Normal-type Pokémon don’t sound very impressive at first, thanks to their name. However, many of the Pokémon franchise’s most powerful Pokémon are Normal-types and use Normal-type moves. It’s best not to write them off, given they only have a single weakness: Fighting-types.

Many Normal-types are made available early on in the games, and most of them are dual-type, giving them additional benefits. Although Normal-type Pokémon don’t deal super-effective damage against any of the other types, dual-typing often cover up such weaknesses — and these Pokémon can have abilities that make them even better picks.

10 Girafarig Is Immune To Ghost Despite Being Part-Psychic

Most Psychic-type Pokémon take double damage when hit by Ghost-type moves, but Girafarig is one of the few exceptions to this rule, all because it’s part Normal-type. Not only is this weakness negated, but it’s actually immune to Ghost-type moves entirely. Additionally, this Pokémon doesn’t even have the weakness to Fighting because of its Psychic half, leaving it weak only to Bug and Dark moves.

9 Mega Lopunny Can Hit Ghost-Types With Scrappy

Lopunny is usually a pure Normal-type, but when it evolves, it becomes a Normal/Fighting dual-type. Only in its Mega form does Lopunny have Scrappy, an ability that blocks Intimidate and allows Pokémon to land Normal and Fighting moves on Ghost Pokémon.

This means that it’s a viable threat to Ghost Pokémon, able to unleash many of the heavy-hitting Normal-type moves that wouldn’t have connected before.

8 Noctowl Has Foresight To Hit Ghosts And Ignore Evasiveness

While Mega Lopunny’s ability allows it to land hits on Ghost-types, Noctowl has a non-damaging move with the same effect. Foresight also allows the user to ignore any stat changes that raised their foe’s evasiveness. This Normal-type move is incredibly useful for a Pokémon. Noctowl is known for its accuracy, as the Pokédex states that its sharp eyesight and 180-degree head rotation allows it to spot targets from far away.

7 Swellow Has A High Speed Stat And No Fighting-Type Weakness

Normal-types are best when paired with Flying-type Pokémon. Flying-type Pokémon are resistant to Fighting-type moves, so a Pokémon like Swellow only takes regular damage from Fighting-types.

When it comes to speed, Swellow is among the top 30 Pokémon with the highest Speed stat. This allows it to use powerhouse moves like Brave Bird before the opponent even has a chance to move.

6 Obstagoon Can Lower Defense And Use Heavy-Hitting Moves

Obstagoon is known for its signature move, Obstruct. This move protects Obstagoon from everything except status-affecting moves, and being attacked during this turn lowers the enemy’s Defense stat. It’s a nice setup that allows Obstagoon to deal extra damage the next turn. It’s also capable of learning Mega Kick, a physical move with a total of 120 power. This Pokémon may be grinning most of the time, but its strength is no joke.

5 Staraptor Has High Attack, High Speed, And No Fighting-Type Weakness

Like Swellow, Staraptor doesn’t have to worry about Fighting-type damage, and if it had been any other type besides Normal-type, it would have additional weaknesses. It’s also immune to Ghost-type moves. Staraptor has a higher attack stat than even Mega Pidgeot along with a high Speed stat. With the addition of Reckless, an ability that makes moves with recoil damage stronger, using a Normal-type move like Take Down is even better.

4 Pyroar Has High Special Attack, High Speed, And An Immunity To Ghost

Pyroar’s only immunity is to Ghost-type moves, and it has its Normal-type side to thank for that. Speed and Special Attack are its highest stats, which is convenient not only because it’s part Fire-type, but because there are a fair few powerful Normal-type special moves. Pyroar also has the ability Moxie, which raises its attack if it makes a Pokémon faint, making other Normal moves viable as well.

3 Diggersby Has Odor Sleuth And Huge Power

Thanks to being a dual-type Normal/Ground Pokémon, Diggersby is completely immune to Ghost-type and Electric-type moves. It has the ability Huge Power, which doubles its attack stat, and since most of the moves that it can learn deal physical damage, the Digging Pokémon is guaranteed to hit hard. Additionally, it can use Odor Sleuth, which makes it yet another Normal-type Pokémon that can dish out damage to Ghost-type Pokémon.

2 Bewear Boasts Incredible Power And Has Access To The Strongest Normal-Type Moves

Bewear is a Normal/Fighting dual-type, known for its physical prowess and ability to give bone-shattering hugs. With incredibly high base stats in both HP and Attack, Bewear can take and deal a lot of damage using some of the strongest Normal-type moves in the entire series. Its ability, Fluffy, makes it even harder to take it down: this ability makes Bewear take half damage from direct attacks. Even better, it also has the immunity to Ghost-types.

1 Braviary Has High Attack And No Fighting-Type Weakness

Braviary gains the same advantages that the other Flying/Normal combos do. Like many other Normal-types, it’s set up to be a physical attacker and excels at it, thanks to its powerful Normal-type moveset and its ability Defiant. If an enemy lowers its stats, Braviary’s Attack stat rises, giving it the potential to become stronger than even Bewear. Braviary is one of the most aggressive and intimidating Normal-types in the games, and few want to pick a fight with it.
