There is no doubting that Ash Ketchum is one of the premier trainers in the series, even if he falls well short of his goal of catching them all. He’s normally able to overcome many of the best trainers in each season of his show, becoming well known through every region of the world in the process.

His bond with his Pokémon is unmatched as well. However, that doesn’t make him infallible nor immune to losses. There are more than a few trainers that could defeat him in battle.

10 Professor Oak Has Wisdom On His Side

Professor Oak doesn’t look like much when you first look at him, resembling more of a goofy old uncle or grandpa than anything else. He also doesn’t get to show off his talents much, particularly in the television show. However, the manga Pokémon Adventures allowed us a glimpse into how good he was in his heyday, proving himself a rival to one of the Elite Four and becoming a Pokémon League Champion. He also has age on his size, giving him greater wisdom than even Ash would have.

9 Iris Has A Ton Of Formidable Dragon-type Pokémon

Only one word needs to be said when explaining why Iris is such a dangerous trainer to go up against, dragon-type. Throughout every median of Pokémon, dragon-types have always been put on a higher pedestal than others. They are not only the strongest Pokémon types but one of the most reliable as well. It’s why she’s such a great hurdle in Pokémon White, being both the gym master and champion of the Unova Region.

8 Steven Would Ride Metagross To Victory

In the anime, Steven is more of an ally to Ash, always helping out when he can. That doesn’t change that he’s a trainer, that if the two had been more competitive with one another, would have claimed a victory.

A big reason why is his partner Metagross, who leads a team filled with steel-type Pokémon. Metagross’s mega evolution made him quite dangerous in the show, and Steven showed great skill in being to manage his team of Pokémon.

7 Diantha Would Overwhelm Ash With Her Fairy-types

Ash did manage to pick up a victory against Diantha in the anime, a hard-fought battle where his Greyninja managed to come out on top of her Mega-Gardevoir. It’s one of the better fights in that season of the show, showing off just how talented each of them was. That said, the battle was interrupted by Team Rocket and was strictly a one-on-one fight between two Pokémon rather than showing off the full roster each of them had. Had it been a more proper duel, Diantha would have pulled off a tough victory.

6 Cynthia Possesses Two Of The Strongest Pokémon In The Series

Both Garchomp and Lucario are some of the stronger Pokémon introduced into the newer sets of games. They both also happened to be under Cynthia’s care, making her one of the most dangerous trainers in the whole series. It’s been established over multiple seasons of the anime since she’s not a one-and-done character at all. She always hovers near the background, but when she shows up, it’s always an impressive sight.

5 Blue Who Out-Strategizes Ash In A Battle

If this were going strictly off the anime where the character is called Gary, he wouldn’t be anywhere near the list. Gary had a little bit of shine, but he only served as the first big antagonist for Ash.

The manga version of the character, Blue, is on a whole different level, even managing to surpass Red (who Ash is based on) as the main character at points. His knowledge and talents are unrivaled, making him one of the best trainers in the series.

4 N Has A Well Rounded Team

As the anti-villain of the Pokémon White & Black universe, it stands to reason that N is pretty strong. He’s one of the better villains in the whole series as well, fighting for the rights of Pokémon rather than just trying to take over the world. He’s more than a man with a worthy ideal as he has his fair share of powerful Pokémon. Reshiram/Zekrom is extremely powerful, and his team is incredibly diverse, letting him be prepared for any strategy thrown his way.

3 Harrison Has Beaten Ash Before And Would Do It Again

Rarely can this be said as Ash often always overcomes the odds in the anime, but Harrison beat him in the Johto League Silver Conference matches. It was a well-fought battle and one that helped push Ash forward as a trainer, showing he wasn’t infallible. Perhaps more surprisingly, Ash has never gotten his win back against the trainer, leaving him as one of the few who owns a winning record against Ash. If they ever dueled again, it’s doubtful the result would change.

2 Gold (Ethan) Would Always Be Two Steps Ahead Of Ash

Just as with Harrison, Gold or Ethan owns a victory over Red, the manga and game counterpart to Ash. It isn’t just one instance either. Gold manages to one-up Red on multiple occasions, both in the games and Pokémon Adventures. For as great a trainer as Ash is, Gold is the one hurdle he’s never been able to overcome, and given his track record, it’s one he never will. He’s got the intelligence and mentality that would rival a person like Shikamaru from Naruto.

1 Green

Unlike most of the others, Green isn’t one who could defeat Ash with skill in combat or even her Pokémon. No, her strength would be her words and the fact Ash is as gullible as anyone. She’s shown in Pokemon Adventures that she could talk Red into buying useless items for his Pikachu. It wouldn’t be surprising to see her beat Ash with underhanded means that would make Team Rocket jealous. Before Ash could realize what she was doing, she’d be victorious.
