Pokémon come in an impressive array of different shapes and sizes, but some types of pocket monsters are given more variation than others. While many Pokémon have only one form, and several have two, some are given three, four, or many more. Some of these form differences are strictly visual, but some of them affect a Pokémon’s stats. Some forms are randomly generated, while others are decided with purpose or intent.

Regardless of how each Pokémon’s form differences function, trainers looking to truly “catch ’em all” have a much taller task at hand than they may have initially realized.

10 Unown

Unown was introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver, and it was the first Pokémon to have multiple forms. Unown was released with 26 forms, and each form is modeled after one of the 26 letters in the modern English alphabet. Two more forms, representing the exclamation mark and question mark, were added in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. All of the different forms of Unown are identical in combat with the same available move set and base stats. The two punctuation forms of Unown do differ slightly, but only in their performance stats for use in the Pokéathalon.

9 Arceus

Arceus is the god of all Pokémon and the titular character of the upcoming Pokémon spinoff game. The legendary monster has the ability to change between 18 different forms. Each of these forms corresponds with one of Pokémon’s 18 different monster types. Arceus is a Normal-type Pokémon by default, but its type and form change based on which Plate or Z-Crystal the creature is holding. An Arceus not holding a Plate or Z-Crystal will stay in its default form. There aren’t significant visual differences between each Arceus type, but the monster’s accents will change color depending on the type of its held item.

8 Vivillion

Vivillion may resemble a number of the franchise’s early-game bug Pokémon, but it’s the only one that comes in a wide variety of different forms. Vivillion’s type differences don’t depend on anything happening in-game. Instead, the color and designs on Vivillion’s wings are dependent on the geographical region that the Scatterbug or egg was first created. There are 18 patterns based on various biomes such as High Plains, Savannah, and Icy Snow, plus two additional patterns (“Pokéball” and “Fancy”) that were exclusive to timed events. These forms are only visual and do not affect Vivillinn’s stats or move pool.

7 Furfrou

Furfrou’s design was inspired by poodles, and this Pokémon’s different forms reflect the dog breed’s connection to creative grooming. In addition to its default look, Furfrou has nine forms that are all created by bringing the Pokémon to a groomer.

Different forms include the Dandy Trim (which shapes Furfrou’s fur into a top hat), the Pharao Trim (which shapes the fur like a traditional Egyptian headpiece), the Debutante Trim (which shapes the fur into a large Sun hat), and more. These forms do not affect combat, stats, or typing.

6 Zygarde

Zygarde is a legendary Pokémon that appears weak on paper, but its unique form mechanic makes it a formidable Pokémon in battle. Depending on the interpretation of “form,” Zygarde has either three or five forms that it changes between. In Pokémon lore, Zygarde is formed when individual cells gather into a Zygarde Core. These cores gather into Zygarde 10% Form, which appears in the shape of a dog. This form can then change into the serpentine Zygarge 50% Form, which can change into the bipedal Zygarde Complete Form. In-game, any given Zygarde will change only between either the 10% or 50% form and the Complete Form. This change happens when either lower form drops below 50% health.

5 Silvally

Silvally bears a slight visual resemblance to Arceus, though its mixture of claws, fins, fur, and even bolts make it one of the stranger-looking monsters in the Pokémon franchise. Like Arceus, Silvalle can also change between 18 different forms. Silvalley was created by the Aether Foundation in the Alola region using the cells of multiple different types of Pokémon.

This mixed origin is reflected in Silvally’s forms, which represent each of the elemental types in Pokémon. Silvally changes forms and types based on the Memory that it’s holding. Each form changes Silvally’s head feathers and tail fin to a relevant color.

4 Minior

Minior is a Rock-type and Flying-type Pokémon that resembles a rocky sun. Minior only has two basic forms that it can change between in conjunction with its ability, Shields Down. Minior has high defense and special defense stats in Meteor Form, but its stats shift to attack, special attack, and speed in Core Form. Minior enters battle in Core Form, but the Pokémon will transition if its hit points drop below 50%. What makes Minior rank among the Pokémon with the most forms is that its Meteor form comes in seven different varieties, each one a different color.

3 Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist

Gourgeist has one of the most disturbing Pokédex entries in the Pokémon franchise, and its different forms make it an interesting monster to bring into battle. Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist can be found in Small, Medium, Large, or Super Size forms. The larger forms are rarer to find in the wild. While each size has a different stat spread, the total remains the same. For Pumpkaboo, each size up from Small to Super Size increases the Pokémon’s HP and lowers its speed. Gourgeist sees a similar change in stats, though both HP and attack raise with each increase in size. To compensate, Gourgeist’s speed drops more dramatically the larger its form.

2 Alcremie

Alcremie’s design draws inspiration from cakes, creams, and other desserts, and its forms are suitably diverse. Alcremie’s forms are based on both the Pokémon’s creme type and its held sweet. Since there are nine types of creme and seven different sweets, Alcremie can appear in an impressive 63 different forms.

This total of 63 doesn’t include alternate Gigantamax forms, which add even more forms to the list. These different forms don’t affect battles, but each creme type has its own Pokédex entry and menu sprite.

1 Spinda

Spinda’s variations aren’t actually logged in-game as different forms, but the Pokémon’s wide array of visual differences is incredibly impressive. Spinda has so many visual forms that most players are unlikely to ever see a large portion of them. Each Spinda has four colored dots on its body, and the location of these dots is determined by its 32-bit personality number. This system gives each dot around 250 possible locations, putting the total number of possible Spinda appearances just under 4 million. A number of different combinations may look similar due to overlap, but even so, the number of possibilities is staggering.
