When it comes to the lifetime of sitcoms, they either barely finish the first season without getting cancelled, or they go on for so long that they claw at anything to stay fresh. Regularly, when sitcoms begin to age, the idea of a crossover starts to get thrown back and forth in the writers’ room, and it works to varying results.

Sometimes TV crossovers can make sense, but they end up being underwhelming. However, other times crossovers can be completely unpredictable and end up being one of the highlights of the series.

10 The Office UK / The Office US

A meeting of the minds was inevitable and fans had been waiting for this ever since the US version’s very first episode, but that it doesn’t make it any less strange, as Michael Scott and David Brent bonded over Chinese stereotypes.

Brent even appeared in season eight when he applied for Michael’s job remotely. Fans will argue over whether the US or the UK version is better until the end of time, but when they crossed over fans of both were untied for those few moments.

9 The Simpsons / Family Guy

Being one of the most surprising crossovers given their creators ongoing feud, it almost seemed redundant given that one show is a direct copycat of the other. As Matt Groening himself sent the creators of South Park flowers when they spent a full episode criticising Family Guy, fans thought that any possibility of a crossover was dead.

The Simpsons has had plenty of guest stars, which is one of the things the show does better than Family Guy, but nobody would have thought that Peter Griffin himself would kick back with Homer.

8 Community / Cougar Town

Community and Cougar Town have a history long before they crossed over. Abed, the pop culture obsessed nerd who truly believes life is one big TV show (which is one of the reasons why he is an underrated character) became a huge fan of Cougar Town and he even started a Facebook fan club for the show.

Abed said himself that “If I am a person who watches Cougar Town, how can I be in Cougar Town,” which is why his background appearance in his beloved show was genius, as he just stared at the main characters not knowing what to do.

7 Caroline In The City / Friends

The short-lived (compared to Friends) sitcom Caroline In The City had a lot in common with the city slickers in Friends. As both shows are based in the bustling New York, it was only a matter of time until Caroline encountered one of the six friends.

Though he is never mentioned by name, Matthew Perry is absolutely in character as Chandler here, as he pretends to like The Piano in a video rental store to impress Caroline before being foiled and running away.

6 Everybody Loves Raymond / The King of Queens

Everybody Loves Raymond and The King of Queens have a lot of similarities, as both are about a family in the suburbs with irritating in-laws hiding around every corner, not to mention Ray Romano and Kevin James are close friends off-screen too.

However, this crossover still comes as a surprise as Kevin James played a completely different character in Raymond years before. It might be a fun crossover and is one of the show’s best episodes, but it doesn’t do much for continuity.

5 Arrested Development / Malcolm In The Middle

Being one of the most overlooked shows on TV and one of the best sitcoms of all time, one of the reasons why audiences fell in love with Arrested Development was for all of its hidden jokes.

On a tour of the Paramount lot, Michael finds Frankie Muniz in the middle of shooting a scene for Malcolm in the Middle. Muniz is even giving one of those classic direct-to-camera monologues the show was known for, and then he passively-aggressively mutters under his breath about the annoyance of those tours.

4 Brooklyn Nine-Nine / New Girl

Though both shows primarily feature buffoons with jobs they wouldn’t ordinarily get, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is much more fantastical than New Girl.

Following the classic sitcom trope of living in a penthouse loft that the hipster characters couldn’t possibly afford, New Girl follows a fairly standard sitcom formula. Whereas B99 follows satirical and delusional cops who can’t look after themselves, are way out of their element, and should never carry a gun. This is why Jess and Jake appearing in each others’ shows is one of the most surprising sitcom crossovers of the 21st century.

3 Friends / Mad About You

As Mad About You is about a group of 20-something socialites living in a huge apartment they can’t possibly afford in New York, and Friends is about a group of 20-something socialites living in a huge apartment they can’t possibly afford, they were bound to run into each other at some point.

As luck would have it, Jamie and Lisa run into Phoebe in Central Perk, confusing her with her twin sister, Ursula.

2 Archer / Bob’s Burgers

With both Archer and Bob’s Burgers having an incredibly loyal fan base and are recognised as two of the leading shows in animated TV, this crossover was a complete meeting of the minds.

The pun-rich Bob’s Burgers episode featured in Archer at the beginning of season four is one of the most exciting but bizarre intros to a season ever. In it, three Russians confuse Bob to be Archer, and after a tussle, the burger flipper murders the Russians with one of their faces left melting on the grill.

1 The Jeffersons / Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air

Neither show has aged very well, and when Will Smith and George Jefferson’s paths cross it becomes fairly hard to watch in 2020. Given that the acting on both Fresh Prince and The Jeffersons tend to be overly theatrical and physical, it’s not only exhausting to watch, but when they argue over which wife/fiancée is uglier and who is fatter, it reminds audiences of both of the shows’ shortcomings.
