Shiny Pokémon take “Gotta Catch ‘Em All” to a whole new level. While some trainers are content with catching and trading normally in order to get their hands on at least one of every species of Pokémon, others like to spend their time shiny hunting.
It is incredibly satisfying to get a special, rare-colored variant of favored Pokémon. Unfortunately, not every trainer can experience this kind of satisfaction, either because the shiny looks abysmal, or because the shiny looks exactly like the regular version does. Trainers are much less motivated to hunt for a shiny Pokémon if there is nothing particularly special about its appearance.

Fans enjoy collecting these but are far less interested in its shiny variant. Pikachu’s shiny version looks exactly like the original, except a fraction darker.
9 Gengar’s Changes Are Almost Unnoticeable
Shiny Gengar looks absolutely stunning in its Mega Evolution and in its Gigantamax forms. Its body becomes white, making it a cool and stark contrast with the non-shiny Gengar.
When it’s not in either of these forms, however, Gengar looks completely underwhelming. Trainers are required to squint in order to tell the difference between a regular Gengar and a Shiny one because they look exactly the same.
8 Garchomp Is A Lighter Color
When fans are asked which Pokémon has the most disappointing shiny variant, most of them say that Garchomp is the uncontested victor.
Despite it being one of the strongest non-legendary Pokémon in Generation IV, and a source of terror for all trainers who face Cynthia, its shiny variant only brings feelings of disappointment instead. The same colors are utilized on its body, albeit a little lighter than a normal Garchomp’s.
7 Togepi & Its Evolutions Are Only A Little Darker
Togepi and its evolutions are so cute that most people can forgive the fact that their shiny forms aren’t very exciting. The triangles on their bodies swap their red and blue colors, and the rest of their body is darker.
A trainer would need to pay attention to details in order to be able to tell the difference. In order to stand out more, the white portions of their bodies should have been made a different color instead, as the shades of white are too identical, especially for Togetic.
6 Elekid Is Still Yellow
Electabuzz has a great shiny form. The normal yellow fur is replaced with a bright red, making the differences between the two forms incredibly eye-catching. Elekid’s shiny form doesn’t stand out nearly as much, or at all.
Its body becomes a lighter shade of yellow, which makes fans wonder why its shiny form is so subdued compared to that of its evolution. For any trainer not giving the game their full attention, they are not going to notice the difference.
5 Fans Are Still Debating Whether Giovanni’s Persian Is Shiny Or Not
Giovanni likes his Persian, always keeping him by his side. Despite his attachment to the Pokémon, even he wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between an ordinary Persian and a shiny one.
The similarities are so uncanny that even fans find it impossible to agree on whether or not his Persian is shiny. At the very least, the jewel on Persian’s head should have been made a different color in order to set the shiny variant apart.
4 Manaphy Is A Legendary With An Underwhelming Shiny
The only thing more exciting than a shiny Pokémon is a shiny legendary Pokémon. Legendary Pokémon are rare, as each game has a very limited number of them. They are also exceptionally powerful allies to have on any Pokémon team.
This is why it is particularly disappointing when a legendary’s shiny form looks exactly the same as the regular form. Shiny Manaphy is as blue as ever, although a tiny bit lighter than usual.
3 Leafeon’s Body Is A Little Darker
The shiny variants of all of the Eeveelutions vary in quality. Fans tend to like the pink Vaporeon, the Umbreon with blue stripes, and the green Espeon, as they not only have very noticeable changes, but they look nice as well.
On the other end of the spectrum is Leafeon, which has an underwhelming shiny form. Instead of getting an entirely new color like many of the other forms, Leafeon’s body only grew a shade or two darker.
2 Gastrodon’s Body Is A Little Lighter
Gastrodon is yet another Pokémon without a shiny form with obvious differences, despite the fact that it comes in two different forms depending on where they are found: a pink one, and a blue one.
Both forms have their own shiny variant, but neither variant is much different from the original. They are only given a slightly lighter face, back, and horns. It would have been better if their colors were much lighter than they currently are.
1 Scraggy Is Still Yellow
Shiny Scraggy keeps its yellow body, making it difficult to discern it from a normal Scraggy. The colors on its body are darker overall, but the changes are not so huge that it makes trainers prioritize hunting for it first.
This shiny variant doesn’t bring anything new to the table, and it’s not difficult for a trainer to miss it. It’s better to evolve it as soon as possible, since parts of a shiny Scrafty turn green, a large difference from the original.
