One of the first Asgardian characters Marvel Comics introduced was Skurge the Executioner. He first appeared in Journey Into Mystery #103 in 1964 alongside another Asgardian villain known as The Enchantress. While Loki appeared one year earlier, this allowed Marvel to start to open up Thor to more Asgardian history and lore.

Movie fans got a chance to meet the Executioner in Thor: Ragnarok, where he went from a comedic slacker god to a villain to a tragic hero who helped Thor save the Asgardian refugees. However, in the comics, he was a villain for almost his entire time, including a part of the original Masters of Evil. With that said, he had a similar trajectory as he did in the comics, eventually becoming a hero before his death.

Skurge Was The Son Of A Storm Giant

Skurge the Executioner and Loki have something in common. They both have parentage in the land of the giants. While Loki was the son of a Frost Giant, he was adopted by Odin and brought into Asgard. Skurge was the son of a Storm Giant, but his mother was an Asgardian from Skornheim.

Skornheim is next to Asgard and is a land of danger, a place where most gods fear to travel to. Even immortals found death in Skornheim and as a result, Skurge grew into a powerful warrior, someone who could fight anyone.

The Executioner worked for Enchantress

In Thor: Ragnarok, Skurge was a lackey through-and-through, first following Loki’s orders and then becoming Hela’s right-hand man. In the comics, it was the same. When the Executioner first appeared, he was nothing more than muscle for the more powerful Enchantress.

This was a tragic fall for Skurge, as he was one of Asgard’s greatest warriors, and helped win a war against the Storm Giants. However, he fell in love with Enchantress and became her loyal servant, promising to follow her every order with the hope one day she would love him back.

Executioner Joined The Masters Of Evil

The Executioner, while an Asgardian, traveled to Earth and after a few unsuccessful attempts to beat Thor, joined the villain team known as the Masters of Evil. This group, ran by Captain America’s long-time enemy Baron Zemo, went on to become a genuine threat to the Avengers.

It was Enchantress who convinced Skurge to join Zemo’s team, as she thought they could beat Thor if they had enough help. It was the Masters of Evil who delivered one of the Avengers’ greatest defeats in the “Under Siege” storyline.

Executioner Helped Free Valkyrie

Enchantress and Skurge kept trying to kill Thor and caused so many problems for Asgard that Odin finally grew tired of their games. When they arrived in this time, the Executioner left Enchantress for another woman and she vowed to destroy all men. She took the original Valkyrie, whom she had entrapped years ago, and used her as a weapon.

The Defenders ended up transported to this time and it was a friend of the team named Barbara Norriss who Enchantress turned into Valkyrie. In the end, Skurge returned to Enchantress and the Defenders returned to Earth with Valkyrie, now in the body of Norriss.

His Big Thor: Ragnarok Moment Is From The Comics

The biggest moment in Thor: Ragnarok for Skurge the Executioner came when he turned on Hela and joined Thor and his allies in battling her undead warriors. Thor, Heimdall, and Valkyrie were trying to save the surviving Asgardians while Loki rose Surtur to destroy their home.

This played out in the comics as well. In Thor #362, Balder the Brave and Thor needed to lead their people to safety. Skurge asked to remain behind and protect the bridge. With guns blazing and an ax for backup, Skurge stood tall to the end, and not one warrior from Hel crossed the bridge.

Enchantress Created A Second Executioner After Skurge Died

Even after Skurge had his hero moment and died a hero’s death, he ended up in Hel. Despite this, he still longed to be with Enchantress forever. This opportunity opened up when Amara’s sister Lorelei died and Skurge offered her the chance to join him in Hel for eternity to save her, but Amara refused.

Instead, The Enchantress just created a new Executioner on Earth. She gave the ax to a human named Brute Benhurst, and he took over the role. Thor realized this wasn’t Skurge because the new Executioner lacked honor.

Skurge Joined Forces With Thor’s Brother In Hel

While in Hel, Skurge found that he was not anywhere near finished in his violent wars and battles. He ended up working with Thor’s brothers, Balder and Tyr, when Odin’s firstborn Angela overthrew Hela for control of Hel.

It was an interesting twist on Thor: Ragnarok, but in this case, the firstborn was not Hela but a warrior who conquered Hela. Angela never wanted to rule Hel, and just did this to free her lover’s spirit and then left. After this, Balder took over as Hel’s ruler and Skurge served him.

Kid Loki Freed Skurge From Hel Using Trickery

Skurge spent a long time in Hel, but that all changed when Malekith began his attacks in the War of the Realms. Malekith gave the realm of Niffleheim to Sindr the Queen of Cinders and Skurge helped Balder, Loki, and Thor battle her.

When Kid Loki wanted to get the Naglfar Beacon to help in the War of the Realms, he decided he needed help. Kid Loki used his powers of illusion to appear to Skurge as Enchantress and he promised to free the Executioner from Hel if he would join his battle. Skurge agreed but was disappointed that it was not Enchantress in the end.

The Asgardians Of The Galaxy

The reason that Kid Loki freed Skurge was because he was gathering a team of Asgardians to help in the War of the Realms. While the Asgardians of the Galaxy name was a little joke in Avengers: Endgame with Thor joining the team, it was an actual cosmic team in the comics.

On top of Skurge, Kid Loki also brought in Kevin Masterson, the son of the original Thunderstrike, Throg, and Valkyrie and her human host Annabelle Riggs. Eventually, Odin’s daughter Angela joined up and the team was a mighty force.

Skurge The Executioner Finally Found Redemption

Skurge died once, and even though he helped save countless people in a self-sacrifice, he still ended up in Hel, paying for his past sins. However, as a member of the Asgardians of the Galaxy, Skurge finally found redemption.

This happened during a battle with the Angels of Heven, and he fought alongside Angela in this battle. Skurge used his Bloodaxe to hold the portal to Heven opened and this allowed Angela to draw the bloodthirsty angels back to Heven, but not before Skurge died in the battle. What happened next was a special moment for the warrior, as he didn’t return to Hel and instead gained entry to Valhalla.
