Horror remakes aren’t anything new, but these ten revivals are famous on IMDb for all the wrong reasons.

Remakes are unavoidable in an industry preoccupied with franchises and recognizable brands. If it was a memorable hit at some point in the last hundred years, expect to see a remake of it every twenty years or so. This is especially true for horror movies, as the genre is full of immediately recognizable villains and iconography.

However, remaking a horror movie can be a double aged sword (or kitchen knife), as with increased familiarity, horror ideas tend to lose that essential scare factor. Many horror remakes stumble in their execution, bringing nothing fresh to the table and watering down concepts that were once fresh.

10 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) – 6.2

10 Of The Worst Horror Movie Remakes According To IMDb

Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the greatest slasher movies of all time. It’s unhinged, grimy, and disturbingly realistic in its directorial style. Part of the original’s charm and scare factor is in its low budget realism, making it feel like a nightmarish home movie.

Where 2003’s remake fails is in its big studio budget. It’s glossy, expensive, and looks exactly like every other horror that came out in 2003. It’s not by any means the worst remake, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the original.

9 Halloween (2007) – 6.1

10 Of The Worst Horror Movie Remakes According To IMDb

What makes John Carpenter’s original Halloween so scary is that it leaves viewers feeling like Michael Myers could be anyone, lurking in any neighborhood. The mystery surrounding Michael Myers makes him a force of nature that will violate any sense of suburban safety.

Rob Zombie’s remake goes in a completely different direction with Michael Myers and consequently loses what makes him so scary. The remake depicts a painfully detailed origin rooted in Myers’ inevitable destiny. Unfortunately, the indulgent story about his poor upbringing and mommy issues doesn’t serve the story well and genuinely takes away from the feeling that Michael Myers could be anyone.

8 Pet Sematary (2019) – 5.7

10 Of The Worst Horror Movie Remakes According To IMDb

With the success of 2017’s It, Stephen King remakes, reboots, and adaptations are back in style. A Pet Sematary remake was inevitable, as the book and original movie are some of the most iconic pieces of Stephen King’s media. 2019’s Pet Sematary is a great example of why not to remake a classic horror movie.

Where the cinematic two-part It brought a new style, better storytelling, and generally improved upon the 1990 made-for-TV version, the new Pet Sematary doesn’t bring anything new to the table. It stands in the shadow of its predecessor, and barely holds up against contemporary horror films.

7 Friday The 13th (2009) – 5.5

10 Of The Worst Horror Movie Remakes According To IMDb

It’s hard to believe that this once juggernaut of a slasher franchise hasn’t seen a sequel in more than a decade. At one point, a new entry in the Friday The 13th franchise was guaranteed almost every year. This most recent installment was a full-on reboot and although it didn’t succeed as intended, it’s really not as bad as many other remakes.

In light of some of the undead duds that this series has had, this Friday The 13th is a solid entry point for newcomers. The film efficiently compacts the first three or so movies into the story through easter eggs and references. It’s got some solid kills, special effects, and a serviceable story lead by Jared Padalecki.

6 House Of Wax (2005) – 5.3

10 Of The Worst Horror Movie Remakes According To IMDb

Remember when Paris Hilton was trying to kickstart her movie star career? Yeah, neither does the rest of the movie-going public. Marketing for House Of Wax leaned heavily on Hilton’s role in this film, but that wasn’t enough to save it from entering the collection of sub-par remakes from the early 2000’s.

A good House Of Wax movie hasn’t come out in decades and while the 1953 version is still a classic, the older it gets the less it holds up. Some would even call it a guilty pleasure rather than a bona fide classic. Other than Vincent Price stealing the show, it’s hard to engage with the movie as the time period and style is so far removed from what’s relatable today. A solid House Of Wax remake is possible, but the 2005 version isn’t it.

5 A Nightmare On Elm Street (2010) – 5.2

10 Of The Worst Horror Movie Remakes According To IMDb

The latest incarnation of A Nightmare On Elm Street is no dream to sit through. The hardest thing about this movie is that there is a genuinely talented cast, especially Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy and Rooney Mara as Nancy. But like a lot of other horror remakes, the original Nightmare casts a big shadow that the remake fails to step out of.

A modern version of A Nightmare On Elm Street could work, especially with some surreal dream sequences and state of the art special effects. While this movie doesn’t look bad, it doesn’t go far enough in defining it’s visual style compared to contemporary horror movies, let alone compared to the rest of the Nightmare series.

4 Poltergeist (2015) – 4.9

10 Of The Worst Horror Movie Remakes According To IMDb

It’s hard to imagine a good reason to remake Poltergeist. The original is such a classic, and its special effects and scares genuinely hold up to this day. This remake brings nothing original to the concept and feels like a heartless cash grab compared to the innovative original.

Poltergeist isn’t an objectively bad remake, though. It’s well crafted and features lots of homages to the original. However, therein lies the problem, as there is no clear reason for this film to be made when the original still exists.

3 Psycho (1998) – 4.6

10 Of The Worst Horror Movie Remakes According To IMDb

It’s almost unbelievable that anyone ever attempted a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s seminal classic Psycho. Even more surprising is the method of filmmaking, as director Gus Van Sant set out to remake the film shot-for-shot. This may be the only example of a 1:1 remake of a movie.

Though it’s an interesting experiment, this film ultimately has nothing to offer, especially compared to Hitchcock’s original. The original Psycho is iconic, to the point where many people who haven’t seen the film can still recognize an out of context scene from it. This remake feels like a filmmaker trying to see if a 1:1 remake is possible as a bet, not a genuine effort to modernize an old story.

2 The Wickerman (2006) – 3.7

10 Of The Worst Horror Movie Remakes According To IMDb

The infamous remake of The Wicker Man is terrible, especially compared to 1973’s original (which holds up surprisingly well). With that said, it does have some redeeming qualities as a so-bad-it’s-good movie. This is perfect for anyone who is a fan of Nicolas Cage in all of his campy glory.

His most memorable and frequently memed moment is the “not the bees” sequence, which is actually a deleted scene that could only be seen on the DVD. It’s pure Nicolas Cage gold, and for that alone this film is worth watching on a bad movie night.

1 The Fog (2005) – 3.7

At best, The Fog is a forgettable bore that tries desperately to recapture the magic of John Carpenter’s original. Very few horror filmmakers are as brilliant and stylish as Carpenter, so it’s no wonder why this run-of-the-mill remake flopped hard.

There are very few redeeming qualities to this remake. Tom Welling’s performance is pretty stiff, and the bulk of the film is forgettable. The Fog remains a foggy (heh) memory of a failed remake, paling in comparison to the cult classic that is the original.
