Regional forms debuted in Generation VII, and they quickly became one of the most inspired and beloved gimmicks in Pokémon. These new forms are a perfect way to keep things fresh, even twenty-one years into the franchise, and the proof that the beloved series still has plenty of ideas under its sleeve.

Fans love to experience this new side to some of their favorite Pokémon, and they keep asking for more. Indeed, regional forms are arguably more popular than Mega Evolutions or Gigantamax forms. Because of this, fans want the franchise to keep focusing on them, and there are plenty of worthy and beloved ‘mons that would benefit from a regional form of their own.

10 Donphan (Grass/Fairy)

Donphan is one of Johto’s unsung heroes. This massive Pokémon first won fan’s hearts as the adorable Phanpy before evolving. Like the rest of Ash’s Pokémon, the Trainer left him under Professor Oak’s care before he departed for Hoenn.

This Pokémon is very clearly an elephant but also takes inspiration from other elements, like tire treads. As such, its Ground typing makes sense. However, elephants commonly appear in the media as gentle giants, and they are some of nature’s most famous herbivores. Donphan’s regional form could be a dual Grass/Fairy-type, giving a new twist to this giant.

9 Onix (Dark/Rock)

Onix is one of Generation I’s most iconic Pokémon. This giant snake stone is instantly recognizable and a staple of nearly every game in the franchise. Onix is also infamously weak, with HP, Attack, Special Attack, and Special Defense below 50, even if it does have a massive 160 Defense. It got an evolution in Gen II, Steelix, but Onix remains problematic to this day.

A regional form could invert Onix’s current stats, making it an offensive beast prone to violence, ideal for the Dark-type. To keep its essence, it could retain the Rock typing, becoming a true stone goliath.

8 Krookodile (Water/Rock)

And speaking of Dark-types, Krookodile is one of Unova’s most memorable Pokémon. A fan-favorite and staple of nearly every team in Black & White, Krookodile’s mix of Dark and Ground, along with its excellent Physical Attack and above-average Speed and HP, make it an ideal companion for Unova.

Still, a makeover never hurt anyone. Obviously, Krookodile takes inspiration from crocodiles, so its regional variant could be a Water-type. Rock could work as a secondary type, making this new Krookodile as intriguing as the original.

7 Togepi (Dark)

The fight over who gets to keep the Togepi egg is one of Pokémon’s most significant arguments. As soon as the baby Pokémon hatched, it became an instant star. Endearing, cute, and charming, Togepi won over the hearts of millions, who never expected it to be a powerful Pokémon. However, Generation IV introduced Togekiss, vastly improving this line.

Togepi seems to take inspiration from the dokkaebi, a mythical Korean goblin that brings both good and bad luck. A regional form could then turn Togepi into a mischievous Dark-type that enjoys playing mean-spirited pranks on others.

6 Floatzel (Ghost/Dark)

Floatzel is one of Sinnoh’s unsung heroes. Buizel is one of the region’s most accessible Pokémon, and many Trainers use it in their teams. However, it doesn’t receive half the attention that some other Sinnoh Pokémon like Staraptor, Garchomp, or Lucario attract.

That could all change with a well-deserved regional form. Floatzel is a literal translation of its inspiration, life rafts, so it might take some time to find new and appropriate types. However, Floatzel also takes inspiration from weasels, which several cultures consider evil and bringers of bad luck, so Ghost/Dark might be an appropriate new combo. Perhaps fans will finally some love for this underrated ‘mon in the upcoming Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl.

5 Tauros (Fighting/Ground)

Some fans might not know that Ash has 30 Tauros in his possession. He caught them in a now-banned episode, and they currently reside with Professor Oak. Ash only used one of them in his team, but his Tauros quickly gained a reputation as one of his strongest Pokémon.

Since Generation I, Tauros faded into the background, which is very unfair. A regional form could bring this Pokémon back to the spotlight, where it belongs. It could perhaps go on a more mythological route and become a minotaur-like creature, making Fighting/Ground an ideal combination.

4 Staraptor (Flying/Steel)

Without a doubt, Staraptor is one of Sinnoh’s greatest stars. It’s arguably the best regional bird and one of the best Flying-types in the franchise. Staraptor’s overwhelming popularity makes it all the more bizarre that it still lacks either a regional form or Mega Evolution.

That could soon change, especially if Game Freak focuses on regional forms with Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl. Staraptor takes inspiration from hawks and falcons, so a Flying/Steel combo could take this already brilliant Pokémon to the next level.

3 Noivern (Poison/Dragon)

When it comes to Ash, a few of his Pokémon stand out as the very best. In Kalos, Noivern is a close second, only bested by the absurdly popular Greninja. Still, Noivern went through an exciting and challenging journey, eventually earning its place as one of Ash’s strongest Pokémon, thanks to its loyalty and resilience.

Noivern would be ideal for the still non-existent but necessary Sound type. However, a regional form could also showcase some darker qualities and turn Noivern into a Poison/Dragon-type. Rock/Dragon could also be an intriguing combination, and it would fit Noivern’s concept like a glove.

2 Eevee (Dragon)

When it comes to Pokémon evolution, no one beats Eevee. This cute and fluffy fox is one of the franchise’s mascots, thanks to its unique gimmick of evolving into eight different Pokémon. Even so, Eevee hasn’t received a new evolution since Generation VI, making fans anxious.

Generation IX could introduce a new eevolution that could only exist in the new region. To evolve into this new Pokémon, Eevee would need to be hatched and trained in the region, making for an intriguing and fresh twist to the classic gimmick. A popular fan theory claims that Eevee can only evolve into the types that used to be considered Special before the Physical/Special split in Gen IV, so that would mean Eevee’s still missing a Dragon-type evolution.

1 Dragonite (Dragon/Steel)

One of the most iconic Generation I Pokémon, Dragonite, has been suspiciously missing from the franchise’s gimmicks. It lacks a regional form, Mega Evolution, or Gigantamax form. Still, the gentle dragon remains one of the most beloved ‘mons, especially now that Ash has one in his team.

Dragonite’s inspirations are classic dragons from fairytales, while its name comes from the words “dragon” and “knight.” As such, a dual Dragon/Steel-type would be ideal for this goofball, and its design could change to enhance the knight elements, turning it into a literal Pokémon knight.
