Beverly Hills, 90210 was in the news once again after actor Jessica Alba recalled her time as a guest star on the show, claiming that she was told not to look the main cast directly in the eye. While that has been disputed, it brings to light the fact that there were actually a ton of big stars who appeared on the ’90s teen drama long before they were household names, not just Alba.

The iconic series, which aired for 10 seasons from 1990 to 2000, had an ensemble cast that included Jason Priestley, Luke Perry, Shannon Doherty, Tori Spelling, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Brian Austin Green, and Gabrielle Carteris, with many others who took on major roles as the series progressed, like Tiffani Thiessen, Vanessa Marcil, and Hilary Swank. But what about those who had small roles before they went on to become huge stars?

10 Matthew Perry

He became an icon not long after snagging a small appearance in this teen drama once he secured the role of Chandler Bing on the sitcom Friends. Could he be any luckier?

But before Perry got the role that would go on to define his career (and change his life), Perry played a young man at West Beverly High named Roger. Feeling pressure from his rich father, Roger attempted to commit suicide. Of course, the heartthrob and resident moral compass at the school Brandon Walsh came to his rescue in the nick of time.

9 James Pickens Jr.

Fans of Grey’s Anatomy know Pickens Jr. as Dr. Richard Webber on the long-running medical drama. But the actor, now in his mid-’60s, has had a pretty long and successful acting career.

Before he got this role that would introduce him to a whole new legion of young fans, he actually appeared on another defining primetime series: 90210. Who was he? He was manager Henry Thomas at the Beverly Hills Beach Club where Brandon worked for the summers throughout high school.

8 Lucy Liu

The show’s producers noticed that Liu had tremendous acting talent, though it’s a wonder she wasn’t given a leading role right then and there. But in her early years of pursuing an acting career, Liu managed to get cast in a small role on 90210. In fact, it was her first-ever acting gig in Hollywood.

In the second season, considered to be the series’ best, Liu played a waitress named Courtney who worked at the Peach Pit with Brandon. Liu, of course, went on to have a very successful acting career in both films and television, including on Ally McBeal, in the Kill Bill and Charlie’s Angels films, and Dirty Sexy Money. Her longest-running role was as Dr. Joan Watson on the series Elementary, which she played from 2012 through to 2019.

7 David Arquette

Arquette is known mostly for appearing in the Scream films starting with the first one in 1996. But he actually had a small role on 90210 before that. He played Diesel Stone, a rock star and the ex-boyfriend of Brandon’s girlfriend Nikki in an episode of the third season way back in 1992.

After Brandon and Nikki went out for a night on the town and unknowingly ended up at one of his gigs, the pair got into a fight when Nikki decided to stay and hang out with her slimy ex instead of accompanying her boyfriend to an event with his friends.

6 Seth Green

It was the blind date from hell. Kelly and Brenda were set up by Mr. and Mrs. Walsh, and after spending hours prettying themselves up, they walked down the stairs only to find two geeky guys, one of whom was played by Green.

In this episode of season three, the ladies decided to proceed with the date anyway, despite their reservations. But their initial feelings turned out to be true as the two young men were more interested in playing video games than hanging with two pretty girls.

5 Paul Johansson

Johansson played Dan Scott on One Tree Hill, who was an evil character strikingly similar to the one he played on 90210. In the ’90s series, he played John Sears, a stereotypical rowdy frat guy who was also seemingly a jerk, especially to women.

He had it out with Steve on several occasions, eventually getting ousted from his fraternity, ironically because of Steve who was known to be a jerk himself at times. His recurring character returned again to get revenge on Steve by dating his ex, Celeste.

4 Michael Cudlitz

Fans likely don’t remember that Brenda attended the West Beverly High prom with a character that none other than Abraham himself from The Walking Dead played. Cudlitz actually had a pretty big role through the first few seasons as Tony Miller, a student who desperately pined for Brenda.

She eventually relented and went to prom with him in the third season, but nothing progressed from there. She was always all about Dylan, after all. And while the character of Brenda transformed quite a bit through her run on the show, she was also written off after the fourth season.

3 Adam Levine

At the time that he appeared on the show, Levine was already with a band. However, he wasn’t yet part of the band Maroon 5 that would go on to enjoy a meteoric rise to success. Instead, his band was Kara’s Flowers, which lasted from 1994 through to 1997, until they split.

He, along with his bandmates, appeared on an episode of 90210 in 1997. The band ended up getting back together with a new guitarist taking over that role (Levine was originally serving as both lead vocalist and guitarist) and Maroon 5 was born.

2 Aaron Paul

Blink and you might have missed Paul, who has since become famous for his role as Jessie Pinkman on Breaking Bad. He has also appeared in series like The Path, Truth Be Told, and the latest season of Westworld.

But way back in 1999 when he was just 20, Paul played a West Beverly student named Chad. In the episode, he was in a scene playing Romeo in the high school’s production of Romeo and Juliet.

1 Eva Longoria

Four years after appearing in a small role in this series, Longoria would go on to have a starring role in the primetime drama Desperate Housewives, which would make her a household name. She has also become an outspoken advocate and fierce businesswoman alongside securing acting roles on both TV and in movies.

While Longoria was on the daytime soap The Young and the Restless from 1976 through to 2003, in 2000, in the final season of 90210, she had a minor role that broke her out of the soap opera genre. In it, she might be pretty easy to miss. She played a flight attendant in a single episode.
