As the hottest of the four seasons, summer brings to mind images of days at the beach, fun in the sun, and relaxing with a nice fan.

In the world of Pokémon, the animals people might associate with summer might take on a whole new look, depending on how their corresponding Pokémon are designed. That said, some Pokémon that aren’t directly based on animals could still have a summery theme and bring to mind fun summer activities.

10 Lapras: This Pokémon Can Give You A Nice Ride On The Water

A Lapras is a dual-type Pokémon, combining the Water and Ice types. It generally doesn’t evolve into other forms, nor is it known to evolve from any form, but it does have a Gigantamax form. Coming from the first generation, it has also been a longstanding part of the franchise. In the anime, Ash saved a baby Lapras and caught it before ultimately returning it to its family.

In the English dub’s first opening, Ash famously can be seen riding a Lapras while out at sea and watching other oceanic Pokémon swimming through the waters. Because of this, it helps bring to mind a nice summer trip to the beach or a soothing swim.

9 Tentacool: The Pokémon World’s Jellyfish

A day at the beach can be a lot of fun in the sun, but it’s also filled with all kinds of nuisances, like jellyfish with their painful stings. Even the Pokémon universe has its own version of jellyfish with Tentacool.

Tentacool are Water and Poison type. In fact, they are said to be literally made of 99% water, with the rest being poison. The red crystals on its body have often been mistaken for its eyes, which are actually located lower on its body. In the anime, a Tentacool notably once managed to control and speak through Team Rocket’s Meowth, technically making it one of the few Pokémon that can communicate with human languages.

8 Horsea: This Pokémon Combines A Seahorse With A Water Gun

The ocean might be filled with dangerous beasts, but they are also animals that are less threatening to humans, like the seahorse. Seahorses are iconic marine animals, especially in Japan where they are associated with dragons.

The Pokémon equivalent is Horsea, a Water-type Pokémon introduced in the first generation. It can evolve into a Seadra, which can evolve into Kingdra, an appropriate combination of Water and Dragon types.

7 Wailord: The Blue Whale Has Its Own Pokémon

Whales are an iconic part of summer. Not only do they bring to mind a day at the beach, but a popular summer pastime is to go whale watching.

Wailord is the whale-themed Pokémon, a Water-type that evolves from Wailmer with a shape that more closely resembles a whale than in its earlier form. Based on the blue whale, it is notably the tallest of the Water-type Pokémon, as well as having the highest base HP of the type. Despite its size, the games show it can be resized to fit on the battlefield.

6 Palossand: Even Sandcastles Get Their Own Pokémon

The fun of going to the beach isn’t just in the water. Many like to have some fun on the sand, whether it’s looking for buried treasures, searching for washed-up shells, or making sandcastles. Not only does the world of Pokémon have its own versions of sea life, it even has its own take on a sandcastle: Palossand, a dual-type that combines the Ghost and Ground types.

Despite its cute appearance, it is feared for its ability to control adults to build its castle. It evolves from Sandygast, which similarly looks like a pile of sand with a colorful shovel sticking out, and which prefers to manipulate children into giving it more sand.

5 Wingull: This Pokémon Goes From Seagull To Pelican

If someone goes to the beach with food, they might expect to see a hungry seagull looking for any leftovers. It helps that seagulls have been known to appear on every continent, even Antarctica.

Wingull is the seagull’s Pokémon counterpart, combining the Water and Flying types. It can also evolve into a Pelipper, designed from another well-known sea bird: the pelican.

4 Fan Rotom: This Pokémon Can Help People Cool Off

During the summer months, one way people can keep themselves cool is with a nice fan or air conditioner. When it comes to the world of Pokémon, there is even a friendly pocket monster based around a fan.

Technically, Rotom is a dual-type Electric and Ghost Pokémon that doesn’t have any evolutions, but it can change form by taking over various appliances. It can naturally become a Fan Rotom by fusing with an electric fan, combining the Electric and Flying types.

3 Roserade: This Pokémon Honors The Flower Of June

Roses are heavily associated with the month of June, although when they actually bloom depends on the type of rose, as well as its location and weather. That said, it’s still a symbol of the month that starts the summer season, at least in the Western hemisphere. Roserade combines the Grass and Poison types. It evolves from Roselia, which itself evolves from the slightly less rosy Budew.

2 Oshawott: This Pokémon Is Otter-Themed

Another summer day activity is going to the zoo, and a popular staple of many a zoo is the otter, another aquatic animal that brings to mind a nice swim.

The Water-type Oshawott is based on an otter. It can evolve into a Dewott and later a Samurott. In its first form, it’s also one of the starter Pokémon of Unova. Depending on the game, it can also be one of the starter Pokémon for Sinnoh.

1 Squirtle: The Original Water-Themed Pokémon

All in all, water is usually the thing people turn to the most to cool off in the summer heat. For many Pokémon fans, the first Water-type they think of is Squirtle. After all, it is one of three starter Pokémon of Kanto, making it part of the first starter Pokémon of the franchise alongside Bulbasaur and Charmander.

Had he not been late at the start of the series, Ash might have chosen a Squirtle, but fate had him end up with his famous Pikachu. He did get to catch and befriend a Squirtle that was introduced as a member of the rogue Squirtle Squad, though it eventually rejoined its gang.
