With 893 Pokémon, there are a lot of options when making a team. Most people pick their favorites, but it can be difficult to choose a concrete six for a team because of how many there are. Not all Pokémon are equal, however, as many have similar typings but different stats. There are 18 total typings, with several different combinations.

There is a lot of overlap and some are stronger, more defensive, or just all-around better than many others with similar moves, stats, and move pools. There are simply several Pokémon that, while good at what they do, can be replaced by another Pokémon that does it better.

10 Ariados Has Middling Stats & Is Outshined By Mega-Beedrill

Mega-evolutions increase a Pokémon’s base stat total by 100, usually decreasing some stats in favor of others. In the case of Mega-Beedrill, the investment went into its Attack and Speed, making it the fastest Bug Pokémon in the game. Even compared to many other Bug or Poison-types, Ariados doesn’t offer very much that can’t be substituted for something better.

It has access to some high base power moves but it falls short of being too offensive or even being able to use hazardous moves like Sticky Web or Toxic Spikes. Mega-Beedrill has the speed to cover its frailty while Ariados has neither bulk, the chance to set up, or even the speed to set up multiple entry hazards.

9 Arbok’s Buff Didn’t Help It Stand Out As A Pure Poison-Type

In Gen VII, Arbok received a small 10 point base stat increase to its Attack. It had a lot more love with move tutors as well, able to learn moves like Seed Bomb, Aqua Tail, and even Stomping Tantrum. However, even with the buff, Arbok doesn’t match up well against nearly every other Poison-type in the game.

Muk, for instance, has better stats, a better spread for those stats, and has higher Attack and better bulk. Even without considering Alolan Muk’s typing and stats, regular Muk has moves that can increase its defenses while dealing a good amount of damage. It outshines Arbok in nearly every way possible, no matter how the two are compared.

8 Druddigon’s Use As A Powerful Physical Attacker Is Outclassed By Haxorus

Both introduced in Gen V, Druddigon and Haxorus are two pure Dragon-type Pokémon that provide similar roles to a team. Both have incredibly high Attack and similar learn sets, but Haxorus takes the spotlight with its Speed. Additionally, Haxorus can learn Dragon Dance where Druddigon can’t, and has better Attack and Speed stats even without it.

Druddigon has higher Sp. Defense, but because it’ll move second in most encounters and doesn’t have quite enough power to OHKO an opponent without Outrage, it isn’t worth using the Pokémon when so many Dragon-types do all of its jobs better. It has its uses with Rough Skin and Sheer Force, but Haxorus is almost always a better choice.

7 Quagsire Does Everything Gastrodon Can, But Better

The Water-Ground type is one of the strongest in the game as it only has one weakness. The amount of resistance it has makes it a good defensive option wherever it can be added into a team. Gastrodon’s use as a tank is done very well with natural recovery and some good moves to apply super-effective damage with.

Toxic can be used to whittle down opponents while staying healthy with Recover and gains immunity to Water with Storm Drain. This would be a gracious option for any team if it weren’t for Quagsire, who has Water Absorb for Water immunity, but also the better ability, Unaware. The ability makes it so opposing Pokémon’s stat increases have no effect on Quagsire, making it a perfect switch in for Dragon Dancing Haxorus’s or Swords Dancing Beedrills.

6 Chimecho Has A Great Set Of Moves But Its Stats Leave More To Be Desired

Pure Psychic-types like Alakazam, Reuniclus, and Espeon provide utility and power to any team. Reuniclus can be attacked and switch out freely with its recovery moves and Regenerator ability, and Alakazam and Espeon have high Speed and Sp. Attack that can sweep teams under pressure. Chimecho has far more utility with Healing Wish, Thunder Wave, and Taunt but lacks the stats to really put any of these things to use.

It is too frail to be able to make use of multiple status moves and not fast enough to make use of Healing Wish. With a Focus Sash and some slow Pokémon on the opposing team, this could work out, but almost any other Psychic-type can replace it.

5 Primeape Has The Moves But Machamp Has The Power

There are many pure Fighting-type Pokémon and most of them fill a specific position on a team as either a revenge killer or a highly offensive powerhouse. Primeape has decent stats and is far from the worst Fighting-type but it is held back by its damage capabilities. For as strong as it is, it doesn’t have the damage potential to even revenge kill properly unless the opposing Pokémon is damaged already.

Compared to Machamp, who has higher Attack and more reliable KOs, there’s no competition as to who to pick for a team. No Guard Machamp is deadly and guarantees to confuse the opponent, but when it comes down to choosing a Fighting-type for the team, the best bet is Mega-Medicham or Mega-Lopunny.

4 Victreebel & Vileploom Pale In Comparison To Venusaur

Grass-Poison in the first generation was very saturated and Vileploom was unmatched for grass attacks. Victreebel didn’t have much going for it, but it still saw play with its higher Attack stat for Physical Poison moves. In later generations, things changed, as Venusaur was much more relevant with the introduction of Hidden Abilities.

Chlorophyll doubles the user’s speed if the sun is up, making Venusaur very strong with Solar Beam and Weather Ball. Venusaur also has a mega, which severely raises its team potential as it becomes very strong in its mega form.

3 Aromatisse’s Use As A Healer Can Be Done Better By Clefable

The two Fairy-types are able to set up for the long game with stat-increasing moves for better KOs, but they can also both reliably serve as a healer for the team. Aromatisse has similar stats to Clefable, trading higher HP for lower Defense and Sp. Defense, but Clefable’s ability puts in on top.

Unaware is simply too good when facing other Pokémon that have severely increased their stats. On top of this, Clefable’s ability to set up, use moves like Aromatherapy or Healing Wish effectively without risk, and still use reliable recovery makes it a much better option.

2 Donphan’s Stats & Low Speed Make Excadrill The Better Ground-Type

Both Donphan and Excadrill have access to Rapid Spin and Earthquake, two very strong moves to use in competitive Pokémon. Getting rid of entry hazards is very important and both of these Pokémon can set up their own entry hazards as well. Donphan can make use of its Sturdy in order to guarantee setting up rocks or getting some damage in, but Excadrill can do the same with Focus Sash.

Excadrill is frailer, but has higher Attack and can be used as a very offensive threat. Sand Rush doubles its speed, and Sand Force increases its damage output while still being able to do everything Donphan can do aside from using a very cheeky Ice Shard.

1 Absol Is Overshadowed By Almost Every Other Dark-Type

Even with a Mega-Evolution, Absol pales in comparison to other choices for a mega. Without access to that in Gen VIII, Absol still has a move pool that has little to offer apart from Superpower, Sucker Punch, and Play Rough. Coverage isn’t something that will come from this Pokémon, and without some sort of Speed increase, it is hard to counter any threats to its typing.

Krookodile, Bisharp, and Crawdaunt all outpace Absol with priority, better damage potential, and diversity. Being a pure Dark-type gives it three weaknesses, but it has very weak moves to counter any threats to it.
