehand. That’s the difference.

3 Dutch – Predator

10 Movie Heroes More Badass Than John Wick

He fought to a TKO/Tapout/Nuke-icide with a freaking alien game-hunter! The list of things more badass than that could fit on a post-it note. You might dismiss Dutch from the badass stakes simply because he looks the part so much it’s like he had an unfair advantage, but that’s what happens when you’re Arnie.

The list of iconic moments and lines from Dutch are too many to recount here, but depending on the terrain Dutch could potentially outmaneuver Wick. Where Dutch tips ahead is that he had to fight a force he had no way of ever preparing for, while John Wick knows how people fight from innumerable encounters. Points for degree of difficulty, if you will.

2 The Bride/Beatrix Kiddo – Kill Bill

10 Movie Heroes More Badass Than John Wick

Quentin Tarantino’s uber-heroine who rose from the dead to take revenge of the ‘roaring rampage’ variety. While we’re told about John Wick’s iron-will and completion of ‘impossible tasks’ from before the series, we actually get to see Beatrix Kiddo’s version of that.

She matches Mr. Wick in having an iconic look, a signature weapon, an unstoppable will, and a ruthless efficiency bordering on god-like death-dealing. However, she ultimately escapes her world of destructive murder with her kid in tow to boot, while John seems to only sink deeper with every body he makes cold.

1 Atticus Finch – To Kill A Mockingbird

Of the many types of badass listed here, there is one that only Finch embodies the ideals of and that’s standing in the face of ignorance and injustice. Everyone else had some personal skin in the game, but Atticus Finch stepped into an arena he could’ve avoided had he been anyone less badass than himself. Every second in his vicinity radiates a presence none of these badasses can quite touch.

There’s a visceral joy to watching John Wick throw multiple knives into the last guy in a flurried gang fight, that’s always going to be true. But there’s a real chance that if John Wick walked into a room and was confronted by little more than Atticus Finch’s reproachful gaze, he’d back out of the room slowly and thank his luck to do so.
