When it comes to the horror genre, nothing appears to be off-limits anymore. There is a lot of gratuitous violence, gore, and monsters that are absolutely terrifying. Most of the time they are ghosts, vampires, or zombies. However, in the last several years, movies have seen a new villain emerge: alien parasites.

Although most of the films gain a laugh or two when the audiences initially went to see them in theaters, they are quite scary when one takes a closer look at their powers. Just imagine if the alien parasites in this list managed to infiltrate the planet…

10 Puppet Masters (The Puppet Masters)

In the 1994 film, The Puppet Masters, another group of parasitic aliens are seen to invade the planet and dominate the world. Known as Puppet Masters, these aliens manage to infect the entire human population and force them into doing their bidding.

To get control of the body, these slug-like parasites attach themselves to the host’s back. Here, they latch onto the nervous system, which then enables them to manipulate the host’s mind. Since they have a collective consciousness, they are said to be highly intelligent creatures. Luckily, they are easily defeated by electricity.

9 The Ripley (The Dreamcatchers)

In 2003, Lawrence Kasdan created one of cinema’s scariest-looking parasites when he adapted Stephen King’s Dreamcatcher for the screen. For those who have not read the books, the primary antagonists of the film are called the Ripley. These parasitoid aliens were immensely dangerous creatures as they’re created in the host’s stomach and make their escape by eating through the host’s organs.

The Ripley managed to spread their infection by simply coming into contact with the host. However, the infection will only lead to death if their mold is ingested. Luckily, one would be able to recognize it due to its serpent-like appearance. Still, no one would like to be confronted by it.

8 Control Bugs (Starship Troopers 2)

In the Starship Troopers franchise, the Arachnids were very hostile insectoid creatures that had managed to dominate several planets and were at war with the human race. They were also seen to be very calculating to the extent that they managed to execute several ambushes and massacres.

However, it seemed they had adapted by the sequel when the Control Bugs got involved. These Arachnids would kill the human hosts, take control of their bodies, and use their vessels to fuel the cause. In Hero of Federation, many of the soldiers don’t realize they are infected until it’s too late.

7 The Xenomorphs (Alien Franchise)

As many fans of the Alien franchise aware, the Xenomorphs are pretty deadly opponents that have been responsible for several human deaths. Their superhuman abilities, as well as their arachnid-like appearance, make it hard for its enemies to kill.

However, one of the most disturbing aspects of the species has to be how they procreate. If a xenomorph finds a host, they will implant one of their offspring into their bodies where it would lay dormant for a few hours. After reaching the next life stage, a young Xenomorph would burst from the host’s chest and instantly kill them. On several occasions, some humans have been in excruciating pain because they felt every minute of it.

6 The Blob (The Blob)

Although The Blob doesn’t have a parasite per se, the monstrous alien entity did cause some irrevocable damage to the human race. First appearing after a meteorite crashes on earth, the Blob attaches itself to the first person it finds and slowly begins to dissolve them.

As the film progresses, it turns out the Blob grows to an excessive height the more it consumes people. Even the lightest contact would mean a person would be absorbed by the creature. Due to its gelatinous nature, the only way humanity can stop it is by keeping in contained in the coldest temperatures.

5 Calvin (Life)

Introduced in 2017, “Calvin” was seen to be the antagonist of the sci-fi horror film Life. This alien organism was just as dangerous as any other parasite as it was deemed an apex predator by the crew. Like the Blob, “Calvin” was shown to be highly intelligent and would grow to an excessive height the more it consumes its prey.

It is also seen to be very hostile and violent as “Calvin” would implant himself into its prey and devour them from the inside. Furthermore, “Calvin” was believed to have wiped out all existence on Mars and wasn’t known to have any weaknesses. So if humanity came face-to-face with this entity, the odds wouldn’t be in their favor.

4 The Aliens (The Faculty)

Robert Rodriguez’s sci-fi horror film, The Faculty, delivers the when the teachers of a local high school are taken over by aliens. After their planet was on the verge of collapse, the Alien Queen decided to relocate the whole race to Earth, where they attempted to dominate the human race.

To get control of a human, the Queen’s offspring would enter through the person’s ear and burrow into their brain. Here, they can access their host’s memories. However, their assimilation wasn’t perfect as the inhibited person would also be seen to have a severe personality change and incredible regenerative abilities. Still, no one would spot the signs if they were a stranger.

3 Souls (The Host)

In 2013, The Host introduced another alien parasite when the film revealed the human race had been taken over by “Souls.” These alien entities were shown to take over the race after the species believed humanity was too dangerous and violent.

Once they managed to take over the body, the “Souls” would eventually erase the original host’s consciousness. However, the “Souls” would still be able to access the original host’s memories and use them for their own gain. The only way to recognize that a body has been inhabited by the “Souls” is by the silver rings in the host’s eyes.

2 The Klyntar Symbiote (Venom)

Although the parasite that attaches itself to Eddie Brock is an antihero, most people will agree that the symbiotes of Venom are some of the most terrifying creatures as they manage to envelop their hosts and feed on their adrenaline.

While most of the time they work with their host, there have also been instances where the parasite has suppressed the host’s mind to gain control of their body. Still, if one came across it on the street, they would be petrified since the parasite has cannibalistic urges.

1 The Thing (The Thing)

Another obvious entry has to be the alien entity in John Carpenter’s The Thing. The “Thing” was a shape-shifting extraterrestrial that managed to terrorize the human race after it learned to assimilate and imitate the species. To do this, the entity would attack its target and then attempt to make a separate copy.

However, if this isn’t possible, the Thing can also get control of its host by injuring them and give them open access to the body (which would allow assimilation to occur from within). It is one of cinema’s scariest villains as the entity manages to assimilate one’s physical appearance, their disorders, their mannerisms, and even their voice.
