It’s extremely rare that a series is able to connect on the universal level that Pokémon has experienced. Pokémon has seen early success as a video game series, but it’s been able to extend this success to insert the quirky franchise into all other sorts of media like anime, live-action movies, a trading card game, and so much more. Pokémon understands that it’s important to slowly change with the times, but the foundation of the series remains the same.

One of the biggest differences over the course of the Pokémon series is that the designs for these creatures have become increasingly elaborate due to the sprawling Pokédex total. Pokémon come in all shapes and sizes. The popular adage says that two heads are better than one, but these particular Pokémon really push this principle to the extreme.

10 Vanilluxe Is A Double Dose Of Icy Goodness

There are now nearly 1000 unique Pokémon designs, which means that some of the later Pokédex entries take some especially big swings that would have seemed too wild back in Generation I. Vanilluxe is an Ice-type Pokémon that debuts in Generation V, who bears a striking resemblance to a banana split ice cream. Vanilluxe’s two coneheads are both useful in their own rights, and it’s not just some form of camouflage for the Pokémon. Admittedly, there are a number of significant two-headed Pokémon like Zweilous, Weezing, Girafarig, Slowbro, and more, but Vanilluxe’s design stands out.

Plenty of Pokémon are adorable and don’t seem like they’re built for battle, but there are others that are extremely aggressive and designed for destruction. Many Dragon-type Pokémon fit into this category, but Hydreigon is particularly dangerous. The Dragon-type Pokémon has three heads, like some kind of Dragon Cerberus, but it’s important to understand that there’s only one brain between the three of them, with the two side heads being much more perfunctory. This doesn’t make Hydreigon any less of a threat, but it also means that its middle head is the most advantageous target.

Some of the most iconic Pokémon have been around since the original games, with Dugtrio being a prime example of a simple idea that delivers on its concept. Diglett is a fairly disposable and annoying Ground-type Pokémon, but its evolved form, Dugtrio, triples the threat.

Dugtrio has three heads, but the Pokémon often appears in packs so it can seem like there’s even more to this madness. Dugtrio has received some helpful revisions over the years, like how it becomes a Ground- and Steel-type hybrid in Generation VII with the addition of its fashionable Alolan variant.

7 Alolan Exeggutors Have At Least Four Heads To Perpetuate Their Species

Exeggcutor is a fascinating Pokémon and the use of a Leaf Stone will evolve an Exeggcute into this considerably taller Pokémon, which has at least three heads at the top of its tree. What’s significant about Exeggutors is that if they’re properly cultivated, they’ll thrive and grow even more heads. Recently, an Alolan variant on Exeggutor has been introduced, which has an additional head at the end of its tail. Surprisingly, if one of the Exeggutor’s heads ever falls off then it will naturally align with a group of Exeggcutes and continue to fulfill the Pokémon’s life cycle.

6 Magneton’s Three Heads Are Bound Together Through Magnetism

There are a lot of evolved Pokémon that simply combine together several of the Pokémon’s previous form. This approach generates mixed results, but a particularly effective example of this principle is the Kanto region’s Electric-type Pokémon, Magneton. Magneton is a union of three Magnemite, which are held together by magnetism so intense that it will inflict headaches to whoever is nearby. A Magnemite can even will two more Magnemite into existence if it’s not around any others. Technically, Magneton’s evolved form Magnezone also has three heads, but it’s much easier to misconstrue its middle head as its body.

5 Dodrio Adds An Extra Head To Doduo’s Duality

There are plenty of creative Pokémon that get introduced in the first generation of games, but there’s also a certain simplicity with some of the creature’s evolutions. Doduo is a two-headed Pokémon that bears a resemblance to an ostrich, but Dodrio adds more fuel to this fire as a three-headed Flying-type Pokémon.

Dodrio is an improvement on Doduo in every regard and despite how its three heads don’t always see eye-to-eye-to-eye, they do help it defend itself in battle. Dodrio is such a classic Pokémon that it’s a bit of a surprise that a “Do-quatro” hasn’t come into play.

4 Thu-Fi-Zer Is A Three-Headed Abomination

Most Pokémon fans are familiar with the trio of Legendary Birds, Zapdos, Moltres, and Articuno, from the original Generation I games, but the hybrid creation Thu-Fi-Zer is considerably more obscure. The Pokémon Adventures manga explores the lore of the series in some fascinating ways that aren’t featured in either the games or the anime series. One of Team Rocket’s more wicked experiments in the Pokémon Adventures manga is that they fuse the three Legendary Birds together into a tri-headed monstrosity courtesy of the Badge Energy Amplifier. Thu-Fi-Zer’s existence is short-lived and the Pokémon separates after its defeat.

3 Exeggcute Is A Powerful Psychic Union With Six Heads On Its Side

Some of the earliest Pokémon in the franchise are easy to underestimate, yet they actually have fascinating Pokédex entries that demonstrate their complexity. Exeggcute is a Kanto Region Pokémon that doesn’t always get a lot of respect due to how it just looks like a half-dozen belligerent eggs. The six heads that make up Exeggcute are held together with a powerful psychic bond, which is why the Pokémon isn’t just a Grass-type. Each of Exeggcute’s six heads have their own personalities, and if one ever somehow separates from the herd, its psychic connection will bind it to another pack.

2 Combee Is Built To Defend & Can Accumulate Hundreds Of Heads

Pokémon tends to prominently feature Bug-type Pokémon as early nuisances, but there are still some important Bug Pokémon that can do some serious damage. Combee takes its inspiration from a honeycomb, and it’s a Pokémon that usually has three personable segments. However, Combee’s purpose is to help protect its evolved form, Vespiqueen, which it’s able to do by combining with more of its kind to build a protective wall. Three heads are the norm with Combee, but it can gain hundreds, if not even thousands of heads under the right circumstances. It’s a serious advantage that many other Pokémon lack.

1 Spiritomb Looks Simple, But Is The Amalgamation Of 108 Lost Souls

Some of the most disturbing Pokémon are Dark- and Ghost-type creatures. The mere presence of a Ghost Pokémon is unnerving, but Spiritomb is an especially morbid creation. At a quick glance, Spiritomb just looks like a disembodied apparition, but in reality it’s an assembly of 108 lost souls. These souls coalesce and work together to collectively function as Spiritomb. Spiritomb’s design may not readily highlight all 108 of these unique souls, but glimpses of them can be seen when the Pokémon operates. Spiritomb is not exactly the type of Pokémon that trainers want to get a close look to examine.
