The Pokémon type system is one of the most elegant game mechanics of all time. Each Pokémon has two signifiers that determine its strengths and weaknesses in battle, as well as offer an insight into its design and origin. There are over 300 different ways to mix and match the types, allowing for massive variation with just a primary and secondary type.
But Pokémon being limited to only two types leads to some missing what seems to be a crucial piece of their identity. Adding a third type would fundamentally alter the way Pokémon plays, and that makes it unlikely. But if it did ever happen, these Pokémon should be first in line for an extra tag.
10 Gallade Could Be Just As Much A Fairy As Gardevoire
Introduced in Generation 4 as a branching evolution to pair with Gardevoir, Gallade is a master of chivalry and swordsmanship capable of reading its opponents’ moves before they even make them. With the advent of the Fairy type in Generation 6, Gardevoir was one of the many Pokémon to have the type added.
Gallade could just as easily have this type added, as it is reminiscent of the Prince Charming archetype common to many western myths and folklore. Gallade is the knight on a shining steed to the Fairy princess that is Gardevoir.
9 Flygon Has Fly Right In The Name
This Ground/Dragon Pokémon has possibly the most obvious choice for a third type. It should be a Flying-type. Flygon has the Levitate ability to make up for this lack, but this comes at the cost of never having another ability choice.
It can learn a handful of Flying-type moves, including Fly, and its 3d model is depicted as flapping its wings to stay aloft. Having evolved from Trapinch and Vibrava, Flygon is also a great candidate for the Bug-type, if a fourth type was on the table as well.
8 The Generation One Non-Dragons Have Earned It
The Dragon type is one of the most powerful in the game, often reserved for creatures of exceptional strength and might. In Generation 1, there was only one line of Dragon-types, leaving Pokémon like Charizard, Lapras, and Gyarados to pick up other types. But since then, the definition of a Dragon in Pokémon has expanded significantly.
If Alolan Executor and Flapiny can qualify as Dragon types, these three should absolutely be able to as well. They each have a draconic or reptilian design, drawing from different types of creatures across mythology and prehistory, and they’ve earned their title as true Dragons.
7 Beedrill, Vikavolt, Frosmoth, Shedinja, and Dustox Shouldn’t Be Flightless Insects
There exists an entire class of Pokémon who all deserve the Flying-type. These are the Bug-types, often the ones found on early routes that evolve quickly to demonstrate to the player the game’s evolution mechanic. Some of these bugs, such as Butterfree and Ninjask, get their hands on the Flying-type, but others are left with something else.
Some of these Pokémon don’t even get the Levitate ability to make up for it, despite their clear ability to fly. Giving this Pokémon access to the Flying type only feels right.
6 Kabutops Is A Sea Scorpion, Which Should Count As A Bug
One of the two fossil Pokémon in Generation 1, the Kabutops line is based on extinct lines of arthropods called sea scorpions. While Water makes sense given their aquatic nature and Rock is assigned to most fossil Pokémon, Kabutops could easily also be a Bug-type.
Its arm blades resemble those found on Scyther, a living Bug-type, and it has a hard carapace to protect itself. The Bug-type covers not only true insects, but many other types of creepy-crawlies, and Kabutops fits right into that group.
5 Noctowl Has Psychic Potential
The early route bird from Generation 2 is a mundane Normal-Flying type, but its moves and Pokedex entries hint at a deeper power that lies there. It learns a good number of Psychic moves by leveling up, and its Pokemon Pearl Pokedex entry says “If it flips its head upside down, it’s a sign that it is engaged in very complex thinking.”
These do not seem to be the behaviors of a regular bird, and the addition of a Psychic-type would be fitting for this Pokémon known sometimes as “the emperor of dark nights.”
4 Garchomp Is Based On A Fighter Jet But Isn’t A Flying Type
Another Ground/Dragon that somehow doesn’t have the Flying-type, despite clearly being able to fly, is Garchomp. Nearly every single Pokedex entry on Garchomp talks about how it can fly at the speed of a jet. Its design echoes the shark-face designs painted on the noses of airplanes during World War II, so it seems like it should definitely have the Flying-type.
This addition would make it even more vulnerable to Ice-type attacks, but that’s a price Garchomp will need to pay to truly take to the skies.
3 Drapion Somehow Stops Being A Bug
Drapion is an interesting case because it begins its life as the Poison/Bug-type Skorupi, but trades its Bug typing for the Dark-type. Despite losing this type, Drapion is still very much a creepy-crawly, likely being based on a scorpion or vinegaroon.
Being a Poison/Dark-type does set Drapion apart from the swarm of other Poison/Bug types, but it does seem to be an odd lack. Adding the Bug-type back on would just be making up for what it somehow lost.
2 Incineroar Could Be A Fighting Type, Unfortunately
The Fire/Fighting starter Pokémon is a hot-button issue in the Pokémon community. In generations 3, 4, and 5, the Fire-type starter Pokémon gained the Fighting-type upon evolution. Incineroar manages to buck this trend on a technicality, instead picking up the Dark-type to reflect its role as a heel archetype character from professional wrestling.
But Incineroar is still a martial artist. It could easily be a Fighting-type, joining other wrestling-themed Fighting-types like Hawlucha and Tyrogue.
1 Dhelmise Is Already Kind Of A Steel Type
This Pokémon is actually a mass of haunted seaweed wrapped around debris from a shipwreck. The central object in its body is its heavy anchor, which it uses to attack its prey. With a large metal making up so much of its design, Dhelmise could easily be given the Steel type. Instead, it has the Steelworker ability, which boosts the power of its Steel-type moves as if it were a Steel-type without taking on any of the vulnerabilities.
This protects Dhelmise from getting an even worse weakness to Fire but does mean that it loses out on all the defensive properties that come with being a Steel type.
