The Harry Potter books and movies have something for everyone: There are best buds, romantic interests, and battles of good versus evil. There are intriguing creatures, threatening villains and the coolest classes in the world. There is also a hero, an exciting sport and a whole bunch of magic.

Over the years, besides just entertaining fans of all ages, this story has taught some very valuable lessons; amidst practicing spells and going up against Voldemort, there was enlightenment on topics such as friendship, bravery, and love. And here are 10 of the biggest lessons we can learn from Harry Potter.

10 Never Be Ashamed

The Malfoys looked down on the Weasleys. Some kids thought Luna was weird. And according to Hagrid, these people are not worth botherin’ with!

As a half-giant wizard, Rubeus Hagrid was not always liked by everyone, and he certainly got some strange stares now and then. In a sweet and teachable moment with Harry, Ron and Hermione, though, he told them the following: “I am what I am, an’ I’m not ashamed. ‘Never be ashamed,’ my ol’ dad used ter say.”

9 Be Brave

At the end of every school year, Dumbledore would give points out to different students and houses at Hogwarts. In an iconic moment, Neville racked some up, due to the fact that he stood up to the main characters, even though it was scary and stressful.

Dumbledore said, “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” Those who can do both are true heroes.

8 Choose Wisely

Someone else who shared some wisdom within this tale was Sirius Black: “We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.”

No one is perfect, and every day, we are faced with struggles, decisions, and bumps in the road. We can react negatively or positively, and our choices help define us… So choose wisely!

7 Find The Happiness

When tough moments do come about, there is still hope and happiness, “if one only remembers to turn on the light.” This famous line (which was also from Dumbledore) is referenced by fans, printed onto products and thought of often, and that is beautiful!

There is always a silver lining, and the glass can always be half full. We just have to focus on the good, no matter what and “even in the darkest of times”.

6 Know What’s Important

Everyone knows that Hermione loves a good book and adores soaking up knowledge. She has her priorities straight, though, as seen in this next quote: “Books! And cleverness! There are more important things—friendship and bravery.”

So if she can put her relationships and her courage before literature and learning, then we, too, can remember to cherish the truly important things in life.

5 Remember That Every Human Life Is Worth The Same

Speaking of importance… “We’re all human, aren’t we? Every human life is worth the same and worth saving.” Kingsley Shacklebolt is credited with these words. It seems some people in today’s day and age need to hear them.

No matter our race, gender, age, location, abilities, or magical powers/lack thereof, we are all beautiful and worthy.

4 Don’t Forget To Live

Schedules, plans, jobs, goals, chores, dreams, classes… It can all get very busy and hectic, which is why another line from Dumbledore is worth hearing and reading and adding to this list: “It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.”

Being productive and reaching for the stars is great, but we can’t reach that next step unless we, first, live out our present lives.

3 Eat The Pasties

Remember when Harry had treats to share and had someone with which to share them? This part of the book said, “it was a nice feeling, sitting there with Ron, eating their way through all Harry’s pasties, cakes, and candies…”

And the lesson here is to eat the sweets, share the goods, and relish the times that are shared with loved ones!

2 Take Comfort In The Fact That Lost Things Aren’t Gone For Good

In this story, Luna Lovegood stated, “Things we lose have a way of coming back to us in the end, if not always in the way we expect.” These words could be applied to losing, say, our keys, and they work well with deeper and more dramatic topics, such as death.

In the magical world of Harry Potter, the titular character is able to see and interact with his late parents at times. We may not have mirrors that show us what we want most in life, and we may not have the power to bring in ghosts as backups during fights. But lost things are never gone for good.

1 Spread The Love… Always

Last but not least, Harry Potter puts love on display in a variety of ways. There are strangers who become life-long friends, BFFs who tie the knot, enemies who transform into respected peers, and a professor who admitted that he will have feelings for a certain someone… always.

In real life, we should think back on all of this fondly. We should not judge books by their covers. We should appreciate the caring souls around us. And we should spread the love… always.
